Default How do I maintain the positive effects of phentermine over time?
Hi, I'm a newbie to this site. I've been taking phentermine for three months now and have lost 32 lbs going from 242 to 210. I'm really happy about that plus the fact that my blood pressure is normalizing and my diabetes is improving also. I've been walking 2-3 miles a day now. I started out walking 1/4 mi/day. This is all great.
My problem is the phen is starting to lose it's effectiveness. Apparently, I haven't learned to stop binge eating because I took that up again. I know it's only a matter of time before the weight creeps back on. I tried going off the phen for a few days hoping it would have a stronger effect when I went back on but I get sooooo sleepy. I know it's a upper and it has really done it's job in a very positive way. How do I maintain that effect? Any help out there?

Nice to meet you too. Do you have any suggestions? I'm really desperate because I know my doctor won't proscribe it any more if she doesn't see improvement every month.

I have suggestions ... but I feel like a hypocrite.

But inmyopinion - it's all about learning new HABITS. Also, planning. However binge eating is rooted deep and I know I need to find out my root cause and deal with it.
When I think I know everything ... and have it worked out ... I find that it was only temporary and back to the drawing board.

I went from 228 to 197 on Phen ... stopped it for a bit when I realized I wasn't really playing by the rules anyway ... stayed away from the scale for awhile until today, I was up to 210.
And this is a matter of less than a month - maybe even 2 wks. So you are singing to the choir when you talk to me about binge eating.

Sorry - really sorry ... I wish I could offer good advice, because I need to take it as well.

Nice to meet you Bridget! One idea to boost your fat burning is to change up your work outs. Walking is a great start and is by all means it is good for you. The problem is, your body get used to the walking and eventually it becomes too easy for you. This, in turn, slows the amount of calories/fat you are burning. I suggest doing something to push your self...maybe jog for a few minute then speed walk...repeat. I bet you will feel much more of a work out if you do that for 2-3 miles. Once that is easy for you, do stairs or something you usually have trouble doing. You will feel great everytime you accomplish a new exercise goal and it will show results!
As for the binge eating, try eating things that will fill you up and be used as fuel for your metabolism. i.e. lean protiens, fiber...

I think I'll try that. It's getting so hot and humid here in South Carolina I have to get up reaaallly early to beat the heat. Plus, there's a lot of "weather" now too so I have to find something other than walking. Thanks for the suggestion on changing up my exercise routine.
As far as the binge eating goes, it's mostly due to boredom right now. I know I need to get out more rather than staying home so much.

Hi Bridget and welcome. I use to binge eat all the time. What did it for me.....is when I reach 290 and my skin felt like it was going to split. I didn't stop right away....I had to take it one day at a time. And I replace all the bad foods with healthy foods....carrots, celery...you know what I mean. Here is the kicker, I didn't eat those foods because I really didn't want them so I didn't eat anything. I didn't eat the good foods but I didn't have the bad foods either. And you do have to get to the root cause...mine was related to my emotions. But, now I have that under control and I don't get so emotional like I use tooooooooo. I hope this helps.

Hi Bridget! I'm from SC too! Mind revealing where you're located? I'm in the upstate near Greenville/Spartanburg. I know all too well what you mean by the heat. Are you walking in the morning or evening? Do you have a YMCA or gym near you? I ask because I like to take spinning classes (indoor groups cycling to music). It will at least get you in the air conditioning. You could try to switch walking for spinning twice a week to refresh your routine. Good luck!

Hi Raquel. Thanks for your reply and I don't think you're a hypocrite at all! If my weight loss success was based on knowing how to diet, I would be thin. You obviously know how to lose weight but, maybe like me, it's a different subject on how to keep it off. And this is what bothers my about taking drugs to lose weight. At what point will I be able to go it alone? I keep saying that the phentermine has enabled me to make better choices, which I do. But, now that I've been off for a couple weeks, that has seemed to have fallen by the wayside.
I'm glad I've found this forum to talk to you and others about how to work this out.

I'm from the Charleston area, south of you. I just moved here a couple of years ago from northern California. I do get up to Greenville occasionally cuz my daughter lives there.
