"In September 2002 when I got married, I weighed about 165. I was overweight, but comfortable with myself then. Not happy, but comfortable.
By the time I got back from the honeymoon I weighed at least 170.
I was in a new marriage, I had a crappy job where I sat on my butt all day, and I had given up on working out while planning the wedding. I quickly put on another 20 pounds in the next year and a half thanks to lots of dinners out at restaurants, lots of Pepsi during the day at work, and no exercise whatsoever. My wonderful hubby never complained about me gaining weight. He says he just never noticed my size."

A new lifestyle
What is the deciding factor that made you decide to change your lifestyle?
My deciding factor? A bridesmaid dress. At Christmas in December 2004, my brother and his then-fiancé told us that they were planning an October wedding and I was to be a bridesmaid. And then I saw the dress. I went into a state of shock right there at my mom's kitchen table. It was short, it was strapless, and it was clingy. WTH were they thinking making me wear something like that? I knew that there was no way I could stand up in front of the church with my back to 200 people. I didn't want them staring at my fat through the dress. I knew that my weight had gotten out of control and that I had to fix it NOW.
What was the most difficult adjustment to your new lifestyle?
I don't know that I'd say any one thing was the most difficult. It was all difficult. I gave up a lot of things that I loved at the time. I had to devote more time to going to the gym and working out, so that left less time for my family. And I learned who my real friends were. There were several "friends" who became catty and jealous of my determination to become a better person. Needless to say I have not continued those friendships.
What is the most rewarding part of your new lifestyle?
Being able to walk into any store in the mall, pick up a medium top, a size 8 pair of pants, and not walking out in tears. I used to get so mad in the dressing room because nothing fit me. Now everything does!
Do you have any words of advice for the community?
"Be miserable. Or motivate yourself. Whatever has to be done, it's always your choice." --Wayne Dyer I've lived by that saying for the last two years. It's true. I spent too long being miserable. Now it's my time to love the body I'm in.
