Look for ear mites, runny eyes, check out their behind and litter box for runny poo, make sure they arent too skinny and if you see anything, ask what the cat has been or is being treated for

We have the SPCA here.. and I actually went to the City "pound" and adopted one of my cats as a kitten. They gave me a Voucher to get a spay at a discounted price and she got a free.. Well Kitten Check up too.. lol $35. Best cat in the world.. Oh and I got 3 bags of cat food free....

I am so proud that you are adopting.. It's such a good thing.. Millions of Animals are killed ... it's so sad..

I have adopted all my cats from the pound. We have had good luck with them. They normally won't let you adopt them from the pound if they are sick........thats been my experience! Good luck! I tried to post pics of my kitties and doggy but they are too big to upload

Really? My best friend has a cat that she got from North Shore and she hasn't had any issues. Whatever you decide you are absolutely correct in researching the shelter that you get the animal from.
Does it have to be an adopted animal? I purchased my dog from a reputable breeder, you could also look into cat breeders..................just a thought

you know i heard some bad things about north shore animal league, plus they want big donations......I know some people that got sick puppies from tehre and they had to bring the puppies back and the dogs died....

there is a crazy cat lady close to here that gives away kittens if you give her some money so you can feed the est of her her cats, but I doubt she takes these 400 cats to the vet...LOL....but atleast if people take the cats away from her she won't have as many to feed and take care of.....

there's a shelter that i went to a benefit for , I may go there first.......its an hour from here..i just want to make sure there is a vet on staff that looks at these animals. I have no problem paying for shots.....but I don't want a sick animal either...

    thanks for the info.

What state are you in? I'm in NC and there is a shelter called Adopt An Angel, I know that their cats and kittens are taken to the vet and treated for ant illnesses so that they are healthy before they go to their forever homes. I adopted a kitten from them but had to give it back because my son was allergic.

I know in NY there is the North Shore Animal Leaque that is pretty reputable. Maybe even try the ASPCA in your area.

    Default Adopting a kitty; OT

I'm thinking of adopting a kitten. Can anyone tell me what to look for when i go to the shelter other than it not having fleas or glassy eyes? I'm nervous i'm going to get some sickly cat, I hear such horror stories about these shelters....at the same time I wnat to adopt a cat and give it a good home instead of going out to buy one.
I did it!! Reached goal and have been here for quite a while thanks to low carb eating and working out like crazy! Phen didn't work for me, but that isn't to say that there aren't other ways. God bless all of you!
