DO NOT TAKE PHEN AND BREASTFEED!!!

Everything you take and everything that you eat goes to the baby!!! You don't want this to go to the baby!! Baby's need lots of milk to grow and be strong. If you take this and breastfeed the baby won't be crying to be fed because it won't be hungry.

PLEASE please don't do that!!!

Wean the baby first before you take phen.

Crazee is right, do NOT breastfeed while on phen! How old is your little one? I know you are anxious to start getting the weight off, but your babys health is more important right now! If you do want to start phen, you should either wean gradually, so it's not a shock for baby, or switch to formula (again, gradually... weaning or switching should take a week or 2 at least, unless an emergency situation). I know it seems like it may take forever, but it WILL happen. My youngest had weaned herself, and decided she was finished 1 week before I started Phen (which was 1 week ago) and gradual is best, even for your own body. It needs time to adjust to not making milk anymore, and that takes some time. Just try to be patient!

Feel free to PM me!

I agree with Crazee and Kellie. I have an 11 month old, and I had to wait before I could start trying to lose my pregnancy weight.

Be patient...you have your entire life to lose the weight, but remember you didn't put it on overnight. Keep that in mind. We are all here to support you, but we care about your baby too.

Your baby's only way of eating and nutrition is you. Think of it this way...would you want someone who is taking a drug you don't need and passing it along to you? There are numerous proven side-effects to this drug. Constipation, irritability, dry mouth, insomnia, I could go on. Your baby is too little to handle such a drug. It actually says DO NOT TAKE IF PREGNANT OR BREASTFEEDING, they say you shouldn't take it even if you are TRYING to get pregnant. It also says not intended for use of people under the age of 18 (meaning a legal adult).

Just a thought....

I've heard that breastfeeding can actually help take off the babyweight. It burns a lot of calories to make the milk. My personal theory is this is why we put on the extra weight. So there is a store of energy there for making milk. I would stick with the breastfeeding and wait on the Phen. It's such a special experience bonding with your baby this way and it's good for the baby's health too. The Phen will always be there, but that precious opportunity to nuture your baby won't. I stopped breastfeeding mine after only 6 weeks and I regret it to this day.

Nanekitoo,
Mine have always self weaned at 12 mos (was 6 mos preggo when my son self weaned) and it still makes me sad... I miss the closeness, so of course I still make them let me cuddle them..lol... my littlest one still loves it (she's only a year), my son likes it sometimes (2) but my 4 y/o daughter hates it! lol

Phen is in the Category C classification as far as potential with very high risks.

Wait on the phen until after you have completed the breastfeeding.

Im in the same boat soon to be, so I know your feeling with wanting to hurry along with the phen. But a few more weeks wont matter in hindsight.

Best of luck

Kellie...you breastfeed your two year old??? I personally think that when the child gets teeth...it is time to stop. I think if they are saying small words and talking it is just plain nasty. That would make me feel weird. I would feel like a pedophile if my 2 yr old son was ****ing on my nipple. I say 6 months is the longest it should go....again this is just my opinion. I breastfed mine for 8 weeks.

There is nothing wrong with breastfeeding a 2 year old. I did it. My pediatrician even recommened it. In most countries but here it is the norm, its only pple with bad attidudes towards it that makes it bad.
Breastfeeding a toddler helps with the child's ability to mature. Although some experts say a toddler who is not weaned will have difficulty becoming independent, it's usually the fearful, clingy children that have been pushed into situations requiring too much independence too soon. A breastfeeding toddler is having his dependency needs met. The closeness and availability of the mother through breastfeeding is one of the best ways to help toddlers grow emotionally.
Just as babies do, toddlers receive health benefits from breastfeeding. Your milk continues to provide immunities and vitamins, and can help protect your toddler from illness and allergies. If your toddler does get sick, nursing will help comfort him. In fact, a toddler with an upset stomach may be able to tolerate nothing but human milk.

UNICEF has long encouraged breastfeeding for two years and longer, and the American Academy of Pediatrics is now on record as encouraging mothers to nurse at least one year and as long after as both mother and baby desire.

i think it is a personal opinion on how long a child should breastfeed. 1 year is best but any amount of time is beneficial except after a year. studies show that after a year there is really not any nutritional value. if you did mean breasfeeding and not cuddling you should not feel like a pedophile, it's ev1's personal choice how long they breastfeed. i myself would feel uncomfortable but that is me. i know ppl who did for 5 yrs and yes that seems weird to most but that was her decision. if you do it for more than a year you need to consider why you are doing it--for your own benefit b/c you don't want to let go? but anyways gotta go. somewhere to be wish i could have finished what i wanted to say.

But NO NO NO on phen while breastfeeding please.

