Green Tea Extract Increases Metabolism, May Aid in Weight Loss
From Mary Shomon,
There are two ways to lose weight -- either reduce energy intake, or increase energy expenditure. Because hypothyroidism -- even after treatment -- may reduce energy expenditure in some people, patients naturally are looking for options that can help safely help raise the metabolism.
In a study reported on in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, it was found that green tea extract resulted in a significant increase in energy expenditure (a measure of metabolism), plus also had a significant effect on fat oxidation. While some of the effects were originally theorized to be due to the caffeine content of green tea, the researchers discovered that the tea actually has properties that go beyond those that would be explained by the caffeine. The same amount of caffeine as was in the green tea, administered alone, failed to change energy expenditure in other studies. This led reseachers to believe that there is some interaction going on with the active ingredients of green tea that promotes increased metabolism and fat oxidation.
The researchers indicated that their findings have substantial implications for weight control. A 4% overall increase in 24-hour energy expenditure was attributed to the green tea extract, however, the research found that the extra expenditure took place during the daytime. This led them to conclude that, since thermogenesis (the body's own rate of burning calories) contributes 8-10% of daily energy expenditure in a typical cubject, that this 4% overall increase in energy expenditure due to the green tea actually translated to a 35-43% increase in daytime thermogenesis.
Of critical importance to thyroid patients is the fact that none of the research subjects reported any side effects, and no significant differences in heart rates were noticed. In this respect, green tea extract is different from some of the prescription drugs for obesity, and herbal products like ephedra, which can raise heart rates and blood pressure, and are not recommended for many individuals, in particular, those with thyroid disease who may be particularly sensitive to stimulants.
Implications for You?
If you were to incorporate green tea into your weight loss efforts, how is the best way to go about it?
One way would be to choose a reputable brand of organic green tea at a health food store or natural grocery, and start by taking a cup of tea every day. You can also take a green tea extract, in the form of a supplement.
Either way, says dietitian Lynn Moss, M.S., R.D., a continuing education specialist for Pharmavite, makers of Nature Made and Nature's Resource supplements and herbs, you should definitely take the green tea with meals, to reproduce the study's conditions as much as possible.
Moss also feels that green tea may be a good choice for thyroid patients because, unlike caffeine, " green tea has the potential to accelerate metabolism -- which can help weight loss slightly -- without overstimulating your adrenal glands."
And even a small effect can go a long way, when you are dealing with a metabolism that may not rebound entirely, despite hypothyroidism treatment.
SPECIAL NOTE: Is Green Tea Dangerous to the Thyroid?
In response to my article, some readers expressed concerns regarding the high fluoride content in tea, and the negative relationship between ingestion of too much fluoride and thyroid problems, as well as other health concerns.
This is definitely something to be considered before deciding to take green tea.
While green tea has some definite benefits in the cancer-prevention and metabolism-boosting arena, the fluoride content may, according to some practitioners, be a concern for the public in general, but specifically for thyroid patients.
Weightloss success depends on changing eating habits (most regain the weight if we return to our previous lifestyle). Eat like the food pyramid. Lots of dark/colorful veggies & fruits; lean proteins (chicken, skim milk, fish); modest amounts of seeds/nuts & whole grains; start walking and do some resistance exercises to build muscle. Good luck!

sooo
what you are saying is that it doesnt matter if I get get caffenited or decaf tea?
What is tea extract?
Does it come in a liquid form? Does it contain caffine?
Thanks!!
Sorry to quote reference material, but it is better than relying on uninformed opinions , Melissa. Anyway:
"One study examined this theory, and the effect of green tea extract on 24-hour energy expenditure, in 10 healthy men – who each consumed 3 treatments of green tea extract (50mg caffeine and 90mg epigallocatechin gallate), caffeine (50 mg), and placebo (at breakfast, lunch, and dinner). The results of the study showed that, relative to placebo, the green tea extract resulted in a significant (4%) increase in 24-hour energy expenditure (approximately 800 calories per day) and a significant increase in the body’s use of fat as an energy source (24-h Respiratory Quotient). In addition, the 24-hour urinary norepinephrine excretion was 40% higher during treatment with the green tea extract than with the placebo. It is interesting to note that treatment with caffeine in amounts equivalent to those found in the green tea extract (50mg) had no effect on energy expenditure of fat oxidation – suggesting that the thermogenic properties of green tea it due to compounds other than its caffeine content alone."
So it seems that the caffeine is not an essential part of the fat-burning or health aspects of green tea. If you want to bore yourself, here is a detailed link: http://www.supplementwatch.com/supli...asp?DocId=1153
Also, the extract seems to come in many forms. What you want is up to you. I buy online at iherb (they are big & have good prices). But you can google on this and lots of retailers will pop up.
If there is anything else I can assist with, just ask.
Blessings to you,
Ross

