You have to educate yourself, research and ask questions. It's a lot of work, but you should do this for anything you eat out. You should assume that all salads are unhealthy until proven otherwise... because most these days at restaurants, are. First, check the website and see if they have the nutrition information listed. Pay CLOSE attention to the serving size... many are more than 1 serving so you have to either eat only part of the salad, or multiply the nutritional data. Most of the dressings are loaded with fat and carbs... ask them to leave off cheese, croutons, etc. Don't get anything breaded or fried, or anything with chips, sour cream, corn, etc. You have to have a basic idea of what is good, and what is bad. Ask what they have for light dressings, not fat free, light. If they don't have light dressing you can get fat free, or just ask for oil and vinegar, or some lemon wedges. Get it on the side and dip your salad rather than putting it all over your salad.
Someone yesterday was going to get the grilled chicken caesar salad at chilis... it had over 1000 calories, over 70g of fat, and over 30g of carbs... that would be all I could eat for the day, and entirely too much fat. Some more examples of just the Chilis menu (they do not have a "healthy" salad on their menu)
Mesquite Chicken Salad (without the dressing)- 800 calories, 43g of fat, 53g of carbs
Cobb Salad (without the dressing)- 970 calories, 60g of fat, 56g of carbs
Quesadilla Explosion salad- 980 calories, 53g of fat, 78g of carbs
The healthiest salad they have is their house side salad... with 140 cals, 7g fat, 12g carbs... and that's without dressing as well. They have a lowfat vinaigrette which is the healthiest option. They have lowfat honey mustard and ranch, but they are both high in carbs.
So as you can see... just because it says salad, does not mean it's healthy. They don't have a healthy dinner salad on the menu. You would have to ask for those salads minus A LOT of the stuff on them, and get a vinaigrette dressing. You'd be better off ordering a piece of grilled chicken with a side of steamed veggies.
ASK for nutrional info, many places have it. Never guess or assume. Educate yourself about what is healthy and what isn't. Google the restaurant and see if there are links out there with healthy options. I try to stick with restaurants where I can choose something ahead of time...You generally can't go wrong with a grilled protein and steamed veggies, and most restaurants will accomodate you.