When my sister had her second child, her first was 5 or so- so she didn't have probs... but she had her third and the 2nd one who was like 15 months and had been weaned for like 6 months wanted to breast feed again... so she let him (only like 3 times and then he just stopped). A lot of times when there's two little ones so close in age, the older wants to breastfeed b/c of jealousy or just wants mom's attention... doesn't hurt them in any way. My mom did that with me b/c my bro was born when I was 14 months old. And I stopped on my own too.

Mom_with_baby
I know exactly how you feel and so does every woman out there who has nursed a child and bears the butt to to show it!!! I JUST finished nursing my baby. She is 18 months old. I would have continued to do it longer too, She was nursing through the night and that was the only time she nursed. It was simply for comfort. So for about a week I would comfort her(and wear a bra to bed. I would say,"boo-boos gone night night, daddy's gone night-night, and Ember needs to go night-night. Then the following week when she seemed less traumatized by the whole thing, daddy and her slept in her big girl bed and he comforted her at night. Now she is well adjusted and STILL needs mommy for plenty. You could wait a few more weeks, RIGHT? I promise it goes by quickly and one day you will be proud that you had a body that made your child's food, protected your child from sickness while delivering your antibodies, and comforted your child in the most precious moments
that you or your child will ever know. Everyone understands what you feel and we will be here when it's your time, I promise.

I really must respond to the nursing comments made here also. I respect everyone's opinions and there are many women out there who would agree that nursing a child that walks and talks is weird. I assure you there is nothing weird about it! I am a midwife in training have attended Le Leche league meetings and met women from many backgrounds and beliefs. Nursing is a beautiful thing and offers benefits for many years after it is over. I realize it may turn some people off. I realize that some people have issues around their bodies and its capabilities, but NO ONE should even use the word pedophile and nursing in the same sentence(although there are sickos in every category). I had my second child at home in a healthy safe environment and it was absolutely beautiful. Some would say this is dangerous and irresposible. Study the statistics and you realize it's not...
I have included an article from the World Health Organization on breastfeeding. I know it's long but felt that it was necessary. Thanks for reading and I hope this shed a little light on the subject and that this world will learn to be more tolerable of all people and their beliefs.

Exclusive Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is an unequalled way of providing ideal food for the healthy growth and development of infants; it is also an integral part of the reproductive process with important implications for the health of mothers. A recent review of evidence has shown that, on a population basis, exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months is the optimal way of feeding infants. Thereafter infants should receive complementary foods with continued breastfeeding up to 2 years of age or beyond.

To enable mothers to establish and sustain exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months, WHO and UNICEF recommend:

*

Initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour of life
*

Exclusive breastfeeding – that is the infant only receives breastmilk without any additional food or drink, not even water
*

Breastfeeding on demand – that is as often as the child wants, day and night
*

No use of bottles, teats or pacifiers

Breastmilk is the natural first food for babies, it provides all the energy and nutrients that the infant needs for the first months of life, and it continues to provide up to half or more of a child’s nutritional needs during the second half of the first year, and up to one-third during the second year of life.

Breastmilk promotes sensory and cognitive development, and protects the infant against infectious and chronic diseases. Exclusive breastfeeding reduces infant mortality due to common childhood illnesses such as diarrhoea or pneumonia, and helps for a quicker recovery during illness. These effects can be measured in resource-poor and affluent societies (Kramer M et al Promotion of Breastfeeding Intervention Trial (PROBIT): A randomized trial in the Republic of Belarus. Journal of the American Medical Association, 2001, 285 (4): 413-420)

Breastfeeding contributes to the health and well-being of mothers, it helps to space children, reduces the risk of ovarian cancer and breast cancer, increases family and national resources, is a secure way of feeding and is safe for the environment.

While breastfeeding is a natural act, it is also a learned behaviour. An extensive body of research has demonstrated that mothers and other caregivers require active support for establishing and sustaining appropriate breastfeeding practices. WHO and UNICEF launched the Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative in 1992, to strengthen maternity practices to support breastfeeding. The foundation for the BFHI are the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding described in Protecting, Promoting and Supporting Breastfeeding: a Joint WHO/UNICEF Statement. The evidence for the effectiveness of the Ten Steps has been summarized in a scientific review document.

The BFHI has been implemented in about 16.000 hospitals in 171 countries and it has contributed to improving the establishment of exclusive breastfeeding world-wide. While improved maternity services help to increase the initiation of exclusive breastfeeding, support throughout the health system is required to help mothers sustain exclusive breastfeeding.

WHO and UNICEF developed the 40-hour Breastfeeding Counselling: A training course to train a cadre of health workers that can provide skilled support to breastfeeding mothers and help them overcome problems. Basic breastfeeding support skills are also part of the 11-day Integrated Management of Childhood Illness training course for first-level health workers, which combines skills for adequate case management with preventive care. Evaluation of breastfeeding counselling delivered by trained health professionals as well as community workers has shown that this is an effective intervention to improve exclusive breastfeeding rates (link to graph)

The Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding describes the essential interventions to promote, protect and support exclusive breastfeeding.