Thank you Ross!
You are always so helpful!
And you can never bore me with information.
Information is power!
So thank you!

Good people deserve good information
We are all rooting for you. I am eyeballing the green tea extract myself to help reach "goal."
However, if it is truly thermogenic, I would shy away from longterm "health" use. [It seems to have the opposite effect to "calorie restriction", the only known scientific method that extends the lifespan of animals & probably humans.] I would wonder whether something that INCREASES the metabolism might REDUCE lifespan!!!!
Actually, my major passion is taking "resveratrol." This is the most active ingredient in red wine that seems to explains its health benefits. Within the next few years, EVERYONE will probably be taking it. They just had a news story a few days ago about amazing effects on older mice (but I have been following it for about a year). People who take it seem to ling longerm and have much fewer problems with cancer, heart problems, viruses and other things...

Hi Ross
Yes I saw that on the news--where can I buy some?
I would like to buy some for my parents--is it effective on older people?
They are already in thier early 60s?
I drink 2-4 glasses of pinot noir a night--is that the same thing! =)
Hi, Melissa.
Pinot Noir was the red wine with the strongest amount of resveratrol. Unforunately, I do not like alcohol, so I purchased a powdered form.
The highest levels of resveratrol were generally found in Pinot Noir from the New York area, rather than Calif or France.
Keep in mind, there is still a lot we don't know. Scientists are arguing over lots of things (it is early in our understanding). If you type in resveratrol into google, you will pop up some supplements with resveratrol. Some major vendors will appear in the blue area - The one beginning "Long" seems interesting (trying not to plug anyone here - I have never used these supplements).
It is probably very important to combine resveratrol with quercitin and probably lecithin (usually included in those supplements anyway). Resveratrol is very quickly broken down, and those two seem to extend its presence in the body. Besides, both of these others have strong health benefits on their own (quercitin is already in red wine). If pinot noiring, probably better to take small sips several times throughout the day, rather than all in the evening.
But I can tell you this, in one large study I saw, those who had high levels of resveratrol had a 40% lower death rate from EVERYTHING. Resveratrol seems to slow the aging process, but the exact mechanisms are still being debated.
For what its worth, I bought a 50g bag of powdered resveratrol from an Arizona business online (most resveratrol comes from "knotweed" rather than much more expensive wine). I add it to fruit drink. 50g will last for YEARS, since you usually only take it at about 20mg or so at a time. This is the exact link in his site (if it is blocked, I will send via private message):
http://www.shfnatural.com/Merchant2/...Category_Code=
It seems expensive, but when you consider $65 for something that will last for years, vs. supplements at $60 a month, i think you will understand. You should also order quercitin from him, as I said before. http://www.shfnatural.com/Merchant2/...Category_Code=
Remember, you only need tiny bits of this. I add a little sprinkle into a jar of grape juice or something, and take a few sips twice a day, over the course of a couple weeks (keep the unused powder very dry). This is more than heavy red wine drinkers get, so it is enough.
I hope this helps
Blessings to you,
Ross

heh, sounds good.... but I think I' rather have wine![]()
Ha
Yeah I do love my wine
It's probably why I am having trouble losing =(
i WISH i didn't detest the taste of alcohol. I bought a bottle of Pinot Noir - tasted it and gave it away. Later, I bought a bottle of dealcoholized red wine - tasted it and gave THAT away.
I give up on trying. Its the powders for me![]()
I agree that red wine is a better path for resveratrol/health benefits. Of course, alcoholic drinks tend to be fattenening, so - "you pick your poison" I would rather get the excess calories from desserts!!!

