That is such a sad story...Really hits close to home for me. I have HPV, and I didn't even know it...my dr's did. Apparently I got tested when I was 16 during a routine pap, without my knowledge. I had a few abnormal paps, and I told my doc I was concerned about it, she told me that I shouldn't really be surprised because it is normal for someone with HPV to get abnormal paps...WTF? But, I don't have HPV! I've never had worts! She looks at my chart and says that I was diagnosed with it years ago. REALLY? Nice to tell me NOW. For a few years they had me come in every 6 months to get this endoscopic test to see the abnormal cells on my cervix and take pictures of it. I guess one time it looked like everything was clear, so they stopped doing them altogether. This has been bothering my alot lately. This isn't something that just goes away. And paps aren't as accurate. I wonder if they just are trying to save money, ya know?

Then all these "one less" ads come on tv and make me feel like crap. I am happy that they are helping people to prevent it, but what if you already have it?? I feel like a ticking time bomb. And I do want more kids, or else I probably would just get a hysterectomy to prevent it now. yea.

Hopefully everyone will read this and inform themselves.

OK, Pixxi, you don't have very accurate information on HPV. There are over 16 different strains of HPV only 3 of them actually cause warts. Honestly over 75% of sexually active women are exposed to HPV at one time or another. It actually DOES go away on it's own 90% of the time within 2 years. Which means that while you'll test abnormal for a while, eventually you could have a normal pap again (not always though).

Most of us have been exposed to HPV at some point and most of us would test positive for being exposed to it. However, if what comes back on the pap is that the cells are simply abnormal and not low grade or worse high grade, most doctors take a "wait and see" approach, vs. doing invasive procedures such as LEEP or cryo.

Truly, it does go away on it's own fo rmost people, but yes, if you tested positive for HPV which means you tested positive for the potentially cancer causing hpv (which honestly is still only a slight chance you will get it) it's important to keep up on your yearly paps.

Honestly, it is better to have a doctor take a "wait and see" approach, and continue w/ your paps than it is to have them go in and start cutting, because that can potentially spread an illness that your body has mostly fought off.

Truly, most sexually active women have or have had HPV. And most men have been exposed to it too. But there's no real test for men even if they do go get an std test it's not part of the screening. Also, it's something that can be spread even with condom usage because it just takes contact to contact for it to spread. Ie, it doesn't require "penetration." Anyway, we do need to all stay active with our paps but please don't feel your doctor is shorting you or that you are in grave dangers, just stay up on your paps...

Best of luck,

Pixxi,

I went in for a routine exam 2 years ago. I volunteered to be in a study at the local university, they were taking samples from various patients and basically from what I was told perfecting their testing methods. I was surprised to get a call back informing me that I had HPV. I freaked out! I had just started dating my current boyfriend and I wasnt very informed about HPV and I felt horribly dirty and very embarassed that I could have given something to him. In fact, before we both did research together he felt resentful towards me.. at least that was how interpreted it. Everything turned out fine, I did have a LEEP procedure done and I actually did not have any abnormalities that they could see. They even explained to me that even though I did have the strain that causes cancer the reason it was such a surprise to them that I had it was I had never had an abnormal pap smear...this meant that it was dormant in my body and probably in the process of my body getting rid of it. I admit it definitely strikes a nerve in me when I see those commericals so you are not alone... I feel awful I was so close to being able to get a vaccine when it came out a year or so later!
But just remember so many people have it and like Thin4good said... you can get it even though you are safe and use a condom... it doesn't mean you were stupid and didn't use protection or anything like that... many people get it and it does go away over time! Keep your chin up... just because you have HPV doesnt mean it defines you!

Been there done that! I was diagnosed with HPV in 2002. Thanks to my lovely ex-husband! I got the strand that causes cancer. I was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2004. I had a cone biopsy in June of 2004 and they were able to remove all of the cancer. I have to get pap smears every 3 months for the next 6 years! YAY! So far so good. I have been cancer free since 2004. I never had warts. I never knew I had anything (no symptoms at all). It was discovered in a routine pap smear. If anyone ever has any questions about HPV, cone biopsies, culposcopies, etc., I am here with lots to say!

Cmarie...we must live parallel lives...
I was diagnosed with HPV in 2001 (Dec 23rd) because I had an outbreak!!
I was diagnosed with cervical cancer and underwent extreme treatment ... laser surgery to remove the warts, and a cone biopsy along with a LEEP in March 2002. All of this during my senior year of college.
I too, have a pap every 3 months...but this will end at the end of this year...then I will be back to 6 months.
I have been cancer free since March 2002 and have never had another outbreak.

Though it may be difficult to come to terms with now, like sens said...it doesn't "define" you....it just helps to make you more aware of your body...
At first I was embarassed, but I soon realized that damn near everyone has been exposed to the HPV virus, some are simply not educated about it....
It doesn't make me any different from anyone else....just a stronger person. I am now more aware of my body...and it has helped me to take better care of myself!! For example...I'm only 28 and already having mammograms!! I figure, breast cancer runs in my family, so it's better to be proactive instead of retroactive!!!!

Like Cmarie....I have tons of answers as well....heck, we can tag team!

I was diagnosed with HPV about 3 years ago, after I had 2 children. Now, this was a surprise because I was a virgin when I met my husband (although he was not!) We have been together for 20 years! I started to freak out thinking that he was cheating on me. My GYN assured me that I probably had the disease since we first bacame sexually active. But it stayed dormant for years. But, it was quite a shock. I am glad to hear the Cmarie and NYlady are cancer free! (But the way I LOVE your family picture NYlady!) Unfortunately the vaccine is too late for us, but it won't be too late for our daughters! And that I am thankful. Pixxi you are not alone!

I agree...I think the vaccine is a MUST for all teenage girls....especially before they become sexually active!! If we can prevent it, then we will!

(And thanks dancemom...luckily the kids are little hams and love getting their pictures taken...we found out that we are going to be on the next JCPenney Portrait Studio flyer! Wish we could benefit from the proceeds!!!!)

HPV is a VERY misunderstood STD. I'm not even clear on all aspects of it. However, men at this point CANNOT be tested for it unless they have visible signs (such as a strain that causes warts) but most strains DO NOT cause warts. Actually I was told by a doctor it is better to have a strain that causes warts because the chances of it being one of the strains that causes cervical cancer is highly unlikely.

I am always surprised to see how many women suffer from chronic STD's. HPV is like the common cold of the sex world, it's estimated by the time a women is 50 over 80% of women will have had some form of HPV whether it is one that goes away or goes into remission, etc. Herpes is the second common chronic STD with 1/4 women and I think 1/5 (or lately I have been reading 1/8) men being infected.

So really almost all the population has some form of chronic STD or will have a chronic STD in the future, but they're still so taboo and misunderstood because most people think you have to be slutty to get one. You can be choosy as hell with sex partners and STILL end up with an STD. They don't discriminate.
