For us Newbies... I heard Diets Fail!!??!!!
Welcome!! I was once told by a doctor that Diets fail because they have a beggining and a end. Most people want a fix and once they reach goal will go back to their normal eating habits. They say Diets are a made to fail and thus creating millions of dollars into gimmicks/ food programs. Don't know how much truth applies to this but he also said that what a person needs to do is change their lifestyle and eating habits permanately for life.
Generally, to maintain your weight you would want to eat as many calories that your body burns daily. (Check your basal metabolic rate) If you eat more than that's weight gain, and vice versa less than is weight loss. I was told that 3500 calories equals 1 lbs. If you are looking to loose weight perferally you want to reduce your calorie intake by 500 calories so someone like me who's rate is in the 1800's, ideally I should eat 1300 calories a day, creating a daily deficit of 500 which is 3500 calories in 7 day period loosing one pound. Of course everyone wants to loose more including me.! You need to consider that the rate of 1800 is at a sedetary position so your daily activities plus excercise in the mix should actually increase mine is about 2200 - 2400 calories burn a day, ( I have the body bugg so I observe everyday pretty accurate) which means I have about a 1000 or more deficit every day causing me to loose more than a pound a week.
You should also want to work out/ muscle tone. Muscle burns more calories thus get rid of fat. If you loose you want to aim to loose body fat not muscle. On the contradary muscle weighs more than fat so if you see the weight gain don't be alarmed. You probably want to get an accurate reading of your BMI or BIA to make sure you are moving in the right direction. For some you can look tone and fit at a higher weight than someone who is flabby and weights less. Also remember sometimes your loss will be in inches not so much in the scale.
Drink Lots of water!!! Water is an important key. They say to drink half your body weight in water. Think of a disposal, when you are cleaning your sink you turn on the water to help flush out the nasty stuff. They same is for your body. Flush out the toxins and keep well hydrodrated.
For food whatever you choose ideally you want to eat about every 2-3 hours little small meals, You definitely don't want to slow your metabolism so try not to skip any meals. You also would want to eat the biggest meal at breakfast if you into eating a big meal, Your body has woken up from an 8+ hour fasting. You want to turn on your metabolism machine so eat breakfast. Eating small meals throught out the day should keep your body stabolized in sugar levels and your metabolism running. They also say eat lean meats such as turkey chicken skinless breast/ fish/ eggs/ lamb and lean beef. I could go on and on but as you see I'm pretty much typing a book...lol!
Eat fruits and veggies! Basically if it grows naturally, bleeds, living, ect. those are the foods that you should eat...Try to stay away from processed foods as much as possible. Plus whatever you eat that is not processed is going to benefit your body and help the breaking down process. I heard a doctor said that an egg is an egg no matter what price you pay, maybe a hen is walking free but your body is still going to get the same nutrients. Skim milk has the same nutrients as Whole Milk except Whole milk has a whole lotta calories. So look into food labels and get educated. After all hopefully the goal is to be healthy.
I'm not saying deprive or stay away from your fav foods either but try to limit them.
Key factor*** Your stomach is the size of your fist. Your body shouldn't need to eat more than that. It's the way we learned how to eat in the first place that got us to where we are at. We don't have to eat everything in front of us and we need to reset our mind into thinking that we don't live to eat but eat to live. We need to get a new eating habit and therefore let this experience be the one to re-learn how to properly eat and nuture our bodies. I also heard that as we age about every decade or so we loose 1000 of our metabolic rate too so that is why a person can't always eat the same like they they were as a kid or in their younger years. I apoligize if this is a book but I think I'm gonna post this on new thread so everyone who is interesed can read. Hope it helps and good luck to us all
