    Default Can someone explain ketosis?

I saw a few ladies discussing ketosis in another thread. What is this? How does it work? and does it help?

When you cut carbohydrates out of your diet and focus on protein your body will begin to burn fat for energy, and this process is called ketosis. Normally our bodies use glucose for fuel, but when you cut that out and just give your body protein (or mainly protein) it can no longer rely on glucose... so it goes strictly into fat burning mode. You can test your level of ketosis by using Ketostyx, which you can buy at Walgreens. It's like a little strip that you pee on and the color shows how far you are into ketosis. The waste products of ketosis are called ketones and they're secreted in your urine (hence the pee test).

And yes, it helps a lot! Normally if you severely restrict your calories you'll lose muscle mass along with losing fat. When doing the ketosis approach your body won't cannibalize your muscle. This is what the nurse at my weightloss clinic said.

Anyway, it's all about what you put in your gas tank!

In 2008 I lost 91 pounds, but I've gained it all back... so here I am, at square one, but not for long.

I can't do the low carb thing... It backs me up and I don't have the will power to stay on it. I have done it before and it works until I fall off and can't bring myself to get back on. Applause to those of that can do it. You should be very proud!
    Keep on Keepin' on!

I am one of those that cant stick to it very long. I always lose weight when i am on it though. I think im going to start back tomorrow. I would today but i have to go buy the food first. All i have here are lean cuisine meals and a lot of fruit.
