Qsymia Reviews [2019]

Qsymia is a brand-name weight loss pill that contains two active ingredients: phentermine hydrochloride and topiramate extended-release. While the phentermine acts as a central nervous system stimulant to suppress appetite and boost energy, topiramate helps control cravings and makes food less appealing.

Qsymia capsules are available in four progressive doses:

  • 3.75/23: 3.75 mg phentermine HCL + 23 mg topiramate-ER
  • 7.5/46: 7.5 mg phentermine HCL + 46 mg topiramate-ER
  • 11.25/69: 11.25 mg phentermine HCL + 69 mg topiramate-ER
  • 15/92: 15 mg phentermine HCL + 92 mg topiramate-ER

The capsules are all oblong and imprinted with VIVUS on the left, plus the specific dose on the right. Color varies by dose ( 1 ). This is what Qsymia capsules look like:

Qsymia is only available in the United States, and only with a valid doctor’s prescription.

As of 2017, over two million Qsymia prescriptions had been filled ( 2 ). However, due to the high cost of this medication, many patients (and doctors) prefer to use generic phentermine plus genetic topiramate in doses equal to those contained in Qsymia. Taking two separate pills saves money and produces similar clinical outcomes.

Pros
  • Qsymia combines the effects of phentermine HCl and topiramate-ER to make weight loss easier.
  • This medication comes in four progressive doses, allowing doctors and patients to customize treatment to each individual’s needs.
  • Qsymia can be used for long-term obesity management, unlike phentermine which should only be take for three months at a time.
Cons
  • Qsymia is significantly more expensive than phentermine-only pills, costing about $200 per month without insurance.
  • The combined pill has a long list of potential side effects, including severe birth defects if taken while pregnant.
  • This is a newer medication (FDA approval in 2012), so long-term side effects remain relatively unknown.
Summary
Qsymia is a combined pill that contains both phentermine hydrochloride and topiramate extended-release. It is popular because the two medications work together to produce impressive weight loss results, and Qsymia can be taken for longer than can phentermine alone. However, this brand name pill is much more expensive than generic phentermine and carries the risk of severe side effects.
