grabbing you foot and bringing it up from behind actually stretches your ham quadriceps, the muscles on the front of your thigh.

lovemyboys posted a good video above of exercises for shin splints!

OOOOHHHHH!!! How do you stretch the muscles that shin splints affect? The only way I can figure out is to grab my foot from behind and bring it up to my butt. Do you know of other ways????

Congrats on getting the scale to move!!!!

I feel your pain on the shin splints (literally LOL) I also have plantar fascitis, and for me, I got a pair of orthotics and new shoes, and started spending a lot more time stretching... that helped a lot!!! Also, I warm up with a nice casual walk for several minutes and gradually increase my speed. After about 10 minutes, I stretch again and that seems to help too. Sorry about your experience at the shoe store Brooks are great shoes...

Ooh, I got pissed! I went to "Finish Line" and asked the guy if they had a "shoe fitter person" and explained to him that I was looking for someone to tell me what shoes are good for high arches and shin splints. He said they did have someone and for me to hang on. He came back a few minutes later and pointed out a pair of Aisics (sp) and said his manager told him they were the best for my issues. They must have been the latest style b'c they cost $129... ALL the others were $69 or lower. He got my size and I tried it on. I felt no support, so I look inside the other shoe and the insole was FLAT. Completely flat... I've never seen a pair of running shoes that were flat inside. I look up and this dude is bringing me a pack of "arch support insoles" off the shelf! I said "I don't think so buddy, I can get those at Wal-mart and put them in my old shoes, that's not what I need. Tell your manager I don't appreciate him trying to sell me the most expensive pair of shoes in the store to cover his incompetence at not knowing his own merchandise!" I chunked his shoe at him and walked out.

I ended up Hibbet where I didn't even tell the guy what I wanted. He asked to see my foot, said I had a really high arch and started suggesting shoes for me to try. ALL of them had arch support. I ended up buying a pair of Brooks b'c I had the store manager AND some dude in there with his gf shopping tell me they had a pair and that they were great for plantar fiacsa(sp) with is the foot condition I have b'c of my high arches. Those dudes hooked me up! I wore them this morning and so far, no foot pain, no unbearabel shin pain... although they're still a little sore from before.

Thank you guys so much for your advice!! I'm so glad I know how important a good shoe is now!!

D*mn girls!! You guys are an absolute wealth of knowledge and infomative links!! LOL. Thanks, I've been surfing around the NB website and checked on about.com for what kind of foot I have. Turns out I have a high arch and I'm an under pronator. The site said that either over or under pronators will get shin splints or plantar fascitis (sp) if they don't have the right shoe. I have both of those issues. I guess I just never thought what shoe I bought mattered as long as it was pretty. Ooops. I'm going to see if my mom wants to make a trip to memphis with me, they have a NB store there with a 'fit expert'.

I had shin splits and I did noticed I get them less frequently now that I wear NB cross trainers. I am not saying for sure that's what did it but now with thin4good posting it could be. I got them from Modell's something like $40. Congrats on the loss!!!

Haha... yeah I learned the 'no hills yet' thing the hard way! About the shoes though... is there a "shin splint" shoe? Or just certain kinds of NB that will help absorb the shock? I hate doctors and it seems like we're always broke these days, so I'm just trying to cut corners.

    Hey Country!

Congrats on getting the scale to move! Awesome! As for the shin splints, you might want to see a podiatrist. I have a friend with really bad shin splints and when she went to the doctor he gave her a prescription for new balance sneakers. I have another friend who was also given a prescription for new balance sneakers but for heel spurs.

The thing is new balance makes a lot of different sneakers for various pain so you need to know the exact shoe that will be best for you (hence seeing a podiatrist). A podiatrist can also examine your walk to help you come up with the right shoe.

A couple of things that will help with the shin splints are: if you can run on dirt instead of concrete it's MUCH better for your legs. When you have the pain make sure to rest, ice, heat and if you can get a massage to your lower legs that helps too.

Also, if you're just starting to get back into jogging, do it on flat surfaces vs. hills. I hope this helps!

Talking Me and my scale... & shin splints??

So, you guys read in one of my other posts that my scale has been sitting around 183-184 lbs for almost three weeks after I had lost down to 180 lbs, right? WELL, I jumped on the scale yesterday morning and it says 179 lbs... I'm like, huh? So I check it out, scale seems to be working fine, but I still thought... fluke. I get on this morning for my weekly weigh in and it's dead in the middle of 178-179 lbs.!! I thought maybe it was b'c I was off of phen for almost three weeks, and then started back this week, but I've only taken it the last two days. I have worked my *** off in the gym these last couple weeks and finally got my diet back on track last week, so I prefer to believe it dropped off from hard work instead of a fluke. Naturally I'm exstatic.

I was a little bummed this week though, I told you guys I've started trying to jog for as long as I can so I can train my body to run. I can barely make it 1/4 mile right now. This last weekend I went to the Ozark Mnts. with my folks and thought it would be a good idea for my fat *ss to get out and walk/jog on those steep hills. I did a mile and jogged a little bit, but I got my shin splints very angry with me and I couldn't do anything high impact this whole week b'c I could barely walk. I had to sit on the very uncomfortable stationary bike instead of my favorite treadmil. I was in some pain, let me tell ya! Anywho... they haven't bothered me since I went to boot camp for the prison and we had to run in steel toe boots. Anyone else ever had issues with shin splints? What do you do for them? Can I still train and stuff somehow without aggravating them? I have braces specially designed for them, but they're uncomfortable, hot, and bulky. I don't want to wear them! Anybody got something better?
    I love you guys!!!
