I kept my maiden name. It's not a political statement or some manifestation of uber-feminism. Professionally, changing my name would be an ordeal. I did offer (though I didn't really want to) to change it, and his answer was "I wouldn't change my name, why would I expect you to?" Good answer dear. He's as proud of his severely German surname, as I am of my French one.

The important thing is that YOU (and to a lesser extent, your spouse) need to be comfortable with what you do.

I knew a couple that took neither name. They made up a new name from both their last names. Example: Jones-Beatty becomes Jontty or Beanes.
I thought it was strange, and both lost their family name.

My mom has her middle, maiden, married last name. ex-Jane Susie Doe Smith and on some things just Jane D. Smith. I just dropped my maiden name and use Laura- middle- married. Now I'm divorced with a child so I have been considering what to do if I remarry. (I better remarry, I'm only 27&need more babies!)

I wasn't talking about hyphenating the children's name. The children could have your maiden name as a middle name. I must have not been clear!

Hey M, just wanted to drop in and tell you I'm so happy for you girl. On the names, mine is hyphenated, and my 2 children from my first marriage have their dad's name. It works out either way.

    Hugs to you girl.

My name is hyphenated. So it's my first name, middle, last-then his last. And my kids have their last names like that as well. Sometimes, for like insurance purposes through his work, we have them listed with just his name. And then there are times when I have signed them up for classes and I'm the one taking them, then we just use my last name. It really hasn't been that big of a deal for us.

Thanks for all the replies, but maybe I confused some people. I am NOT going to hyphenate my name. I was thinking of dropping my middle name and put my maiden name in place of it - that was my first thought. Then I thought about keeping my middle name also and basically just having 2 middle names - my middle name and my maiden name. My children will carry on their father's last name and it will only be one name, not two and not hyphenated.

    Does that make more sense?

    Thanks again!!

I would drop the middle name and have your maiden as middle and hubbys as last. It seems less complicated. Especially if/when you have kiddos.

I know of a couple that got married and she kept her maiden name. They have 2 sons and one has her last name and one has his. It just gets weird-I personally just took my husbands last name.

I would think that if you gave your kids the hyphenated name it would get confusing after awhile. What if you have a daughter? When she gets married would her name be First name, middle name, mom's maiden name, mom and dad's last name, husband's last name? And what about her daughter's name? I would hate to be the one filling out paper work with the bubbles you have to fill in if I had thast long of a name LOL!
I personally did it the old fashioned way. But if you really wanted to keep your madien name I would drop your middle name. IMHO it kind of lessens the impact of the gift your husband is giving you (his last name) if you hyphenate. You two are one now.
Like I said this is just my own opinion though. Lots of people feel differently.

If you are planning on having kids, a new trend is to give them your maiden name as a middle name. I guess it just depends on what the name is but sometimes it flows nicely.

Jodi - I'm glad the wedding went the way you wanted it. Can't you just keep your first and middle name and hyphenate your last name. So it would be Jodi (middlename) (maiden name)-(New last name). As long as it's hyphenated, I think you can still use just the last one or use both, depending on whatever mood you are in at the time.
    Have a great day!

When I told my boyfriend I wanted to keep my maiden name he was upset at first. But I decided to do what you were thinking about. I feel like all of my names I've had for twenty five years are a part of who I am... So I will just be adding on his to the end of them all! I will go by his name for the sake of our kids, but I'll still always have the names my parents gave me as well.

I personally, kept my first and middle names and took my husbands last name. Only because my maiden name was smith ...sooo boring! hehe
if a hypenated name flows and its not too incredibly long, i say go for it! you can always change it later if it doesnt work for you. OH and CONGRATULATIONS!!

    Question

Ok, so I got married on January 1st - thanks again for the outfit decision, it worked our PERFECTLY! Now I have to decide what to do with my name. I am going to take my husbands last name but I dont want to let go of my maiden name. I know a lot of states, it is tradition for the woman to change her last name to her middle name, drop her middle name and then take her new husbands last name so it would be Jodi (Maiden name) (New Last Name).

My question is...would you completely drop your middle name? I kinda like that name too !!! LOL!!

Just getting other's thoughts! What did you do?
