Default Is phentermine safe if.....

My mom is wanting to see if she would be able to take phentermine she wants me to ask my doctor when I see him on dec 28th for my next check up. She has a prolapsed valve. I was thinking she probably wouldn't be able to be on phentermine but I guess I don't know for sure. Does anyone have any heart problems and are on phentermine???

By no means am I dispensing medical advice nor does this replace the judgment of a licensed health care practitioner.

I'd probably err on the side of caution and say that your mother wouldn't be able to take phentermine based on this statement I saw in an article

"Unless otherwise contraindicated, many people with MVPS benefit from non-drug interventions, such as increased fluid and sodium intake, avoiding adrenalin-like substances found in many over-the-counter medications, avoiding caffeine, and getting regular cardiovascular exercise."

excerpt from: Taking control: Living with the mitral valve prolapse syndrome.(3rd ed.)

http://www.wright.edu/nursing/practice/mvp/mvppage.htm

phentermine is a stimulant...and i think that would be a dangerous combination.

I have a heart murmur. It's a valve issue but it's not a "prolapsed valve." I've checked wiki but I'm not sure what's the exact difference between your mom's valve problem and mine; the prolapsed valve people have a murmur too, but it seems related to the Mitral valve. I don't even know which of the 4 valves my murmur occurs. Mine is probably a different one because 25 years worth of doctors and nurses have only ever called it a "murmur."

My doctor who prescribed my Phen pays attention to my heart. I have a heart-rate-monitor-watch-thing purchased from Walmart about a year ago. It's been really useful. The only heart issue I've had is a rapid heart rate when running; I was seeing the 170s instead of pre-Phen 150s -- I'm 40 so 170s was really dangerous. I was ordered to knock off the strenuous exercise. He also had me taking only 15 mg at first; this was probably to make sure that my heart could handle it.

As long as your mom and her doctor pay attention to the effects of Phen on her heart, I wouldn't fret...but I would get one of those heart rate monitor things for your mom. I hope this helped.

yeah my mom seems to have always had a really slow heart rate. She has just recently in the past 6 months had been told she had a prolapse valve. She told me she was going to call her cardiologist to ask what he thought first. Which is probably a good idea.

Definitely have her consult with a cardiologist first. Even if a doctor says its okay, that doesn't mean it is. That would be like letting the kidney doctor prescribe the treatment for your lungs.

If and only if the cardiologist says its okay, would I proceed, because he knows her history, and current medications and any interactions that may take place.

She has a cardiologist? Yeah, she definitely needs to talk to the specialist. No one ever been interested in my heart murmur, other than one friend who had just started nursing school. The most ominous comment I've received in 25 years of stethoscopes is "it's loud."

My resting heart rate had been slow, low 60s, but on Phen it's in the 70s. My watch thing caught the exercising heart rate.

JIMSWIFE: Congratulations on the 100s! I just noticed your "woohoo!" in your siggie.
