Essence - I agree that although the media is not at fault for the misinformation, it is their responsiblity to CONFIRM information. That they did not do.

The mining company should have told the families the information they had may not be correct as soon as they knew, which was after about twenty minutes. Instead of letting these poor people continue to think they would be seeing their loved ones for three hours!

Still, just a tragic all the way around.

    BTW, love the Gandhi quote

my prayers go out to all the families affected. i too was praising and thanking God that the miners were ok. i assign fault to the media for broadcasting misinformation and the mining company which in my layperson opinion was slow to respond.

I don't think the media is to blame here. I don't think anyone is to blame. It's just something awful that happened.

It seems that what caused the mix up was one of the rescuers called the command station stating that they had found the miners and were "assessing their medical condition". A volunteer, who was a family member, heard that and took that to mean they were alive. Which I can understand. If I heard they were assessing someone's medical condition, I don't think it's a big leap to assume that means someone is alive.

The volunteer ran to tell family members and word spread like wildfire. The media was just reporting based on the rejoicing that was going on.

It was all just a big, tragic, heartbreaking mistake.

I was in shock when I saw the change of headline this morning. This situation is the definition of heartwrenching.

That has got to be one of the hardest things to go through I would think. To have such hope, then have it confirmed and then to be let down. It's just awful. But you know the media, etc, lets see if anyone steps up and take responsibility for this, right now they are all pointing fingers.

unbelievable.I cant imagine 1 minute not knowing, the next thinking they are alive, then finding out there all gone! My heart really goes out to all these families.I really feel for the man who survived this- the trauma he went through down there while everyone had died around him......lots of prayer needed that way.

i have to agree with nynavae...there is no possible reason the mining co. would of said they were alive when they didnt know as yet...i think something about them being found was overheard and the media jumped the gun....when they found them it took lots of time to get to each one and check them out completely even for the faintest heartbeat...i do not think the mining company intentionally waited 3 hours...i think it took that much time till they knew for sure the situation...
regardless it is a sad day...

I tend to blame the media. It sounds like somebody jumped the gun without any official statements from anyone and ran with it. Very tragic for the families. So sad overall.

I was deeply saddened when I saw the Today Show and saw the families rejoicing for 3 hours after they were told their familiy members had survived. Will be in prayer for all of the family members.
