Given To Heart Patients To Lose Weight Quickly But Healthily

I came across this soup last year. There are a few going around, and I've tried most, and been unhappy.

This one is based on tomatoes, so it's like having a minestrone soup, which I think appeals to most people.

You'll lose with just replacing 1 meal, but for rapid loss replace 2 meals per day with this soup. AND DON'T HAVE ANY BREAD WITH IT

Ingredients are:

2 smaller tins (400g) of chopped green beans
2 large tins (800g) of crushed/chopped tomatoes
2 large tins or 4 smaller tins of beef consume’
1 whole celery chopped (leaves also)
1 whole spring onion bunch chopped (tops also)
4 carrots peeled and sliced
1 packet of vegetable soup mix
8 cups of water

Method:

Combine all ingredients in very large saucepan.
Bring to boil
Cook for 45 mins or until celery and carrots are cooked.

N.B: I think the soup is fine on it's own. But I've added a few things to give it some extra flavour and bulk. I added 2 handfuls of macaroni, 2 handfuls of lean bacon pieces, 1 handful of corn kernels. It helps to fill it out a little, and then you don't even want bread with it. You'll need a huge pot to cook it in. It's also freezable. I'm just replacing my lunches and giving it to my 2year old as well, not for weight loss, but to give him all the essential nutrients that come from the vegies.

They give this recipe to heart patients that need to lose weight quickly, and safely, before they go under surgery. It's been put out by the Heart Foundation Of Australia.

Give it a go. Aside from anything else. If helps curb the appetite, and helps shed more. Then it can only be a good thing.

It's also fairly cheap - using supermarket brand tins for the ingredients, and lasts quite a while. I don't often get bored of it either.

GOOD LUCK!
- Amanda

Hi. As far as I know there is a reason for those particular ingredients. For example, they work together to make the weight loss much better. By adding, as I understand it, makes the weight loss less substantial. But lets be honest, you've got to enjoy it too. I've added the other ingredients to make it more enjoyable. I think the weight loss will be ok, but perhaps by adding them, it won't be the best that it can be. Does that make sense? The fact that it has so many vegetables in it as it is can only be a good thing anyway. What were you thinking of changing?

I personally do not like tomatoes. The flavor is tolerable, but not great. Is there chunks of tomato in it? I may give that a try. Thanks for the recipe.

... The recipe calls for tinned chopped tomatoes. When I put them in the soup last week (made a batch)... they started out a bit chunky. By the end of it though after boiling, the soup liquid is tomato flaveroued, and the colour is red, but there is hardly any chunks at all.. even then they would be only 1/2 cm across. Perhaps try the crushed tomatoes instead... that way they'll be nothing but mush by the end of the cooking! also, i added a little parmesan cheese to my bowl and it's really scrummy!

Good luck! and i hope it tastes nice.

Cris..
You might be surprised.. granted, I'm a fan of soups in general, but even my 2 year old gets stuck into it... and my hubby, who's a fan of anything processed!
i was pleasantly surprised at the flavour. Sure if you eat it 2 times daily it can get a bit wearing, but it doesn't feel like a diet soup at the time. You just get a little tired of eating the same thing endlessly.
I'm having it for lunch only at the moment, just so I can make sure I have something for a start, and it isn't something "unhealthy" on the fly as during the day with the two kiddies, i find i'm eating at 3pm. this way i get somethign good into my system.

Make a smaller batch, (since this will make a huge amount) and give it a go!

ooh michelle, that sounds really good.. Will try that with the next batch! nothin' like a good bay leaf to add extra oomph!

Cloud: tinned vegies, / canned vegies..like corn kernels, potatoes, etc.. condesnsed soups etc... like the ones you'd find spaghetti or baked beans in for long term storage...

hmmm, ya know what, I think I am going to give it a go. THey don't have to eat it, because I can freeze this for myself later. Bay leaf is a good idea.

With the cooler weather creeping upon us, I've started craving soup. I had made a batch of this soup a few months ago and still have a couple of small containers of it in my freezer. Voila... dinner!

Now I'm going to have to make another batch! BTW, I like adding seaweed. Yum!
