I eat a lowcarb diet too. I lost 50lbs back in 2000, felt great but then 2004 rolled around, major stress issues arose and I started eating the carbs again, I gained 30lbs back and for the life of me I can't get it back off!

I have always enjoyed this way of eating. I feel full I feel good (after the initial carb withdrawals) I find it easy to eat out on this diet,,,but I am a stress eater and I have a large family with stress going on all the time and I eat,,,,

Now this being the end of the week is when I usually have gotten through the week on a very lowcarb diet, clothes fit loser and I am usually down 5lbs (I didn't weigh today) but then the weekend is here and almost every weekend I lose control and carb load, by Monday the 5lbs are back and I start again....so I am a bit anxious about this weekend. I want it to be the break in the cycle. I have meats, salads, eggs, and cheese readily available. I will try very hard to make it through the weekend. I've made it up to 3 weeks one month recently so we'll see how it goes. Hugs to you and prepare for the weekend.

I'm writing a journal here so I am going to add this too it...

Good luck to all the Lowcarbers out here!!

I know you can do it, I know is hard especially on the weekends! I usually just try and keep busy so i dont even think about junk, but its hard when there are parties and bbq's everywhere. Dont feel like you have to deprive yourself, just take it easy on the carbs. I always take the bun off of my burgers and hot dogs, and I try to stick to proteins like deviled eggs and chicken. My boyfriend is a complete junk fiend, I get so mad at him because he wants to eat all this crap and I dont..luckily he works every other weekend so i'm not as tempted to order pizza or crap. I know I feel much better on low carb, i just feel so much healthier..my fingers and face isnt puffy and I dont retain as much water. my skin is softer..its wierd how something so simple can effect us so much. A lot of people are against low carb because they say they cant stick to it..well I HAVE to! I dont want to get type 2 diabetes if I can help it..yes its still very possible I get it since it runs in the family, but even if I got self inflicted diabetes I would have to change my diet..so why not do it now and try my best to prevent it? Especially since losing weight is so much harder once you have diabetes.

Yeah I completely understand, back in July 08 I started phen and in the first three months I lost 26 lbs, I wasnt really happy because I saw plenty of ppl losing 20 lbs a month and werent nearly working as hard as I was. I stalled for about 2 months after those 3, 1 month (october) with phen and no loss, and another (November) without phen and found out I had high blood pressure, I started phen again at the end of november and lost about 5 lbs that week, but started crawling again with 1 or 2 lb losses like usual, but once christmas time rolled around I seemed stuck again and I was really cautious of what I ate and how much I exercised..I started low carb but not extreme low carb, just cutting out the bad carbs like pasta, white bread, and rice, and lost 6 lbs that week. One sign u might have if you cannot handle carbs: if you treat yourself to a small piece of chocolate, handfull of chips, or a slice of bread (like they say moderation right? well wrong!) instead of feeling like you had some and now your happy..you go on a complete carb binge...no amount of carbs suffices you..it only makes you hungrier for carbs..also if you eat any kind of carbs..whether its a couple of spoons of sugar in coffee..you want to go right to bed..if you have any of these symptoms you might want to let your doctor check you for insulin resistance.

Can you give me a sample of what you might eat in a day?
And how many calories do you think you are consuming on an average day, or do you even worry avbout that?
Thanks. I am determined to get this weight off.
Two of my girls are in Chile right now. One will be there for a total of 10months and the other is there visiting her right now, then will be home for 3 weeks and then off the Spain. They both will be home at Christmas time. I would love to have alost of this weight off by then.

I have used splenda for years. I rarely drink diet soda but I enjoy coffee/ w HWC and tea.

I usually eat hardboiled eggs for breakfast w/ bacon

Lunch during the week is almost always a baked chicken breast

Dinners are usually some sort of meat and I skip the sides I fix for my husband and have a salad

I LOVE avacodos, cucumbers, tomatoes so alot of times I will have one of those with my protein.

I have no bathroom problems with so little veggies, I think the fat takes care of that.

Late evenings are the worst time for me, my husband eats snacks every single night, candy bars, icecream, oreo cookies every night. Sometimes I have to get a piece of chicken or a cheese stick

But on the weekends,,,,everything changes my whole mentally about my diet changes,,it's like I think "I did so well all week a bite won't hurt" and I'm off on a binge.

I lose very very slow. The last time I was lowcarbing for 3 weeks, no falls, cheats or other wise, I get on the scale and it is a freak'n 5lbs!!! and I was walking!

Staying off the scale is a must for me. Monday will be my first week so I'll weigh in anticipation that I made it through the weekend and I am at my low (5lbs) instead of my high (5lbs) that I am usually at on a Monday....crazy right...then I will not get back on the scale again until I go for my next doctors visit on July 18th.

