Question
I am in desparate need of losing weight. I also would like to quit smoking. I always tell people one at a time, weight loss then I'll worry about quiting smoking. Now I'm reading about this drug combo and wondering if this could help me battle both problems, AT THE SAME TIME? Please share your updates, after being on both. Thanks in advance,
Double the Trouble!

Hi Carolyn, I took them at the same time, worked well, but I ended up not being able to take Wellbutrin b/c side effect of migraines. Do you take Wellbutrin now? :)

No. I've never tried it. Haven't even tried to quit in about 5 years, Hate setting my self up for failure. My whole problem is willpower, with the weight loss attempts too. I can be 150% motivated one day then about three days later its completely gone. I'm not even on phen right now. I've tried it once a few months ago (30mg) but didn't take it consistantly. I think I need to try the 37.5mg. Thanks.

Hi...I actually just started taking them together today. My Dr says they do work well together so we'll see if I can handle any side effects I might get.

The 37.5 works very well for me I take one a day and can sleep at night.

Well, let me tell you, and from very good experience. I've been taking wellbutrin with phen for about 2 months now. It is perfectly ok. I tried everything to quit smoking, patch, hypnosis, gum, you name it. Wellbutrin (zyban) is the best thing that worked. It will work for you, I can guarantee it. The thing about wellbutring is that it goes directly to the source of the craving which is in your brain. It represses the receptors that crave nicotine. Another thing, it is the only one that you can continue to smoke on, because it is not a nicotine replacement, such as the gum, etc. You set a goal of 14 days, keep smoking while taking your pill, and you will see that after about 5 or six days, you will be going without cigarettes for longer periods of time and not only that, but the cigarette will taste so much different, (it tasted like soap to me) that you will turn it off. It will no longer bring you the pleasure it used to. My doctor prescribed it to me, she gave me 5 months worth (just in case I needed to take it longer). Frankly, I only smoke 1 or 2 a day, I could stop if I wanted to, but I really do it now because of stupid habit, not because I need it like I used to. Now for phen and wellbutrin, I think that the combination is what helped me lose the weight that I lost. Wellbutrin also supresses your appetite (at least it did me). They are perfectly ok to take together. I take 37.5mg of phen and I don't remember what mg of wellbutrin, but I take it twice a day. I heard that if you use nicorette gum to compensate for the cravings while on wellbutrin, it has a great success rate also. I don't do it, because it is just replacing one source of nicotine (cig) for another. This would be, I suppose, if you don't want the smell of cigs on you, for your teeth, etc. Hope this helps.

Carolyn, Insurance does pay for Welbutrin if it's written as Welbutrin and not Zyban. They are the same drug but written as Zyban is to stop smoking and ins. won't cover that. Most Dr's will write the script for "depression" so it is covered.
I start my welbutrin this Friday 2-21-03

#1 to quit smoking.

#2 Depression-My daughter (7 years old has cancer so who wouldn't be depressed)

#3 The welbutrin and phen combined is supposed to work great!!

I'm taking Wellbutrin SR 150mg twice a day, eight hours apart or so, started them about a week ago. My doc isn't a big phen fan, and wasn't too happy with my continuing to take it. Noncompliant me decided to do it anyway, and i kept taking the 37.5mg dose.

Yesterday i had a horrid headache i couldn't get rid of, so i got a friend to take my blood pressure at work. It was 142/102, which is high for me (102 is high for anyone, really). So i skipped the phen today and did better, although i was a little hungry at times. I'm sort of thinking of dropping the phen dose to half a pill every day and seeing if it works without my b/p going way up.

So far i do like the wellbutrin, but it takes a few weeks to hit a good level with it. i have had occasional dizziness, but nothing major. Hubby says I'm way nicer already.

Hi,

I have been taking Phentermine on and off for several years now.
I just started the Wellbutrin SR and I have been told that it's great together and usually there no side effects.

If you go over to: My experiences with Phentermine and scroll through the pages, I asked this question about 3 days ago. I got alot of great responses from regulars here on the board.

Good luck and I'm with you all the way.
