Hi Ladies!

I went to the Discovery.Health.com site and went to the 40's article. Here's the URL: http://health.discovery.com/converge...ogram/40s.html

And here's the first step of 12.

12 Weeks to Success in Your 40s
By Pamela Peeke, M.D.

Week 1: Make the Commitment

-Hang your Body Challenge contract somewhere you can see it every day.
-This is the age of "girth control." Everyone's tummies are expanding — unless you commit to the Body Challenge.
-Measure the smallest part of your waist across the belly button. The goal for women is to get below 35 inches; for men, it's below 37 inches.
-Pick out a tight piece of clothing that you can get on but can't yet fully button or zip. That's your clothes-o-meter. Put it on once a week prior to weighing yourself at home. Your goal is to get it to fit.
-Get your pedometer. Aim to add 500-1,000 steps a day until you reach your daily goal of 10,000 steps a day.
-Avoid processed foods. Minimize white carbs (table sugar, bread, pasta, rice and potatoes).
-Get in five servings of veggies a day.
_____________________________________________

This looks like some good advice. Gotta run now... to pick out my clothes-o-meter.

Fit, you are always welcome!

Well, I went home and found my clothes-o-meter. I bought a pair of red canvas-type capris with white stiching on sale at the end of the summer. Said it was an 18! Ha! No wonder they were only $5... no one sized 18 could get into them. I can only zip them half-way up... I want to wear them this summer.

Anyone else find theirs?

Phen I have the perfect outfit as well. Last summer I bought a cute capri set hoping I would've been able to wear it for my upcoming cruise but it does't fit. It's a size 3x and I thought sure it would fit. I looked at the label and realized why. It was made in China. Their 3x is no where near an american made 3x. Oh well! I hope to be able to wear it this summer. Wish me well.

Hi Ladies! Just checking in to see how everyone is doing... and posting the 2nd week's advice. I didn't want to wait for a week.
_____________________________________________

Week 2: Customize Your Eating Plan

Your 40-something metabolism will not let you overeat and get away with it.
Ramp up the intensity in your workouts. Get some hills in your walking. Lift slightly heavier weights. Do yoga for better flexibility as you age.
Rid your kitchen of any processed foods. Try soy-based protein products (milk, veggie burgers, beans, tofu, shakes, energy bars).
After 5 p.m., eliminate or minimize your intake of any starch (bread, pasta, rice, potatoes). Concentrate on salads, veggies, protein and fruit.
Take one multivitamin a day.
_______________________________________________

I know I should really be taking a daily vitamin. Does anyone here take one? What's good? What do we need as women in our 40's? Any advice?

Hi Annie and all the 40 plus girls,
I take a multi vitamin..basically any over the counter vitamin will have most of the nutrients needed ...but calcium is a biggie at our age so a calcium supplement as well is good. unfortunetly I get enough from taking Tums! But Im finding the better I eat the less heartburn I have. Hope everyone is doing great!

Good information, thanks Phen. I don't have a pedometer. I know it must vary, but does anyone know how many steps in a mile if you are about 5'6"? Right now I feel fortunate that my "fat pants" are no longer too tight, but I like the bit about the clothes-o-meter.

Unfortunately, being the packrat I am, I have many clothes-o-meters that are still 20 or 30 pounds away from fitting. See, there was a reason I didn't toss them!

Morning Moondust!

One mile has 5,280 feet. Measure your stride... my stride is 3'. Then divide 5,280 by your stride.

5,280/3=1760 I have 1760 strides per minute.

Other ways to measure:
-drive a mile away to mark off a walking route... round trip will be two miles. (time how long it took you to walk a mile
-average speed will take 20-25 minutes to walk a mile
-speed walking will take about 15 min/mile
-you should be able to pick up a pedometer at Wal-Mart or a sporting goods store for as little as $6 or as much as $50.

Have fun walking!

Welcome Terry!

There are TONS of great workout videos out there. I do Pilates and Leslie Sansones walking tape. I'm thinking about getting The Firm (with weights).

You could probably rent some to see which ones suit you.

Good Luck and have fun!