I dont worry about calories too much, I just make sure I eat enough, I dont lose when I eat too little. I usually have a protein shake, protien pie, protein bar, hard boiled egg, or any other kind of protein for breakfast, wait two or so hours and take my phen, 2 hours later I have a snack like an apple or strawberries. on occasion I will buy the low carb dannon light and fit yogurts, I have the choice of nuts, cottage cheese, sring cheese, slim jims, beef jerky, fruit, veggies, salad, as a snack..its whatever I want that day. Then for lunch I either make a tuna or meet and cheese sandwhich with low carb bread, or pbnj, or salad with chicken, for those weak or week days where I dont have time to make a lunch I grab the smart ones meals and make sure my protein in the food out numbers or matches at least 70/30/30..for dinner I will have a lean protein and some meat..like I mentioned before I have many different meals I make..I just cut out the carbs I dont need, and if I need a snack I will eat a sugar free popsicle or no sugar added fuge bar, protein pie, protein shake, or sugar free puddings and jellos. I dont count calories anymore..I realized I was becoming obsessed with numbers and it was causing me to stall..the more I stressed the less came off.

These are really good, realistic tips. Are there any GOOD (I mean don't taste like vomit) protein shakes? I am insulin resistant too (never been diagnosed and my blood glucose always comes back normal although I fit almost to a T the symptoms, then again some syndrome X'ers have normal blood glucose levels) although I do lose weight on low calories and not watching carbs, I am sure it would be better for me if I did watch my carbs.

Definitely gonna have to try some of the tips.

I like the eas soy protein shakes..I cant stand the ones that are pre-made and I dont mix them with water..but mil instead..I like the big red tubs of six star muscle protein shakes walmart sells too, but thats whey protein and soy protein is supposed to be better for women. With protein shakes it really is trial and error, I absolutely loved the herbal life protein shakes or meal shakes..so delish! My doctor wouldnt test me for it because the regular diabetes panel came out good, but I did a fasting blood test and with insulin resistance you are supposed to eat then get blood drawn..but nope..she thought maybe i needed to see a phsyciatrist..yeah military docs for ya lol.

Oh and I forgot to mention - I use splenda when I order a coffee from mcdonalds but thats usually only if I dont have my Truvia packets with me..comes from the Stevia plant, and tastes great without the harmful chemicals.

Grr! I know, my doctor told me the same thing! I feel like I am acting like a hypochondriac or something lol I have had numerous blood draws, and my glucose is completely within normal fasting ranges. I keep telling them to do the GTT and pull both the glucose AND insulin levels at the different intervals but they continue to tell me I would have to have shown odd glucose fasting levels.

I wanna yell "OMG, I KNOW MY GLUCOSE LEVELS ARE FINE BUT MY BODY IS PUSHING OUT MORE INSULIN THAN I NEED BECAUSE IT IS NOT AS EFFECTIVE AS IT SHOULD BE!!!!!" And where does excess insulin go? It stores as freakin' fat or comes out of your skin resulting in acanthosis nigricans, which is harmless but unsightly.

Insulin resistance ****s considering it's a precursor to diabetes but doctors don't see to really want to do anything about it. I mean my NP put me on Byetta and I lost weight automatically because my body wasn't putting out more insulin than it needed. It ****s that byetta does not have a generic yet because insurance requires step therapy to be on it now >.<

Yeah I know exactly how you feel, I was telling my doc how I was feeling tired after eating carbs and had horrible carb binges..all I wanted to do was sleep etc..and how I only lost weight if I was on phen, then I started low carb and weight was coming off..she wanted to send me to a phsyciatrist and see if I had a "mental" underlying problem keeping me from losing weight and being depressed..I was like ...I know why im depressed..its because I cant lose weight on my own! Type 2 diabetes runs in my family big time, my great grandmother died in her 50's because of it..and my grandmother who is 68 now can bairley walk anymore. The diabetes made her gain so much weight and she cant exercise or anything..you would think famil history alone would send a big news flash.

Can you eat broccoli on this? I didn't see broccoli listed....

Also, can you eat fat free cheese or 2% single cheese? What about crackers?
    Mayo?

Sorry, I am just trying to think what I usually eat in a day....never really low carbed before, but I do love those South beach diet chocolate protein meal bars.

Broccoli is highly recommended, most greens are..i dont think there is a green that you cant have. I love broccoli! I usually eat 2% cheese and milk..same thing with mayo. Im not a big cracker fan..although if they are in my house I would probably eat them lol. They are usually high in carbs, try wasa crackers instead if you want that extra crunch, they are much healthier. I dont worry about skim milks and cheeses because when your on low carb your body processes them easier, they contain a lot of protein..and that fat is healthy fat that your body uses..obviously low fat chips are a different story..thats saturated fat and none of its good to begin with lol

I am going to have to look for that low carb bread. I just know if I did atkins I would not last long. I tried it for a week, lost 7lbs then gained it all back by eating a small bowl of pasta.

That's why I like this idea. It's not super restricting, and you're not low carbing to the point you'll never be able to have a cookie or a piece of cake again, it just makes you a little more aware of bad carbs.

I am going to have to do this. I kind of do now, and when I do have carbs I always link with enough protein.

Exactly, I gave Taz, another member of the board this info and shes lost a ton of weight and so has her dad. They love it too because they dont restrict themselves, they eat in moderation, and feel so much healthier. I lost 4 lbs this week after being at a stand still for 2 or so weeks, just because I got back on the wagon after carb loading in Germany. There are a couple of low carb breads available, I dont recommend pepperage farm because its like they cut a slice of bread in half. I think the wonder bread tastes the absolute best and its not cracker thin. It has like 8 carbs per slice and like 3-4 grams of protein. much better than regular bread lol.

