Default the way I eat..low carb high protein diet

Ok so here is some info on a low carb way i eat. I know there are many ppl on here that have asked me so i figured I might as well just write it here..I dont restrict the things I love but rather substitute the way they are made for healthier vesions. I just dont have mashed potatoes, rice, or pasta with every meal anymore. i stick to having veggies and meats that fill me up instead. Taz once sent me a diet plan she was going to try and do and I fixed the parts that would make it much harder to maintain that sort of eating lifestyle. low carb was never really meant to be strict, its meant to go back to the basics of eating..do you think pioneers had bread makers and pasta rollers? No they didnt, they survived on meat and veggies. Thats the way we should eat as well. You will see that a lot of people cannot stick to specific low carb diets like adkins and south beach because they are too strict and they dont allow you to have the things you want, I do not eat this way. I chose to not count carbs, but chose carbs wisely, thus allowing me to still eat the things I love without eating a whole bunch of bad things. Dont just eat eggs and cheese lol, you can have many other things as well. I just fixed Taz's diet plan so in bold is where I put my notes in

You CAN have 2 complementary meals a day, and one reward meal a day! You choose what meal u want to make ur reward meal and what 2 meals u want to make ur complementary meals....(((( I wouldnt exactly give yourself a reward meal everyday, if you have to look forward to one reward meal each day your allowing your mind to become obsessed with food instead of looking at each meal the same. If you think you have to give yourself a reward meal I believe each meal will end up becoming a reward meal. I have had a hard time in the past giving myself food rewards..lets not do that.)))))

Your Complementary meals may include any of the foods listed below....BUT....Remember that your portions should be of average size....In preparing the complementary meals u may boil, broil, saute, bake, poach,or roast,,,,However. Eggs may be fried in a pat or two of butter,or margarine.((((( ok, heres the thing about low carb, you dont really need to worry about the way you cook your food because you should be using good oils and fats in cooking, so go ahead and deep fry some shrimp or whatever you may choose, but of course this is all in moderation..so why worry about how your cooking. Complementary snacks contain the same high fiber, low fat, low carb, foods but are about half the quantity.)))))

    MEAT & POULTRY
    * up to 3 or 4 oz of any of the following meats, poultry, or meat subsititutes at each of ur complementary meals.....((((ok so you want to eat meat, but dont look at the quantity they are telling you. You will get hung up on numbers if you look at strict rules, just eat as much meat as you would like, its great because of the protein.. technically I need around 100 + oz of protein a day being 185 lbs, 5'7 and 20 years old.))))

beef, bacon, cheeseburgers with reg or low fat cheese, chicken, chicken roll, chicken wings, corned beef, dried beef, duck, ham or smoked turkey, hamburgers, lamb, liver...chicken only, luncheon meats...including salami, and bologna, all meat varieites only none with sugar or fillers are allowed.....u may want to choose low fat, low salt, varieites of lunch meats......pastrami.....pork, sausages, tofu, turkey or turkey loaf, turkey wings, veal....(((((basically eat every and all meat! lol, of course you don't want added salt and sugar in your meat, but honestly I haven't ever seen meat that looked like it was lol. Dont worry too much about low fat meat as well, fat content when it comes to low carb is something you have to watch yes, but most of the time its not a big deal, your getting good fats your body needs. Not saturated fats.)))))))

    FISH & SHELLFISH....
you may have 3-4 oz with of any of these at each complementary meals....just be sure to avoid any filler, bread crumbs, or relish......(((((.This is correct, but this doesnt mean that you cant find your own ways of making low carb seafoods with a different batter. you can find low carb recipes on the internet for this, you can still make breaded shrimp and other seafood. No deprivation there.)))))

    bass, bluefish,clams,cod.crabmeat, flounder,haddock, halibut, lobster,mackeral,oysters,perch,salmon(cooked, canned,or fresh>)
sardines(in oil or tomato sauce.., scallaps, shrimp, smelt, sole, sturgeon, swordfish, trout, tuna.

    FATS, OILS,AND DRESSINGS.

1-2 TABLESPOONS WITH EACH OF UR COMPLENMENTARY MEALS....

butter or margarine. corn oil, mayonnaise( regular, substituite, or light)
olive oil, peanut oil, safflower oil, sesame oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil, vegetable oil, commercially available prepared salad dressings ( note that low cal varieties are higher in carbs!! (((((( Yeah, have whatever dressing you would like, dont worry about low fat, all in all not worth the taste or carbs. Remember what i said about good fats, youll hear it a few more times )))))))

    EGGS AND DIARY PRODUCTS...
choose low fat varieties when possible....once again what did I say about low fat?
Up to 2 oz dailey of reg or low fat milk, cream, half and half or low carb non diary creamer in one cup of coffee....(((((If you like whole milk than drink it, your better off with whole milk when it comes to weight loss.what did I say about low fat?)))))))

