Thank you for your posts april b. I breastfed all 4 of my children until just after their first birthdays. They chose to self wean at that time. I would have stuck with it until they were ready to quit, even if it had been months later. My first was running at 10 1/2 months. My second was speaking paragraphs by 10 1/2 - 11 months. My third had a huge vocabulary way before a year. My fourth, the 20 month old, is pretty average. I don't think breastfeeding slows any child down, sometimes it contributes to help them develop faster. That's not why I did it. I did it to foster security and independence and to give them the best health I could.

I have to admit....and this is just my personal preference, that i think 18months should be the cut off time for breastfeeding. But its an individual decision.
What i really really hate...and dont mind saying is........children who are old enough to drink from a cup walking around with a bottle..usually full of juice or soft drink...or even worse a soother sticking out of their mouths. To me that is just lazy parenting. But again...just my opinion.
This thread is about to make me blow a gasket for several reasons.
First and formost, PLEASE DO NOT take phen while nursing. It could be so harmfull to your baby.
2nd- This really is a special time between you and your baby. Your body makes the perfect food, why switch to something substandard that is the 5th approved method for infant feeding? Yes, you read that righ..Formula is the 4th recommended way on the list to feed a baby.
Also, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong w/ nursing a baby once they get teeth. That theory is just asinine. The World Heakth Orginazation recommends exclusivly nursing for 6 months AT LEAST, then experimenting w/ some solids. It is also recommended that a child is nursed to yrs 2 or older.
Juice- Why would you feel "nasty"? Your breasts were made for nursing. America has so over sexulized them, and so many people have forgotten what they are actually intended for. They ARE intended for child nourishment.
Here's a little more info if anyone would like to read up on Breastfeeding. http://www.who.int/child-adolescent-...ION/infant.htm
I have many more if anyone is interested.
I really hope that through education, many Americans perception of breastfeeding can be changed. It's not gross, or dirty. There are so many health benefits for babies and moms that nurse.
April, ROCK on sister!!!

Yes, you read that right..Formula is the 4th recommended way on the list to feed a baby, not 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, 4TH. That should speak volumes right there.
Also, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong w/ nursing a baby once they get teeth. That theory is just asinine. The World Health Orginazation recommends exclusivly nursing for 6 months AT LEAST, then experimenting w/ some solids, while still haveing BM as the main source of nutrition. That's all. I'll step off my soapbox. I nursed my daughter for 2 1/2 yrs..obviousley I'm very passionate about this issue.
Sorry about the double post. I didn't think the first went through, then I editted and added on to the second. :lol
Alicia~ I totally agree that breasts have been over sexualized. I mean, it's what they were MADE for! To feed a child! I think it's sad that some feel it's 'nasty' or 'inappropriate' to do what nature / God intended... JMO though

Damn! I keep saying 5th, I meant 4th!
I just wanted to tell you Kellie, you are Awesome! I think it is wonderful that despite your first expeience nursing you chose to educate yourself and try again.Originally posted by Kellie_mo3:
I just wanted to say all you pro-breastfeeding women are awesome! lol.. with my first I didn't breastfeed past 3 weeks, because I had thrush (and jess did, too) and had NO support or information about it.. I pumped for about 3 months, but then switched to formula. I was 18 and had no idea what I was doing when it came to BFing, so you girls are doign a great thing, educating women on it and it's benifits and everything...
(I researched and bf #2 and 3 just fine, thanks to my sister, who had bf'd her 2 children til about 2.5 or 3, and she helped me a LOT with it)
I too had my first when I was 18 but I had NO information about breastfeeding. No one in my family had nursed before so, I did what I saw at the time and that is formula feed. 8 yrs later I learned tons and exclusively breastfed (difficult & painfully at times) my daughter & worked FT. I saw tons of differences in the health of my 2 children in just the 1st 6 mths. Since then, my 2 SIL's have gone on to nurse as well as several friends. You can ask my almost 12 yr old son what breasts are for, and he will tell you, "To Breastfeed your baby".
I think just sharing your experience will help others to learn more about the BEST way to feed children.
Yes, I echo Everyone else's reply. Phen is not safe for breastfeeding women. I am a Nurse on a Postpartum /Newborn Nursery (Birthing Center) and Certain drugs should NOT be used by nursing Mom's. The fewer medicines the better, of course.Breastfeeding is a Marvelous start to our Babie's first days, months. And it's such a short time in our our lifetime, So please, when breastfeeding is finished for you, then begin the phen if you desire.Until then, just eat healthy foods, and drink lots of water! You need extra fluids when Nursing a baby. I nursed 5 children of my own (all for about 15 months, one baby I weaned at 3 months due to surgery I had to have). The 15 monthers just weaned naturally and slowly. It was a very wonderful experience and one that I miss now (My baby is 12 now!!) I do commend you for breastfeeding your little one. Good Luck. Michnica~ I can relate on the painful part..lol. When my son was about 2 weeks old it became VEY painful for me, to the point we were both on the couch crying (he cus he was hungry, me cus it hurt so dang much) and I ALMOST gave up again.. that's when my sis came to the rescue! He was having problems latching on because I have large nipples, and my sis gave me Lansinoh Lanolin, and breast shells (the kind that don't touch, but make like an ***** around for between feedings) and the next morning the pain was completely gone! Seriously, just the tiniest bit of support, encouragement and help makes a huge difference!