Please do not use phen while breastfeeding..I breast fed for a total of 13 months, My Son until he was 6 months and my Daughter when she was 7 months although I thought I was going to have to nurse her until she was 1 and I would have if I had to and I did not diet at all..breastfeeding my help some moms lose weight but for the majority it wil help your insides contract back to normal and for me it did not help me lose one pound but I would do it all over again for the sake of healthy babies oh and did I mention my Son weighed a little over 9 pounds at birth and my Daughter 10 pounds and natural btw with the help of epidural

So Again..PLEASE DO NOT TAKE PHEN WHILE NURSING!!!

LOL.. Songstress, I missed that you added how big your babies were at the end of your post there..lol.. My first was 2 weeks early, and weighed 8 lbs 5 oz,
My 2nd (we call him bubba..lol) was 3 days late, and weighed 11 lbs 1 oz,
and my 3rd was 1 day early (induced because we weren't sure of her size) and she was 9 lbs 5 oz. Stank with Bubba, cus he couldn't fit into any of the cute 0-3 mos clothes we had for him, and had to buy 6 mos size..lol.

I had them all natural, and love my big babies..lol, I don't think I'd know what to do with an "average" size baby (which is between 6 1/2 and 8 lbs) I'd be afraid I'd break something! lol

Juice2640, I think you really could have phrased that a lot differently. Even if she were still nursing her 2 year old, that is not uncommon or unhealthy.

You obviously have strong feelings about it but this is a society where breasts are for decoration instead of what nature intended - feeding your child.

Lions nurse their young for 3-6 months, zebras 8-13 months, dolphins 1-2 years, chimps and apes 3-4 years. We are mammals just like they are.

Studies have also proven that the longer babies are breastfed, they have a lower risk of disease and higher IQs than bottlefed babies.

It is not unnatural, it is not nasty, it is not sexual. It's nutrition and nurturing.

That said.. you should NOT take Phen while breastfeeding. Just as your immunities are passed on, so are any drugs that you are taking. Including nicotine and alcohol.

some things are just common sense. DO NOT BREASTFEED YOUR BABY WHILE TAKING ANYTHING (MEDS).... WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO U. YOUR BABY OR YOUR WEIGHT.....

Breastfeeding burns 500+ calories a day (except in Australian women.. for them it's 700-1000)!

That's like an hour on the eliptical without having to breaking a sweat lol.. take advantage of it while you can

It really is different for Australian women. The only reason I know this is because I've been preparing a Breastfeeding presentation for the past 6 hours.. so I'm full of lots of useless breastfeeding trivia.

You should not take phentermine while breastfeeding. It is excreted into the breastmilk... This drug is addictive and could make your infant addicted also. Especially since they are so teenie it could affect their little bodies worse then yours. My sister and I are adopting children.... when hers (she's 3 now) was a newborn it was addicted to drugs and she had red rings around her pupil and had a very bad case of colic, not to metion the withdraw. I have a 4 year old from same mother he was addicted to drugs also when he was infant. (I know this isnt the same thing as Phen********-- but the outcome is the same..) He was in withdraw. The baby that I have( she's 10 months old now- I brought her home from hospital) From the same birthmom was not addicted at all. Thank goodness there was no trace of drugs in her system.. ** Birthmom was only 20 at the time(she just turned 21 in Jan '05) and my babygirl was her fourth child and she doesnt have any of her children because she was unfit... I just dont know why the courts dont stop this person from conceiving....... she is now back on drugs, and I've heard that she is trying to get preg. again.
Sorry..... I'm just running off the mouth... I forgot where I was lol....
Hope you make the right decision..... Good luck with baby!

Please DO NOT breastfeed and take Phen. I waited to take the phen until I weaned my baby. I didn't LIKE the extra 'baby fat' but my baby's health is SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT. Please, post back and let us know what you decided. {{HUGS}}

PLUS, keep stopping by even if you are NOT taking phen! You will find LOTS of useful information!

I breastfed mine for 8 weeks.
sorry had to jump in here as I do work in Lactation Research, was a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor for WIC and am striving to be a Lactation Consultant.
I have nursed a child well beyond the " plain nasty" period. Actually for almost 4 yrs.
With the correct information and education about the benefits of breastfeeding a child I hope that few people would share your opinion.

If anyone has breastfeeding questions I would be happy to answer them.

Thank you

"1 year is best but any amount of time is beneficial except after a year. studies show that after a year there is really not any nutritional value. "

There is still nutritional value but just as breastmilk is constantly changing to meet the individual child's needs, it is different than the milk of a mother of a newborn.
The antibody properties are still there and in full force.