2 eggs, or equivalent egg substitutes, 2 oz of any cheese, or half cup cottage cheese...or farmer cheese.
you may also combine 2 eggs with one oz of cheese in preparing an omelet remember forget all amounts on this! Dont worry about how many ounces you can eat, just add as much as you think would be a good amount, dont need to splurge just common sense stuff.

    COMPLENMENTARY DIARY FOODS INCLUDE.
sour cream, eggs or low cholesterol substitute
    tofu soybean curd
reg or low fat (can you guess what I'm about to say lol) varities of these cheeses ( watch out for added sugar or wine)
american, blue, brie, camembert, cheddar, colby, cottage reg or low fat, cream cheese, edam, feta, gouda, hot pepper cheese, monterey jack, mozzarella, Parmesan, pasteurized or processed american , swiss, cheese food or spread.
    provolone, ricotta, romano, string.
(((((What a waste of space lol, why didnt they just say all cheese? lol)))))

    VEGGIES AND SALADS!!
must eat 2 cups of any of the following veggies or salad fixings at each of your complementary meals, veggies may be eaten raw or boiled or sauteed.

alfalfa sprouts, arugula, asparagus, bamboo shoots, beans, green or wax, bean sprouts,. cabbage all kinds, capers, cauliflower, celery, chicory, collard greens, cucumbers, cabbage, dill pickles. lettuce, mushroom, okra, onions, parsely, peppers, radishs, scallion, spinach, squash, tomatoes, turnip greens, turnips, watercres, zucchini.

((((((ok well dont go by the darn list, you dot have to have salad if you dont want it and you dont have to have veggies..you dont HAVE to do anything..remember no strictness lol. Most veggies are allowed but carrots aren't..you think thats stops me from eating carrot..no..considering the nutritional value? eat what you want when it comes to veggies..once again moderation of high carb foods though.)))))

    DESSERTS
you may have a low carb gelatin dessert with homemade whipped cream or a low fat low carb no added sugar whipped cream substitute at any of your complementary meals...
DO NOT consume fruits as a dessert at a complementary meal. this is a common mistake -------dont make it urs.....!!!!! save ur regular desserts for your reward meals.....at complementary meals u may also use condiments such as bouillion, all herbs, vinegar, mustard, olives, pepper, salt, soy, white horseradish, avoid or limit catsup and relish.(((((.are you serious, avoid ketchup or relish? I know a lot of adkins/south beach say no ketchup, but Im the ketchup queen and I eat it with everything..the carb content is minimal..how is a tablespoon really going to do much damage? relish I only use in my tuna and I sure as hell wont give up sweet relish in my tuna lol. oh and if you want fruit or dessert, eat it..once agin moderation..but try and make sure the dessert is sugar free or low carb....))))))

DO NOT EAT ANY OF UR REG BREADS OR PANCAKES OR CEREALS/ AT ANY OF YOUR COMPLEMENTARY MEALS.....SAVE THESE FOR YOUR REWARD MEALS......((((( once again jibber jabber..forget complimentary meals, all in all if your diagnosed with insulin resistance, or you want to keep the weight off..this means NONE of the aforementioned breads, cereals, pancakes etc..a person with insulin resistance cannot reward themselves with these products because it probably would lead to diabetes..and then you would have to get used to diet change again. Once again, sensibly you should not have a reward meal. yes, dont eat regular breads, pancakes..and just stay away from cereal..its not worth it..stick to real food or low carb breakfast bars. I love the south beach breakfast bars, Im addicted lol. You can make low carb pancakes with sugar free syrup..there are so many recipes on the internet for delicious foods that wont hurt the budget or your scale)))))

    Default

    heres the rest

    BEVERAGES...
you may drink unlimited quantities of carbonated water, seltzer, club soda, or black coffee or tea,
diet soda that has no fruit juice added is also acceptable,. read the label if it contains more then 4 grams of carbs then avoid the drink....except at your reward meals....If u prefer your coffee with milk or cream u may have one cup of coffee each day with up to about 2 oz of milk, cream, or half and half... add sugar only at reward meals...... ((((( ok what do you see wrong with this picture? where is the regular water? Oh and drinking carbonated water is ok in moderation, but it does contain sodium just like diet sodas...(which are still bad for you) so shame on them for telling ppl that you can have as much as you want of these things..ppl might gain weight from the diet soda alone.))))))

