I have hypothyroidism. I gained 100 pounds with the disease before I was able to start losing weight. Getting my thyroid working properly only stopped me from gaining more - it was up to me to lose the weight. I find that the more I excercise the easier it is to lose weight and keep my thyroid levels where they shoudl be.

I have hypo also. I have gained 100lbs in the last 2 1/2 years. I just want to be below 2 also!! None of my doctors have done squat to help with this issue. They don't seemed to be fazed that this is abnormal to put weight on this fast???????? And they tell me that maybe I am depressed, well hell yes I am, I am too embarassed to even go to a gym and work out. I don't think people even recognize me?!!

I started Phen ten days ago, don't have a scale, but feel my pants are a bit(not much) looser. I hardly eat though. I am in a money rut right now and hardly ever have food in the fridge, so it's easier to go without cuz I am not hungry. I know this is not so good, and pry why I am not noticing a HUGE weightloss?!

I drink AT LEAST a gallon of water a day.

Yup, I'm in the club! Hashimoto's hypo... I'm on 100mcg of synthroid, I've been stable for the last 3 months or so.
I gained 50 pounds with this issue. Roughly half before diagnosis and the other half within the first 3 months after diagnosis.
But honestly... I don't think it is harder to lose weight with Hashi's so long as your numbers are right.
I'm afraid this will be an unpopular thing to say, but remember, this is just my opinion.
As long as your hormones are stable, medical science says that we have a NORMAL metabolism. Yes, when our numbers were off, we gained a lot of weight, our metabolism was suppressed and we all gained more weight than we are used to. But once our numbers are correct, we have a metabolism just like anyone else. It is hard for everybody to lose weight, it is a harsh reality...
But to say that it is harder for us to lose weight (while all medical/scientific evidence argues to the contrary) is not a healthy attitude. For one thing, it takes away from the accomplishments that people without thyroid condidtions have made.
Secondly, it is a kind of victim mentality that will not serve you well. Even IF it is harder for us to lose weight, it serves no purpose to compare ourselves with other people. Just like I can complain forever that men have a faster metabolism that women... that truth is not going to get me where I want to be. We all have to play with the cards that we are dealt.
I challenge all of you to record EVERY bite that goes into your mouth for the next 30 days. That means using measuring cups! I did it for 3 months. I found that I burn about 2200 calories per day. I determined this by counting every calorie I put in my mouth verses how much weight I lost...
2200 calories per day is really not bad considering I am 5'3" and my weight ranged between 157 to 130lbs. And I don't workout at all!
Please don't take this the wrong way. Depression is understandable and actually a symptom of hypothyroidism. It is very important to get out numbers in the proper range. But once our hormones are balanced, it's time to **** it up and do some hardcore damage control. Believing, in contradiction of scientific evidence, that it is for some reason harder for us to lose weight, is not the attitude that is going to help you get it done!
That's my 2 cents. Just my opinion...

I should add, I've been losing weight, slowly but surely, since last August. The first time my numbers ever came back normal was this March. So it is possible to lose weight, even if your numbers are off. It is hard, very hard... but you can do it if you make the commitment to yourself.
You just have to decide what is important.

I have a pitutary tumor that affects my thyroid among other glands/hormones. I too have found it harder to lose weight, but it can be done. Sometimes believing that we will not be able to lose the weight due to our condition is placebo effect enough to prevent weight loss. Just look at it as if you have to work harder than others to get where you want to be. Keep a food/exercise journal, and drink lots and lots of water. Although it is hard, this is doable. Good luck.

I am in the same boat as Candy with the Hashimotos. But when i went to a specialist it took 6 months to get it right and I have a nodule on my thyroid. But My numbers are normal so It is my own fault i haven't lost. Also Thyroid disease and depression mirror each others. So people confuse them. Normal range for thyroid is .3-6 so it is a big range, just cause you are " normal" doesn't mean the level is right for you. My dr. looked at alot of facts to get me to the right level for me. I am now supposed to be on the lower end of it. Specialist are all good. Also read from a endocronoligist site.

I also have a low thyroid. I take 60 mg of Armour each day.

Here a couple of tips from my doctor:

1. Take your thyroid at the same time every day.
I take mine twice a day, once at 7 AM (Same time as Phen) and the other at 2 PM. I always try to take it exactly at those times.

2. Let your body be your key.
I can tell by the way I feel, swelling and such if I am high, low etc. I used to take Synthroid and noticed my enengy was really low, so my doctor recommended the natural thyroid, armour. (I am not saying anything bad about either medicine, it's just what works best for your body). If I have symptoms for more than a week, I go back to the doc and have my levels checked and after 5 years I am really good at knowing my own body.
I also had a hysterectomy 1 year ago. So I am also on hormone replacement therapy. That is also very difficult to balance. But, I try to read as much as I can get my hands on about HRT and listen to my body.
Also, in your food journal that Candy Lane talks about (great idea). Write in extra stuff for your doctor, such as low energy today, headaches, swelling, depressed, exercise routine. All of this things will be very helpful to your doctor and could show a pattern for yourself. Some of your things could be related to PMS or environmental factors.
Overall, I find it has always been tougher for myself to loose weight than some people. But I try to keep that in mind and I think it pushes me even more to succeed.
Keep with it - This will all be worth it.

Wow candy lane you sound just like the doctors I have been too. And I dont mean that in a bad way. I think thyroid problems affect everyone differently and it does prove difficult for others because maybe it is difficult to change their ways. Especially me. So Im just hoping the phen gives me the boost I need.

I agree w/ you candy sooo much! I once had my numbers in line & my metablism was so awesome! I lost 40lbs so easy(well, dieting/exercise) & it melted off! But my numbers got back off & while I was still on the exact same diet I started GAINING weight back! Its crazy. My numbers are off right now & thats why its a rough road, but Im making it! 10 lbs! woo hoo! But I think when our metabolisms ARE in line, we may just have faster ones! LOL! Good luck ladies! WE WILL DO THIS!
