i always heard the average woman in america wears a size 14. so, out of curiosity i googled to see what the stats are now. here's what i found....

The average American woman is 5'4", weighs 140 lbs, and wears a size 14 dress.

The "ideal" woman--portrayed by models, Miss America, Barbie dolls, and screen actresses--is 5'7", weighs 100 lbs, and wears a size 8.

One-third of all American women wear a size 16 or larger.

75% of American women are dissatisfied with their appearance.

50% of American women are on a diet at any one time.

Between 90% and 99% of reducing diets fail to produce permanent weight loss.

Two-thirds of dieters regain the weight within one year. Virtually all regain it within five years.

The diet industry (diet foods, diet programs, diet drugs, etc.) takes in over $40 billion each year, and is still growing.

Quick-weight-loss schemes are among the most common consumer frauds, and diet programs have the highest customer dissatisfaction of any service industry.

A recent survey found only 30 percent of 250 randomly chosen women age 21 to 35 had normal bone mass--the researchers concluded women are so afraid eating dairy products will make them gain weight that they are starving themselves into osteoporosis.

Young girls are more afraid of becoming fat than they are of nuclear war, cancer, or losing their parents.
50% of 9-year-old girls and 80% of 10-year-old girls have dieted.

90% of high school junior and senior women diet regularly, even though only between 10% and 15% are over the weight recommended by the standard height-weight charts.

1% of teenage girls, and 5% of college-age women become anorexic or bulimic.

Anorexia has the highest mortality rate (up to 20%) of any psychiatric diagnosis.

Girls develop eating and self-image problems before drug or alcohol problems; there are drug and alcohol programs in almost every school, but no eating disorder programs.

I'm between a size 12 and 14 now and I am def not 140 lbs......LOL!

Interesting stats! The scary part to me is how most people gain the weight back within 5 years! I hope not!!!

that's what i was thinking too..when i was 187 i could fit into some size 14 stuff..40lbs lighter & i'd still b the same size? whoever does these stats obviously have no clue about women's clothing sizes.

i dont get how 140 lbs equals a size 14 dress.....i guess that should make me feel better, cause i'm around 140 but wear smaller than a 14.

i know, i found the 140 lb. with size 14 dress interesting, too. cus right now i'm floating around 170 and i wear a size 14. but at 140 (which i haven't seen in FOREVER) i was much SMALLER than a size 14. but then again.....aren't dress sizes different than pants sizes?

Yeah, dress sizes run larger. A woman I work with weighs 152...she's 5'5...and is shopping for wedding dresses and she's constantly having the staff tell her apologetically that she's in a size 12 dress. She wears a 6-8 in pants and has the tiniest waist since having a tummy tuck.

She lost over 100 pounds and looks great.

i know! 3/4 gain it back within one year?! that means 3 out of 4 of us will have all of our fat back next year! aaaahh!! just kidding. we are the exceptions to the rule! yeah......

wedding gowns run different for sure. when i got married I was a size four in regular clothes, 125 lbs....my wedding gown was a size ten.

I can wear anyting from a 6 to a 10 now at 140 lbs...but not a 14......

higher end clothing tends to run smaller too i notice.

Yeah dress sizes are much bigger...
For my wedding i weighed about 140 and was wearing size 6 or 8 and my wedding dress was a 12
but that is probably mostly because i am busty.

For my wedding i weighed about 140 and was wearing size 6 or 8 and my wedding dress was a 12 but that is probably mostly because i am busty. Mother to a one year old active boy MAY 2nd- 194 lbs started PHEN 9th- 188 lbs 25th- 186 lbs JUNE 13th- 186 lbs 20th- 182 lbs