You can usually get it at the local pharmacy. I get mine in capsule form and it's powdery greenish.
aries
if you mean resveratrol, yes it is a dull greenish. Most resv comes from knotweed now. Which pharmacy did you see it? I looked all over for resv, but no one carried it.

Ross,
I picked mine up at Walgreens. I just figured it was what all green tea extract capsules looked like. Since when I brew my green tea it has a greenish tint to it and basically the powder in the capsules look like the substance of what's in the green tea bags.
The brand I bought was Natures Bounty, they were on sale at Walgreens and am not sure if they still are, it was buy one get one free so I somewhat stocked up.
Could you tell me the difference in green tea extract capsules?
I just bought green tea extract (there is no walgreens around me - just the big Wal!!)
It is a softgel, and of course, they claim it is better than everything else...
each is 400mg & i just started taking two each morning. We will see...

Has anyone used a detoxification product while using phentermine? I purchased the Colpurin Internal Cleanse and Body Purifier and am not sure it is safe to use them at the same time.
I am sure this is not popular, but frankly, the whole "Cleanse" & "detoxification" of the body is unnecessary. And sometimes it causes medical problems.
For example colon-wise, the GI tract sheds its entire internal lining every 3 days, and there is no such thing as "pounds of impacted or putrefied waste in your body that can be eliminated from the body." The body does a superb job of cleansing itself.
Same for liver or kidneys. They don't need help.
Besides at times causing health problems, there is no evidence that fasting, cleansing or detoxing the body has any health benefits.
I only rant against this, because this whole industry is a sham played against people to convince them of something that has no need, purpose or value. Rather than studies, there is an endless supply of "testimonials."
I only wish people trying to detox their bodies, would realize the major problems America faces, is cramming so much processed & junk foods and desserts into our mouths, and shunning the healthy stuff, that we are our own worst enemies. I got here because I am in love with donuts, cookies, chocolate, and pizza. But I am working hard to eat right... >![]()

Ross,
Which would you prefer, the softgel of the powder form capsules? I never knew there was a softgel form of green tea til someone mentioned it and think I may have seen in on the shelves recently. I've only seen the powder green form and that's what I purchased.
Also from your previous posts which is a concern to me is the mention of thyroid problems with long use of green tea extract capsules. Would it be the same if someone were to just drink green tea as I know a lot of individuals that easily have 2-3 cups/day.
Hi Ross,
I too am intereested in adding green tea to my daily routine. And like Aries, I want to know if you prefer the softgel or the powder form? Do you know which form is more beneficial? Or which works better? Any info would be great. Thanks!
10/24/06 SW = 174 (started Phen)
11/03/06 CW = 163 (lost 11 lbs)
11/18/06 = 158 (1st f/u visit w/ Dr. - lost total 16 lbs in 25 days)
12/26/06 = 146 (lost 12 lbs in 38 days)
total weight loss to date = 28 lbs
The only difference I have seen between softgel vs. capsule, is it is supposed to get into your body a little faster. (I did review of some online sites)
But frankly, the same amount gets into your body, eventually, so the longterm diff is probably meaningless.
I would say to buy what is easily available. Make sure you pay attention to the milligrams. They seem to vary widely. Mine seemed expensive, but it was a much higher dose, so evens out...

Is anyone just taking CLA and Green tea? If so, have you seen any results with that? I will like to take a break from Phen and just take that if it works.
Can anybody tell me what CLA is, please.
Also, I drink green tea every morning at my office, but I do not know how the tea bags compare to the extract. Any ideas, suggestions??
Thank you
Ross... is there a particular brand that works better??
I actually stopped taking phen about a week ago and just stuck with the CLA+Green Tea. I haven't experienced any weight gain, but I definitely have more of an appetite. I wanted to take a break from the phen, my mouth was so dry I was literally heaving.Originally posted by OmoNaija:
