Sorry ladies...I started going grey at 14. I have been silver (under the dye) since I was in my early 20's just like my dad. I have looked and tried a lot of different things. Here's some information on why your hair turns grey....I will also say that I found it interesting that while I used to tan, I now do not...I only burn. Here's the info.
(*)
The root of every strand of hair is surrounded by a tube of tissue under the skin that is called the hair follicle (say: fah-lih-kul). Each hair follicle contains a certain number of pigment cells. These pigment cells continuously produce a chemical called melanin (say: meh-luh-nin) that gives the growing shaft of hair its color of brown, blonde, red, and anything in between.
Melanin is the same stuff that makes our skin's color fair or darker. It also helps determine whether a person will burn or tan in the sun. The dark or light color of someone's hair depends on how much melanin each hair contains.
As we get older, the pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die. When there are fewer pigment cells in a hair follicle, that strand of hair will no longer contain as much melanin and will become a more transparent color - like gray, silver, or white - as it grows. As people continue to get older, fewer pigment cells will be around to produce melanin. Eventually, the hair will look completely gray.
People can get gray hair at any age. Some people go gray at a young age - as early as when they are in high school or college - whereas others may be in their 30s or 40s before they see that first gray hair. How early we get gray hair is determined by our genes. This means that most of us will start having gray hairs around the same age that our parents or grandparents first did.
I started going gray when I was 16. I am now 39. I started dying the gray at 16 and did so up until about 3 years ago. I just got tired of it and decided to let it grow out. It was horrible as it was growing out. My hair is mid way down my back and probably about 80% silver. I get more compliments on my hair when I go in public. Complete strangers will ask me who frosts my hair, I just laugh and say God does it.
Donna... Other than my dad I never knew another person who went grey like me as a teen. I do remember growing up though ..my dad had black hair that turned silver ....women would approach him all the time about his hair. I am sick of dying my hair as well...but not ready to quit quite yet.
I went gray when i was in my teens, I think around 16. I thought it was because of the extreme stress I was going through with my bf in the gulf on the front lines and my parents splitting up. Guess I was wrong!! So, I dye it and my color of choice is red. I vary from a deep orange red to a lighter orange red. Depends on my mood. My hair also grows very fast and my roots show within 2 weeks of coloring. It ****s royally!! But, I try and wait until 5 weeks is up before coloring again.
I did 6 weeks...then five.....I'm at 4 now but it really is ready at 2 weeks. It doesn't look so bd if I get it weaved with a lighter color...it's not so obvious that I have a skunk line. I spend quite a bit to go have it done and I hate that. I've tried a couple of the brush on root cover temporary color things but only if I'm going somewhere where I care that much. I think it looks fake when I do that...it's dulling.
I am one of the self-proclaimed vitamin freaks!! I admit it! The only vitamin that I have found that treats gray hair is Vitamin R (Redken!). Unfortunately, like you all said, loss of melanin is genetically determined. However, lack of copper and zinc in the diet can speed up the process. I tend to use highlights as the color seems to blend and hold better and longer so that I can go every 5 weeks or so. When I don't have highlights I am in there receiving my Vitamin R treatment every 3-4 weeks!