I just wanted to say all you pro-breastfeeding women are awesome! lol.. with my first I didn't breastfeed past 3 weeks, because I had thrush (and jess did, too) and had NO support or information about it.. I pumped for about 3 months, but then switched to formula. I was 18 and had no idea what I was doing when it came to BFing, so you girls are doign a great thing, educating women on it and it's benifits and everything...

(I researched and bf #2 and 3 just fine, thanks to my sister, who had bf'd her 2 children til about 2.5 or 3, and she helped me a LOT with it)

I would like to put in here too that I am totally PRO breastfeeding!!! I hadn't responded before now because I try to stay away from really hot topics. But, to each his own. I didn't bf my 1st child and she turned into something else (she is 15 now!!) Never felt as close to her as my other 3, always thought that this was the reason. I bf my son (#2) for 10 mo until I had to have an emergency surgery!! I bf my 3rd child (girl) for 18 months until she weaned herself. At the end it was mainly for comfort though for her. My last I bf for 25 months until she also weaned herself. I had absolutely no problems with their teeth since they learned at a young age that if you bite you don't eat!!! But I don't think it was "nasty" at all. However, my father in law didn't like it so I wouldn't do it while we were at their house unless I went into a private room. But other than that I never had any problems with people. Well, I had one comment on a plane where an older lady was sitting beside me and said plain as day to someone on her other side "SHE's over here bf'ing again, why can't she just go to the bathroom to do THAT" I calmly looked at her and said "Um, ma'am, no disrespect intended but do you eat in the bathroom?" she said no and I said that my daughter won't be eating in the bathroom either.

So, anyway, as I said before I totally think that you shouldn't be taking really anything while bf'ing. I ABSOLUTELY love babies (That is why I ended up having 4!!! LOL)

crazeemom...that was a good come back on the airplane story.

For all of you that were "offended" from my recent post, I am sorry....it wasn't intended for anyone in here, I simply was saying that "I" would feel nasty. I was stating my opinion on the subject and I don't think that there is anything wrong with that.

Ya'll can breastfeed your children until their 18 years old if you want to...they can be latched on at their highschool graduation...LOL. That is your deal...whatever floats your boat.

I was just saying that I would never do that. I don't feel there is anything wrong with breastfeeding at all, I just think that after they turn a year old, they need to grow up and start drinking out of a cup, being potty trained, being taught how to be independent...you know...cut the cord type of thing. My son is very independent, he is 11 months old and I am already potty training him. He is very intellegent for his age. He is already putting words together to form sentences. I am very proud. I don't think he (AND I AM SPEAKING OF MY SON ONLY) would have walked and been able to talk and be this independent if I would have kept treating him like a baby and breast-feeding him after he turned one.

Again....just my opinion.

I stopped brestfeeding my baby @ 4 months because he was using it as a soother. He drank from a bottle much better and now at 7 months he's on a sippy cup and loves that even more!!! I agree they should start being weaned by a year-but then again its up to the mom to choose what is best for her baby-BUT don't take the phen while doing so-it even says on the bottle not too!!!! You burn so many calories doing so.
Speaking of BIG babies my first was 10 lbs, second was 5 weeks early and 8 lbs and my last was on time and 9 lbs 2 oz!!! And all were 23 inches long-they get their height from me being 5'10 I miss it-but still cuddle LOTS.

jUICE-
I felt the need to comment once again since this became a conversation about the outcome of the child. My son is almost five in August. He walked at 9 months and began talking before that. He was using complete sentences, such as "mom, I want juice, pease", at 11 months. He recognized his alphabets and numbers 1-10 by the time he was a year and a half. He asks deeply philosophical questions.(His dad is a philosopher, though) He is extremely bright and confident. I nursed him almost until his second birthday. I understand in this world that people feel the need to "cut the cord" and create these little indepedent children who can do a lot for themselves and are extremely book smart. The worry for me is that I think our world is more harsh than it used to be when children worked farms and did chores with their parents. We live in a society where kids are becoming intellectual at 4, reading and writing, yet our dropout rate is phenomenal. We live in a world of daycare and au pair's.I have a problem with neither. But I think it's important to question the status quo when it comes to our children. OK they can tie their shoes, and multiply by the thousands, but in the end a child who has become too much too fast will feel the pressure and give up. You can't cuddle, love and play with your child enough. Math and science will be there when their brains and bodies are ready. Play is the most magnificent way for a child to learn. They will experience gravity, mass, physics in tangible ways that they will never experience them in a modern daycare or classroom. I think each parent must do what's right for them. But how long you breastfeed does not affect your child's intelligence (although most studies say it improves it). It the confidence and love that you arm your child with to face this world! The more attached your child is, the more they trust you, the more they trust you, the more they will turn to you. The more they turn to you, the more chances you have at helping them to make good and moral decisions. I'll take attachment anyday!!!!
I have already answered the breastfeeding comment.