    FRUITS
do not eat any fruits or drink any fruit juices except at your reward meal.....although fruit and fruit juice are healthy foods, consuming them even in small amounts can result in high insulin levels, high insulin levels, in turn will almost certainly produce a hunger, a desire for more carbs and a slowing or stopping of your weight loss..... (((((ok this is stupid...reward yourself with fruit? dont listen to this, yes too much fruit means too much sugar..but I highly doubt you will want more carbs from a damn strawberry lol. Just make sure when you eat fruit eat it on an empty stomach so You can utilize the energy and it not rot ontop of previously eaten food. Eating a fruit for a snack is not a bad thing.)))))

And most important DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!!!!! 6 - 8 GLASSES A DAY.......WATER OR OTHER NON CALORIC LIQUID EACH DAY....THis is important cause most carb addicts do not drink enough liquids and may think they are craving foods when their bodies are actually thirsty.....

NOT ALL VEGGIES ARE CREATED EQUAL....THESE VEGGIES HAVE MORE THEN 4 GRAMS OF CARBS SO ONLY EAT THEM AT UR REWARD MEALS!!!!!

artichokes, avocados, beets, broccoli, brussel sprouts, carrots, chick peas, corn, kidney beans, legumes, lima beans, onions if more then 2 table spoons, peas, potatoes, snow peas, tomatoes,,,if more then half med size,,,,water chestnuts,,,,, ((((ok so once again moderation is always key..but dont count them, dont worry about memorizing them..just eat all foods in moderation.)))))

Ok so you like my way? much easier lol. So basically no deprivation, no counting..just eating to survive..not to obsess. if you want french fries one day then have them, key here is portion control and moderation. I will have french fries 1 time a week or every other week. I had a small amount of potato salad last night. So basically what I have done is taken out unnecessary carbs from my diet. You may ask what do you mean. Well this means no white bread, no processed flours, no dough, and no sugar. This would probably turn most away at this part, but the trick is to make food that you love without these ingredients. make low carb dough with yeast and soy flour or vital wheat gluten. make pancakes with sugar free syrup, have some low carb wheat bread (wonder makes low carb bread thats whole wheat or itallian style), low carb pasta (dreamfields low carb pasta is delicious!). Its all about substitution...I have done it from the beginning..just not with carbs..so no more veggie oil, use olive or EVOO, no margarine use butter or better yet 0 calorie butter spray..I love the sugar free fudge or fruit pops when i do crave sweets. I like the south beach bars or protein shake for breakfast with milk, fruit around 10, lunch is usually a low carb sandwich ( low carb wonder bread is amazing,) and veggies of some sort. snack is either a slim jim, beef jerky, hard boiled egg..nuts , cottage cheese, string cheese so on and so forth..dinner is usually any kind of meat or seafood with veggies or a salad.

    my different dinners are:
    low carb:
    lasagna
    pizza
    turkey burgers
    mac n cheese
    chicken alfredo with broccoli
cajun chicken or turkey over cauliflower
    tacos
    quesidillas
turkey with cream of mushroom soup
    spaghetti
    fish with garlic and herbs
    onion rings
    battered fish or shrimp
    fried chicken etc
    crab cakes
    salmon patties
    green beans and chicken
    meat loaf
    liver and onions
    schnizel
    asparagus with a butter sauce
the list goes on and on

oh and cant forget low carb:
    bread
    muffins
    cookies
    cheesecake
    ice cream
    fudge pops
    sugar free popsicles
    cake

Most of these things require splenda, vital wheat gluten, soy flour, adkins baking mix, and other substitutes that still taste delicious and don't have the bad carb content. You can find so many recipes online.

Ask any questions you may have. hope this helps!

Aly~~ This sounds great. I have a quick question though. I have a problem with kidney stones and have been told not to do the adkin's diet. Does this fall into that caregory? What do you think about me trying this?? I don't want kidney stone problems, but I sure would like the speedier weight loss............

    Thanks for sharing!!!

This is not the adkins or south beach way, they are really to strict and lower carbs to the point where you go into ketosis, which might be an issue for your kidney stones..Im not sure...really all this plan does is stay away from white breads, processed foods, bad carbs like pizza doughs and breads made from regular flour. I also stay away from potatoes and high carb veggies. I no longer eat pasta thats not low carb and I try to keep my protein count up. I don't know if just doing a moderately low carb diet would hurt you. Maybe you could ask the forum if your doctor is not available to ask.

It sounds like a great idea. BTW~~ how are the low carb pasta products?? Do you just get the wheat ones or are they specifically low carb?? I do think I may give this a try and see what happens. I just bought a ton of strawberries and grapes, so I might need to wait a few days to start it. (plus, we got a foot of snow last night so I may not can get out for a couple days) (West TN never gets this kind of snow, it's freaky)

Dreamfields make low carb pasta products, I find them at my grocery store, you can find them all over the internet too. Whole wheat still has a glycemic index, where specific low carb products have few carbs which are acctually digestable. Whole wheat may be better for you but not carb wise. The low carb pasta from dreamfields is delish and I love it.

