Default Best diet/Way of eating?

What type of diets have worked for people? Low fat? Low carb? Calorie counting? High fiber? Please give feedback on what has worked for you. Thank you.

This is my second time on Phentermine. The first time I lost 42 pounds and only gained back 6 over a 5 month period. I have changed doctors. The first doctor just told me to watch calories and exercise. This doctor recommends a high fiber/low fat diet. In keeping my fat to 25 grams a day, my carbs are running about 150 on a 1000 calorie a day diet. I am skeptical as to whether or not this will work.

He also mentioned using the Ketostix to test to see if I am burning fat. My understanding is that they will not change color unless you are eating low carb. The impression I got from the doctor was that if it does not show pink, I need to exercise more. Currently, I am walking 45 minutes a day. Does anyone know if exersize with a moderate carb diet will induce ketosis? Once again, I am skeptical.

Thanks all

I would stick to low sugar and low fat. From my understanding, you have to cut out everything but protein to get your body into a ketosis state, so if you are eating normally you should be fine. Just watch where your carbs are coming from.

I have to limit fat in order to have success. I also eat small meals all day long. The more veggies the better. Fiber will keep you full and help in other areas also.

Good Luck!

I went last night and according to my doctor, she said to do 1000-1200 calorie diet. 300 in dairy, 300 in fruits, 300 in protein, plus dressing, etc and any vegetables... I've done reduced calorie diets before but the problem is you're starving! So I guess the master plan is with the pills, you're not as hungry, so just space it out... I just started this morning, so as far as results I have none yet, BUT I'm excited to report them when I do!

When I went to get my script of phen my doctor gave me a handout on the south beach diet and the atkins diet. He said the best thing I could do to lose weight is to cut carbs. He said that from a doctors standpoint, the south beach diet is better than the atkins because the atkins allows so much fat, and to much fat can cause other health problems. I haven't been doing the best with dieting, so I can't vouch for whether or not they work. The pills make me not hungry.....but I make bad choices with the food I do eat.

It is generally believed that calories matter most when it comes to weight loss. That may be true, but new studies show that a diet moderately high in protein is superior for fat loss.

By increasing the amount of protein in your diet and reducing the amount of carbs (not dramatically but just lowering them) your body changes from a carbohydrate-burning engine into a fat-burning engine.

More protein in your diet also helps make you feel fuller for longer. I eat lots of veggies and salads but very little (if any) bread, rice, pasta etc.

I hope this helps.

Thank you all so much. I tried cutting out some of my carbs yesterday and discovered that I really do need them - in the form of veggies and fruits. I think several days of under 1000 calories got to me yesterday. I was light-headed, tired easily, sweating, nauseaus and generally icky feeling. I upped my calories to around 1300 and made home-made wheat bread to go with dinner. I feel much better today.

I think I will stick to lean protiens, veggies, fruits and occasional bread, brown rice or pasta.

Also, if you have too much protein in your diet and not enough carbs you may feel tired throughout the day.

I have read a lot about low fat diets. I can’t stick to the diet myself. I love sweets very much and just can’t eliminate them from my daily menu. I tried to count calories. It gives me more headache than a result. And I can’t eat at the same time every day because my working schedule doesn’t always have free ‘windows’ for a proper lunch.

Nikkiiipurple mentioned the importance of getting more proteins. This is the only thing I can manage to do. I have read that if you eat vegetables, fish, eggs, drink more water every day but say ‘no’ to carrots, potatoes, corn, all fruits, nuts, bread, sugar, fruit tea you will lose many pounds in almost no time. I hope this can help some of you to achieve your weight loss goal.

Not sure you're going to go in to ketosis with 150 carb count. Usually 20 is better.. but you can give it a whirl and see how it goes.. just make sure they are smart carbs like vegetables which digest at a slow rate... if you eat sweets or simple carbs.. even if it's only 150 of them chances of ketosis is slim.

I'm doubling-checking my facts, so let me see if I can explain this. (Lol, once upon a time, I could have drawn and diagrammed the Krebs cycle....but then I passed that exam.) Ketosis occurs for everyone after waking up when there's no food in the system and the body has been relying on stored fat during sleep. It's a mechanism that provides energy to the cells in the absence of glucose.

If a person eats a high-protein and/or high-fat, low-carb diet, ketosis continues and cells get their fuel that way.

If that person (or anyone) were to eat a piece of toast, organic whole-grain or Wonder bread,* the carbohydrates would trigger insulin, the ketosis path shut off, and eventually the toast is turned into glucose and used as energy for the cells.

*It may seem wrong to put Wonder bread in the same league as organic whole grain bread; granted that organic whole grain bread will take longer to digest and process, at the end of the day, they're both still bread made from carbohydrate.

My own path is low-carb, but that's only come as the result of failing so miserably on low-fat or low-cal. And lately, I've shifted into even lower carbs. Different people benefit from different approaches. I really believe that the worst that can happen by picking the "wrong" approach is gaining knowledge, which leads to a "better" revised plan.

Yep one slice of toast could knock you right out.....also.. which I'm not sure a lot of people are aware.... if you over exercise with out eating some complex carbs it can also knock you out... your liver holds on to glucose for such emergencies... and when you exercise for extended periods of time it releases it into your system and ketosis ceases.

Ketosis can be a dangerous thing if done for extended periods, especially for your liver. I have done this with great success. I was basically living on protein shakes and occasionally other forms of protein (chicken breast, fish, eggs, etc..) Celebrities do this a lot to tone up. It basically uses your body's fat as energy. You can take in as much protein as you want. If you are lifting weights or exercising the protein will maintain your muscles. Rapid muscle growth can be acheived and maintained as well as quicker muscle recovery. The longer your body is in this state the faster it will burn the fat. The downsides are damage to your liver if done for extended periods and being extremely tired at different times throughout the day. Body builders do this to "cut up" right before competitions and such. It worked for me. I lost 30lbs of fat in about 45 days and gained muscle mass lifting heavily in the gym 5 days a week and also running 5 days a week. You will burn fat without exercise but tone your skin without exercise.

Some foods may take you out of this state but it doesnt take long to get back into it.