Thankz for all the advice. I am not going to take Phen, while breastfeeding my daughter. she is 15 months. In my religion it is best to breastfeed your kids until they are 2 years old. After they turn 2 then you have to stop. My 3 year old son weaned himself at 1 1/2. I don't think she is going to do that. I have got her down to nursing only at night someday. But the main problem I am having now is she won't eat anything else.So I have to end up nursing her someday's in the middle of the day just to make sure she has eaten something that day
Wow I was comming on here to ask a question about breastfeeding. Thanks for the links guys..My question was I just started a couple of days ago,my baby is 7days old now,but I feel like i'm not producing enough milk so I end up giving the bottle at the end and he drinks it all.So my question is being that I didn't start right away i'm I producing enough milk? Also how long are they suppose to feed on each breast?I really want to try with this baby plus he latches on great...Oh please no phen while breastfeeding..please don't.Thanks in advane I will also post this as a new thread..![]()

You all need to back up off me cause I have a right to state my opinion just as much as ya'll do and I didn't say $hit about any of you, I was stating MY OPINION AND HOW I FEEL!!! THATS STILL LEGAL RIGHT? Anyways...just felt like some of ya'll took this thread and ran to TX and back with it. Lighten up and get out of my throat!
P.S. I wasn't comparing my son's abilities to anyone else's in this thread. I was simply stating my opinion......and I am not gonna let anyone here talk down to me like that, especially when they dont know me.
There is MY REPLY!!!!!!!!!

NO THANKS APRIL B, I HAVE HEARD ENOUGH FROM YOU. THANKS THOUGH......LETS JUST DROP IT.
I never thought I'd have my feelings hurt over the internet. OUCH! BUT, anyway, life will go on and so will people who believe that only their opinion is valid, but a response to their opinion with an opinion is not! Sorry for all that I have pi$$ed off. I will make sure, in the future, to leave my space empty so that everyone else has plenty of room for THEIR opinion.

You know what, you took this whole thread a little bit too far April. I think that YOU PERSONALLY took offense to what I said when I wasn't even speaking directly to you. Now I infact to offense when you starting comparing your son's accomplishments to mine when I was just stating that "I don't think that MY SON would be doing the things HE IS DOING if I would have breastfed him longer"
The reason why I said that is because when my son was first born, I spoiled him, always carried him around and was holding him all the time. HE TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THAT. He knew if he cried, I would pick him up. I breastfed for 10 weeks and I TRULY LOVED IT and wish I could have done it for a little longer, but everytime I laid him down somewhere he would cry.
I couldn't shower, eat, sleep without having around me somewhere and I attribute that to holding him all the time. I am a single mother and I didn't have the time to carry him around all day. I am not lucky enough to be a "stay at home and raise your kids like a good mother should" mother like some women are. I guess it is my fault because I made the decision to have him, knowing that I would be a single mother.
I stated my opinion...true enough, but you took immediate offense to EVERYTHING I said personally and I wasn't even speaking directly to you.
Your replies were directly to me and I did NOT appreciate it. I never said your opinions "didn't matter" but you was directing all your attention to me. If you wanted to "state your opinion" you would have just done that and left my name out of it.
If your feelings are hurt over this website and people who dont even matter to you, you need to get thicker skin......
P.S. I think some women breast-feed a little longer because of the love and nurturing they are missing in their life so they try to get it from their babies by feeling "needed" all the time.
I'm sure that you'd prefer that I have no response, but I do. I directed my reply to you because you were the one person who inspired my reply, not because you "offended" me. I thought perhaps you could understand someone who is different than you. It seems that you aren't looking for that though. I'm not even sure if you read my PM. I never cursed at you or took anything too far. You had a reply, I replied. Then you replied again, being very sure that we knew it was just your opinion about your son personally. So, I replied to let you know it can be done in any way and all my reasons supporting this. You then again replied by basically telling "people" to back off of you and getting very upset. Why not PM me at the unkindness you felt right at the get go? I would do no less for someone. Now I feel I must defend myself and you for feeling the way you do. It's late and I'm sure you're starting to think this is silly too. Finally,I have NEVER said a good mother stays at home and raises her children. A good mother gives her children the best SHE, as an individual, is capable of giving. You seem to be doing just that! I'm not hurt because I need thicker skin. I'm hurt that you, even after a private explanation, can convince yourself that you or anyone doesn't matter to me. This site is a microcosm of the world, this site reflects the state of our universe, EVERYONE matters!

April,
Very well said. I believe some very good friendships can be made on this board, and feelings can and do get hurt. It IS just like the real world in many ways. Hang in there. I've been reading your posts for several weeks now, and I know you did not deliberately mean to hurt anyone's feelings.