I eat very similar to this except more natural foods. And yet I always get slammed when I mentioned it.

You get slammed when you mention eating healthier? Doesnt make sense..but I know if I mention low carb most people go straight to thinking south beach or adkins..and think oh you will just gain it all back because maybe they have..but I try and tell people I am on no restrictive diet..im just smarted about my choices

Yeah, I stopped telling people I'm on Atkins because they think all kinds of untue things. Now I just tell folks I'm eating whole natural foods and I get better reactions (Although I'm still on Atkins. LOL)

Ah, I just bought a book on the glycemic index way of eating and this almost follows it completely. Dunno if that was already stated, but the book explains a lot about IR and PCOS (which most IR people have, or vice versa).

Wow, whats the name of the book, I might have to read it. But yeah I figured that the way I eat is a standard way for most ppl with IR, PCOS, or diabetes eat. I know that I dont miss all the junk that used to be in my diet, now I get more veggies and meats I was missing in my diet before.

Mind if I take a seat next to you on the Insulin Resistant bench? I've suffered from that for years.

I've been drinking a lot of protein shakes of late (Walmart Whey Protein and/or RTD 51g ready-made shakes) and I noticed yesterday my tongue was coated and lo and behold I got into major ketosis without even trying! Very surprising considering I've had white rice and such the past 24 hours!

So I guess I'll do the Atkins/low-carb thing for the next 3 days or so....that's usually how long it takes me to get bored with the diet.

It's called The Glucose Revolution, try to get the newest edition. They have other books dealing with syndrome x and PCOS.

Aww Bob, it ****s! lol I love my carbs....er, rather love to hate them, but the GI diet follows that not ALL carbs are bad for you, foods that are low on the GI don't cause such crazy spikes in insulin production and changes in blood sugar. Most of the foods they advocate eating are actually ones AlyKat listed.

So do you guys have any good ideas for low carb pancakes? Where can I find Atkins baking mix? They've sold a lot of their recipes to other companies because they declared bankrupcy in 07.

    Cottage Cheese Pancakes

3/4 cup almond flour (spooned and leveled)
    stevia or splenda to taste
    3/4 teaspoon baking powder
    1/4 teaspoon baking soda
    3/4 cup full-fat cottage cheese
    2/3 cup milk
    2 large eggs
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
    5 teaspoons coconut oil

    OREGONRENE'S "PANCAKES"
    2 egg yolks
    2 egg whites
    4 ounces cream cheese, softened

In a small bowl, beat the egg whites until soft peaks form. In another small bowl, beat the cream cheese and the yolks until well blended. Gently fold in the egg whites a little at a time. There's no need to be very careful when folding in the egg whites. I just sort of stirred them in gently with a rubber spatula.

Heat a little oil and butter in a nonstick skillet over medium-low heat. Don't let the butter get too dark. Ladle the batter into the hot oil, about one gravy ladle full for each. When well browned on the bottom, very carefully flip and cook the other side. They brown quite fast, so watch closely. Remove to a plate and keep warm. The pancakes are very puffy when first removed, but they flatten as they cool. Add more oil/butter to the pan for each batch, if necessary.

    Makes about 8-10 small pancakes
    Do not freeze

Per Serving: 69 Calories; 6g Fat; 3g Protein; .5g Carbohydrate; 0g Dietary Fiber; .5g Net Carbs

In a large bowl, stir together almond flour, sweetener, baking powder, and baking soda. Stir in cottage cheese, milk, eggs, and vanilla.
In a large nonstick skillet, heat 2 teaspoons coconut oil over medium. Working in batches, drop cottage cheese mixture by 1/4 cupfuls into pan (2 or 3 at a time).
Cook until bottoms are set and tops have small bubbles, about 1 minute. Turn pancakes and cook until just firm in the center, 1 to 3 minutes more. Repeat, using remaining 3 teaspoons oil for the other batches.

I am really glad that this post is still active after many months. I think it should stay up as often as possible to help those struggling with PCOS, Type 2 diabetes, as well as insulin resistance..or even those who dont struggle with these things but cannot handle carbs and are looking for a low carb plan they can stick with for the rest of thier lives.

I get pre made mixes of low carb pancakes at the store, that way I only have to use a scoop of pancake mix to make myself one with sugar free syrup. The mix is made by maple grove farms, I think they taste great, especially after sprinkling some stevia sugar and cinnamon over them. My boyfriend doesnt like the texture and then again he doesnt like anything that is low carb because he could care less. heres what it looks like:

What about milk? I still drink 100+ oz of water a day, but I also drink skim milk at night with dinner. I had a hysterrectomy about 8 years ago and they say once you have a hysterectomy you're more likely to have bone loss. Should I take a vitamin instead?

In my opinion, Skim milk is about the worse there is. Quite high in carbs and so processed there's nothing left. If you just like the taste of milk, I buy heavy cream and add water to it to make milk. But if it's just for the calcium a vitamin would do a lot better.