The pasta is really really good. In fact, if you didn't know beforehand that you were eating low carb pasta, you probably wouldn't guess it.

Only drawback to it is that, at least where we live, we have to order it online. No local stores with it.

    My Weight Chart:

Yes, I could have reset my counter so that it didn't show last years loss and then gain... but I need to remind myself, every day, how easy it is to put it back on.

    I'm bumping this.

This is actually a very good diet to follow. Low carb is what has kept the majority of weight off of me for years. That is until I go on a carb comfort food binge under stress.

I agree that low carb is a great lifestyle because it just goes back to the basics before putting unneeded fillers (like bread, pasta, rice) into your diet. If you follow a less strict version I guarentee anyone will lose weight faster and feel much healthier..yes the first week was hard for me.. I used to crave sweets and chocolate and salts like crazy at night..and usually I satisfied my hunger with a weight watchers bar or something like that but it wasnt low carb..so I craved more..of course I fought it hard and didnt cave..but after the first week of not giving into the chocolates and sweets..eating low carb..and eating sugar free items I no longer crave any chocolate or sweets..I reward myself with a 40 calorie no sugar added popsicle every once in a while but I dont acctually sit there and think about sweets (if your a sugar aholic and love chocolate youd love this diet)..also after the first week my fingers were no longer puffy, as well as my face and ankles. I feel fresh and healthy..I no longer feel bloated and greasy..I overall feel better. I did not send my body into ketosis (eating less than 20 carbs every day for a week) by just eating healthier carbs and cutting out the bad I lost 6 lbs in a week, this is 5 months into phen so It was amazing for me to see such a loss..in 5 months not doing low carb I only lost 30 lbs, i was upset because I was working sooo hard and getting practically nowhere..I was eating right, drinking a ton of water, and exercising every single day..well in the past 2 months I have lost 16 lbs .

We've talked before. I'm a vegetarian. I don't eat cereal or meat. I do still have dairy products. I mainly ONLY drink water all day. We dont have dreamfields here. What can I get thats low carb to curve those cravings and shed pounds? I can deal without sugars and stuff. And good protien foods? What would be good ideas for bfast, lunch and dinner? THANKS!

You can get dreamfields online if thats at all possible for you. I dont know what your allowed to have as far as no meats..I know tofu is supposed to be a good opposite but Ive never tried it. Do you still eat eggs? For breakfast I usually have a protein shake or a south beach protein bar with milk, fruit is usually a snack 2-3 hours afterwards..for lunch I tend to make my meals heavy considering I'm on night shift right now and dont want to eat a heavy meal when I come home and go to bed. Do you eat fish or shrimp? I make tuna salad sometimes with low carb bread. Or have some shrimp with butter sauce. This is very difficult because you are a veggetarian, I tend to have meat with my meals. There are tasteless protein powders out in the market that you could buy and mix into foods so you get your extra protein you need. It seems like it would be hard not to eat a lot of carbs if your a vegetarian. Hmm..sorry I'm not much of a help on this topic. You could also make salad with mixed veggies, add some cottage cheese and almonds if you like that. I tend to love it..you can add some spices and make it taste wonderful, plus if you like tofu it could be added as well. I like asparagus with alfredo sauce. or even broccoli with alfredo sauce.

well for example today...i had a glass of milk, and a bowl of strawberries for breakfast. lifted hand weights. went to work from 12-9. got a veggie sub at subway and water. went to the grocery store. came home and ate a serving of veggie side pasta and more water. before i ate the pasta...i weighed myself and im now at 140, was at 142 this morning. i bought bananas, strawberries, whole wheat bagels, etc. 31% carbs, 59% fat, and 10% protien.

Thank you Aly for posting all of that helpful info! I'm trying to kickstart a plan for myself today and your post was the exact reminder I needed... lo-carb/high protein is the only way of eating that has worked for me in the past.

I know this and yet I let so many people convince me that other ways are better... those ways have gotten me fatter and fatter w/ even more cravings and hunger than ever.

Thank you again. I can't wait to start eating like this again today... or at least I'll be happy 3 days into it... that's about when my cravings go away... Yay!

You'll do great on low carb high protein, I agree that no matter how much people try and tell me carbs are good for me..it just doesnt work..If I dont cut carbs I dont lose weight..i stalled for soo long and I was losing so slow until I started cutting out bad carbs.

You can just google them or make your own low carb variations if you know how to do it right..you know what else is good with squash or zuccini? Take a pot boil the squash or zuccini with some onions and peppers if you like ..drain most of the water add some chopped up ham..can be lunchmeat if you like it thin..then add a stick or so of cream cheese to it(whole pot that is, less if the portion size is smaller) add some salt, pepper, seasonings you like and you have a delicious soup!
