This is why I encourage people to shop at Goodwill... and yes Dbeth.. you are right you can get some items cheaper, brand new at other locations. I have had to explain this to people before... but the revenue we generate is going for an awesome cause. YOUR $$$ is helping someone! And we truly appreciate it.

Goodwill Industries (Goodwill) is one of the world’s largest nonprofit providers of education, training, and career services for people with disadvantages, such as welfare dependency, homelessness, and lack of education or work experience, as well as those with physical, mental and emotional disabilities.

Me personally, at my location have gotten 4 individuals off of Welfare. They no longer depend on the Cash Aide. The do still recieve Medi-cal and Food Stamps, but I feel very successful knowing these individuals work for a living..even if they still recieve some assistance. How I was able to do this with these individuals was with your $$$. You shop at my Store, I have the chance to hire someone and train them.. in the end.. one less person on Welfare. GO ME!!!

Also, for 9 months out of the year, I have 12 Developmentally Disabled Adults who are in a program called TIL (Transition to Independent Living) work in my store. In the 9 months, we train them how to do all tasks that my Regular employees do. After they Graduate from the program, they are hireable individuals. In fact, 2 of my students that just graduated are now working for a Target and a total of 4 of my past students have been hired by Goodwill.

So with this being said, YOU shopping at Goodwill really makes a difference in someone's life. PLUS if you don't want to shop thier, you can always donate thier. Donations help just as much as shopping... SO many people aren't educated about Goodwill... but I find that after someone realizes what we do... and who we serve, they view us in a whole new perspective.

Look it's my day off and I am talking about the Goodwill. Man, I love my job and the people I serve!

Nope, you didn't. I hate spending $$ on myself, I don't think any piece of clothing is worth more than $10(lol). The one we shop at is the D.A.V.(Disabled Veterans) Thrift Shop. When I clean house, everything that we don't want/need anymore goes to the thrift shop. I sell on ebay but only porn...

We do have a store at the mall called Steve & Barry's where everything is $9.98. Love that store too, and they sell Sara Jessica Parker's clothing line.

i know what you mean....when i walk in the door of a thrift store it always smells like moth balls. not everything in there smells like them though...it's weird. she's right though. you can find name brand stuff with tags still on it (or even without tags) for a couple of bucks.

i rarely go anymore, but i used to when i was 18, living on my own, and broke! now, i'm so cheap i think goodwill is ripping me off haha! seriously...they are charging like 4 or 5 dollars now for kids pants or shirts when you can go to target, kmart, or wal mart and get shirts or pants brand new on the discount racks.

If you count it as exercise, will you bother to get in more physical activity when you are off work?

If the answer is "no" then you probably shouldn't consider the walking you do at work as exercise.

i was wondering the same. I missed my workout today but I work at Burlington Coat Factory in the baby depot section. I had to go up and down stairs 3x a day. I have been on the sales floor straightening merchandise, and helping customers. If i put walking for 8 hr the calories are crazy

I BELIEVE THAT ANY MOVEMENT CAN BE COUNTED AS FORM OF EXERCISE. WHY NOT! I SIT @ MY DESK FOR MOST OF THE DAY. I HAVE TO TELL MYSELF TO GET UP AND WALK AROUND. THE GOODWILL STORE. I LOVE THIS STORE.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS STORE HAS A LITTLE OF EVERYTHING IN THERE. ESPECIALLY WORK CLOTHES. LIKE BLAZERS AND DRESSES. THE PRICES ARE SO REASONABLE. WHEN I WAS LITTLE AND MY PARENTS SPOKE ABOUT GETTING US KIDS CLOTHES FROM GOODWILL WE WOULD FROWN OUR FACES. NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DIFFERENT STORY.

It counts! Even sitting and doing nothing burns cals so count it. I just spent 3 hours painting the kitchen and that counts too.

I buy most of our clothes at the thrift store. Love that place!!

Any movement burns calories.....walking definitely is a plus...yes, the exercise gurus will tell you that you have to walk a certain distance a certain way to burn maximum calories, etc. I wouldn't worry about that now...decrease calories, increase movement and you're gonna lose. So YES Virginia there is a Santa Claus and walking is going to help you...

I say it counts. You're still burning calories (albeit, maybe not as many) even if your heart rate isn't going up as much as it would with 30 minutes of strenuous walking.

    Default Tell me Phrends...

I work Retail. I am a Store Manager of a small store and I don't always have an "active" day at work. But for the past 5 days, I have made it a point of going out to my Sales Floor and either straighten racks, find things that do not belong, etc. just to get some extra footsteps in.

Right now I am on my lunch. I have been here for 4 hours. I have taken 2976 steps, which is 1.4 miles and I have burned 244.8 calories. My question to you my phrends, do you guys think this counts as "Exercise" or should I not count it because my heart rate isn't up for atleast 30 minutes? I carry my cell phone in my pocket and it has a built in Pedometer.. It is freakin Awesome!

I also have drank more water this week and replaced soda with Iced Tea. Although I am drinking a Diet Pepsi now, I drank a 32 ounce Iced Tea earlier.

I wanna hear from you... about this exercise stuff...
