I have recently been diagnosed with PCOS. I have gained about 30 pounds in the last year. Weight gain is a major symptom of PCOS as well as it being very difficult to lose weight. Has anyone here been diagnosed with PCOS (or any other weight loss hinderance) and taken Phentermine and had positive results? TIA for any feedback!

Hi Sassygal, I was diagnosed with PCOS. Yes its really hard to lose weight, but since I have been on Phentermine I have been losing weight at about 2 pounds a week. Good luck in your weight loss.

Sassygal, I to have PCOS. I haven't really noticed that it is hard to lose the weight with phen, but without it, I couldn't do it, I always gained weight, no matter how little I ate or how much I excercised. I am happy to say that I have not had any Cysts in 2 years, but before that I had them 4 times in one year, and everytime they ruptured...talk about PAIN! I know that's probably TMI (sorry) but this PCOS is not only discouraging in the weight loss form but also the fertility. I have a 7 year old son, but now that I am married, I really want another baby, and it is just NOT working, we have been trying for a year and NOTHING! Not even with Clomid. So I say maybe adoption. I know that was OT, but it sure felt good to get that frustration out. Thanks!!!

Shirlyb and justfluffy thank you sooo much for responding to me!!! I really needed some insight as to how to go about this. The weight gain has been very hard and i'm at my wits end. Did either one of you go to the doctor or just order online? Just curious? My doctor isn't concerned with my weight gain but I sure am!

Thanks again! Congras on your weight losses!!

Sassy- I went to the Doctor and got my pills. I thought it might motivate me a little more since I have to go every month for a weigh in and refill. He also put me on a 1200 calorie a day diet which I thought would be hard, but it really isn't. I eat lower sugar apple cinnamon oatmeal for breakfast 150 calories, a slimfast shake for lunch 180 calories, then usually an orange for snack (it helps get rid of water weight) and then I eat whatever I fix the family for supper only about half as much as I used to and it seems to be working fine Oh Yeah, drink LOTS of water, he told me at least 64 ounces a day, I think I drink about 80-90 ounces a day because of the cotton mouth, I am always thirsty. Hope this helps or at least gives you some ideas.

JustFluffy, keep trying to get pregnant. I was on clomid after my 3rd couldn't get pregnant. After giving up clomid and trying. I lost a little weight and lo and behold I got pregnant. So theres still hope, just might not happen straight away but it will happen.

Justfluffy-
I read your post about the clomid not working and wanted to tell you that I have PCOS also and had been trying to get pregnant since 1999. I was on clomid off and on for 6 months with it not working (ovulation would not even start to occur until 34th cycle day or later) so I finally started follistim injections and after just one round with them in June of 2001 I was pregnant. My little boy was delivered in March of 2002!!! Then in April of 2003 I worked hard on losing weight again, watched my blood sugar consistently and lost 34 lbs on my own from working out 3 times a week and watching what I ate, and in March of 2004 we decided to try again for a fourth baby without fertility treatments (I had been cyst free for a good 6 months) and we got pregnant the first try!! Our fourth son was born November 2004!!! We have been sooo blessed! Now unfortunately I can tell my PCOS is starting to come back with a vengence, I have had 3 bad cysts since having the baby, my facial hair is getting bad and hair loss is starting again. Normally after having a baby you go into remission, but I guess that isn't happening for me this time. Anyway I just wanted to let you know that pregnancy is possible, don't give up!! Ask your doc about the follistim, I know if you don't have insurance that covers infertility the injections can be costly, thankfully our insurance was really good and covered it well. (without insurance our 3 year old would have cost us over $25,000.00) for the two years of fertility treatments!! Can you believe it!! LOL we joke all the time that when he askes for money for college we will give him those bills and tell him his college money was spent on concieving him!!!!!! I am sure he wouldn't appreciate hearing that though!!!! Good luck! If you ever want to talk and vent pm me I truly know how it feels!!

JustFluffy, Sassy,and everyone else,
First let me say Thank you! It's so nice to know I am not going through this alone. I also was diagnosed with PCOS and have been trying to get pregnant for almost 2 years now. My cycles are really long and annovulatory. I have been on 1500 of Metformin for about 6 months, but I didn't notice a change in my cycles or weight loss till I hit the 17 pound loss mark. I have lost 21 pounds total. Since the weight loss I have had the most normal cycles I have ever had !!! The first one was a whopping 29 days and the next two have been 29 and 30 days. It is pretty amazing to me that only a 20 pounds loss can make such a difference. I was also on clomid for 4 months with no pregnancy. I am thinking of giving it one more try since I have lost the weight, but I want to lose a few more pounds still. It's so nice to know I'm not alone in this. I feel so alone and defective when it comes to having a baby. Sorry if I got OT. I just had to answer this post when I saw it, cause it was ME!!

I am glad that I am not alone in this. Not glad that you girls have the same problem, but it's nice to know that there is someone who understands this sort of thing. Hopefully once I lose the weight I won't have any problem conceiving. Right now my cycles are 35-40 days long! So needless to say, every month when one of them happens to be a little longer, there is a little sparke of hope that "just maybe" and then a few days later....disappointment. This is so OT but it's good to talk about the frusteration, anger, hurt, and disappointment that go with PCOS. You know what I really HATE? It's when someone says to me "When are you going to have a baby?" or "what are you waiting for?" I feel like punching them in the mouth! If they only knew.....
