190 pounds

"Hi, I'm a 21-year-old mother of 1. My son was born on mother's day in May 06. I gained over 100 pounds with him; I guess you can say the phrase 'eating for two' took over my life. I have always been that "fat" friend that all of you have had, I could never borrow anyone's clothes, or wear the swim suits they could. In high school I walked around completely lost. I felt like my style changed every week, my thought is that I didn't know how to fit in with out looking like a hippo in a bikini. At 15, my mother put me on depo birth control and within 4 months, I gained over 55 pounds! So I just wore super baggy clothes. Fresh out of high school, I moved 6 hours away from my family and friends to open up my own tattoo shop. Needless to say, at 17, opening up a business was a bit overwhelming, so I then lost all the weight that I was holding on to in high school. I think a lot of it also had to do with getting away from my terribly abusive and controlling alcoholic mother. So then my tattoo shop was doing really well and I decided to open a second one in Appleton WI. But then I was closer to a big city and partying and a lot of bad things came my way. I started drinking and doing drugs and just not taking care of myself. I went from 125 to 189 in about 3 months. I used to wake up every morning and just stand in my closet and cry... my fiancé at the time would just laugh at me and tell me, "see look what you have done to yourself". I am not longer with him and I have had to take some time to get his words out of my head. My whole life I was told that I would never have children and that completely destroyed my reason to look like a lady, cause I didn't feel like one. Well in January 05 I decided to sell my shop and move home. When I got here, I was homeless for a while and then I moved in with my brother, lost close to 60 pounds and then moved in with a friend of mine......returned to partying and ended up getting pregnant. I guess losing weight probably had something to do with it. About 3 weeks before I found out I was pregnant I met my now fiancé. He was warm and welcoming and a fresh face, just what I needed. Well we started dating and his mom could see that the house that I was living in was not safe for a young girl like me so she moved me in to their home, and on that day I took a test just cause something didn't feel right and well BAM I was pregnant. He was a virgin so I knew it was not his. So I was not sure what I was going to do, but they all were ok with it including my bf. Almost 2 years later, we are engaged and going to be married on September 2007."

A new lifestyle
What is the deciding factor that made you decide to change your lifestyle?
He has seen me thin and now he sees me heavy. It's hard because my son is not his...he'll argue till he's blue in the face over that. But in my eyes it's not his fault that my body looks like it does, so that's been hard, but he loves me and he shows no signs of being embarrassed of me. But I am embarrassed of me. And that is why I had to change. After all that has gone so up and down in my life, I am now stable enough and mature enough to see what I need to do for me. And losing weight and getting an education is it. Since starting phen in November 2006, I have gone from 220 to 190. From a dress size 20 to a 12-14. This is a huge deal to me. I have changed my diet only allowing myself 1300 calories a day, and am drinking enough water to have a small school of fish reside in my stomach. I no longer drink soda , diet or regular, both are awful for you. I have also switched to skim milk, and wheat bread. I had to step back and look at what I was eating. For example, I was eating "lite" yogurt...but looking at the calories there were still 100 - 120 calories in one yogurt. But I did a little searching and there was a brand that, depending on what you wanted in it, was between 40 - 80 calories for a yogurt... also I love this frozen meal called skillet meals - I love the chicken Alfredo one. And the brand I was buying and eating was 420 calories for 1 serving, where the kind that didn't have such an attractive package was only 120 per serving. And the taste in both of these examples was no different for the less calorie kind. I have taken up mall walking. Me and my family walk the mall for 2 or 3 hours 3-5 times a week. And have started going to the gym. 2 hours of swimming laps burns 1111 calories! How great is that? You can play water games and make it fun. I recently started taking CLA and 5-HTP and I swear they are amazing the cla have reduced my "pouch" noticeably, and the 5-htp helps me with my mood swings from the phen, and just from being a natural hot head... also the 5-htp helps with my appetite. I also take a multivitamin and sometimes, green tea too; I found that the green tea kind of makes me sick to my stomach and a little too weird. But the green tea drinks "diet citrus" flavour is great and gives ya a little pep in your step.
What was the most difficult adjustment to your new lifestyle?
The hardest part of my new life is having big eaters all around me and everyone in my life loves fast food and super fattening food. So being able to order smart has been a task but well worth it.
What is the most rewarding part of your new lifestyle?
The most rewarding part of my journey is being able to go in to a store and not get one of those "none of our things will fit you" looks and being able to go to Victoria secrets and buy a medium size. And my wedding dress going from a 20 to a size 12-14 is probably the best thing a bride could hope for.
Do you have any words of advice for the community?
The advise I would give to all of you is read what others write, but follow your heart. Don't panic and give up so easily...none of us know all the answers, or we would be god. WATER WATER WATER Drink a large glass before your meal and a large one after - this way you fill up on water and eat less. Don't look for everything everyday to motivate you. Find small things so that you are excited about it for a longer amount of time. Thank you all for reading and best wishes on all your journeys.
