Thread: cracking knees during exercise-HELP!

    Question

    My knees just pop and grind during exercise like you wouldn't believe. I mainly do the elliptical and then when i do my squats. I CANNOT do lunges-no way now how!
    It doesn't hurt my knees when i exercise and it doesn't hurt afterwards either.
    Am i hurting my knees? Like deep down inside? Will i regret this when i'm 50??

    LOL~ I've always wondered too. My knees have always popped. I sound like rice crispy cereal when I exercise...snap, crackle, pop!

    I don't think so....you are doing your knees a FAVOR by getting weight off them....you might want to add a glucosomine and MSM supplement.

    the ellip. is easy on your knees compared to running and lunges....

    My knees are 49...and I don't have any problems as long as I don't overdo it.

    LOL@ Southern!

    I always have to turn the volume way up on the TV so i won't hear my knees. LOL When i hear that grinding it just goes right thru me and makes me cringe.

    Yea, the elliptical is easy on the knees but i still hear the grinding....eewww!

    Hi!

    Ok, if you remember a couple weeks ago, I said that I was returning my new elliptical machine? Well, it was DUE to my knees cracking, popping and strange noises I never heard before! It actually scared me to death! I never had this until I bought that Elliptical. (aka: the death machine) lol The next day, we went out and bought a good Recumbent Bike and I've never had or heard that popping noise again! Now, the interesting part of all this was after using the Elliptical and my knees were sounding awful. I thought I permanently damaged them. I consulted with my Orthopedic Surgeon about this right before buying my new Recumbent Bike. He told me that the Elliptical Machines are NOT Non-Impact and can cause much stress to your knees. He told me that if I heard those noises coming from my knees while or after using it, to get rid of it! He's actually had patients come in with knee injuries from using an Elliptical! I love my Treadmill & Bike. I do an hour a day, 7 days a week and never have any pain or noises! lol Don't ignore those noises guys, please be careful! Don't believe everything you read about those Ellipticals.

    Well~ mine pop when I walk too~ not every step, but often enough. I've just gotten used to it. My mama is the same way.

    Mine do that all the time, it's embarrassing but not harmful if if doesn't hurt. I worked with an Ortho doc once and asked him about it and he said as long as there isn't any pain you're knees are fine.

    Heartland your knees sound like mine! Its so embarrasing at the gym if the music is not up and Im doing the machines and someone is beside me.lol I asked my Dr and he said everything looked fine.Well it sure as he!! doesnt sound like it!!lol Me and lunges have a hard time too-I try to a few but gotta have something LOUD going in the back ground.

    As far as the elliptical-I have no problems at all.I also have the recubant bike and no probs there either.

    Happy poppping heartland! I guess we gotta live with it

    Try taking a stack of shark cartilage and glucosamine chondroitin. That should do the trick. You may want to add flax seed, too.

    My knee (just the left one ???) crackles. Walking up stairs and when I was doing the firm workout and had to step on the higher step, it crackled. I think it has on the elliptical a few times but not much. Doesn't hurt. Just annoying. I asked my doc about it and she didn't seem concerned. I have a different doc now so I'll mention it to her at my next appointment.
