Do whatever is easiest for you. Walk. . . run. . . walk and run. But in relation to burning calories. . it doesn't necessarily matter how fast you go. . . it's the distance you travel. You could walk 2 miles or run 2 miles. . . and you're going to burn virtually the same amount of calories.

G'day. I am from Australia too, but now living in the USA. Treadmills can get boring, and it is easy to give up. If you walk somewhere, then you have to keep going so you can get back home. If you are bored with your neighbourhood walk, then drive to the ocean, river, or somewhere new, and get out and walk there. Making it interesting makes you forget that you are actually exercising.
All the best with your quest

when I was working with a trainer and started on treadmill I was not able to run or jog. They had me walk at a fast walk pace and eventually increase to a jog even if only for 20 seconds and try to do that twice during the workout. Eventually I made it to 2 jogs for about 45 seconds (than my $$$ ran out and done with training and gym) So do whatever it is you can, but push yourself a little

either one is fine, just put it on a high incline and resistance and make it count!

Smile Welcome to the Phen site !
I tend to agree with everyone else, do what ever is best for you, but when you're doing

the treadmill, it's important for Cardio & weight loss to at least a minimum of 45

minutes or 1 hour. This will burn calories, but drink water to prevent dehydration

and a walkman or ipod makes the workout a little more enjoyable.

Personally, I do neither.
Instead, I stumble.
LOL
It throws off my sense of balance. The eliptical does the same thing. I get dizzy and can hardly stand within 2 minutes.
Personally, I say either way depending on your preferences. As for me, I think I'll stick with solid ground.

I'm a big fan of the treadmill. If you have access to a really good one (like at a gym), then it should have training programs already in it. My favorites are the "hills" programs. This morning I did hills for 60 minutes. The minimum inclie was 1.5 and the highest hills were an incline of 8. At the end of my 60 minutes I had walked 3.8 miles and (according to the treadmill) had burned 440 calories. The thing about a hills program is the incline goes way up and gets your heartrate up, then it goes back down and gives you a chance to recover before it goes up agin. I find that it keeps me from getting bored because it keeps changing. There is nothing more boring to me than doing the same speed and the same incline while looking at the same wall for an hour! Good luck to you!

I am doing this new program called the Couch to 5 K program. It is designed to help people who have never been runners, work their way up to running 3.2 miles in three months. I really like it because it is totally do-able, by alternating walking and jogging. Here is the link www.coolrunning.com
I have always been envious of people who can just go out and jog three miles. Hopefully when I am done with this program, I will be one of those people!

One more thing...

I was on You Tube today looking for something else and saw that they have some great instructional video about interval training on the treadmill. You might want to take a look at them.

Hey there...I am a fan of the treadmill...what I do is walk...but I start at a bout a 4 incline and end up at about a 10 incline...still walking...I also walk with two-four pound weights in each hand and do a series of exercises with them as I walk....(multi-tasking I guess you could say...haha)...its not about running vs walking...its about getting your heart rate in that fat burninh zone and keeping it there....how you do that is up to you....GOOD LUCK!!....adding the constant incline is a great workout for you all around...and keep challenging yourself too!
