Hi, first of all I want to say how excited I am to find this forum! I went to a medical weight loss clinic about 3 weeks ago for help to lose weight. I gained 60 pounds in 4 months while undergoing in vitro fertilization procedure and taking a lot of hormones. That was a year and a half ago and it was not budging. The Dr. at the clinic was wonderful and I learned a lot of interesting information such as: Dopamine is the chemical responsible for suppressing hunger and controlling cravings, if your body doesn't produce enough dopamine this is why you are hungry a lot and have cravings. Phentermine works to send the same signal to the brain telling it that you are full and lessens cravings. She believes that when you stop taking the med your brain returns to normal and you will begin to experience hunger and cravings therefore she recommends a daily dose of phen until you reach your goal weight. If at any time you experience returning hunger or cravings and a stall in weight loss she will prescribe another med similar in action for about a month and then restart the phen. She herself reached her goal weight 7 years ago and continues to take a "maintenance dose" of two pills per week to keep her weight stable. This is what she recommends to her patients. She also prescribed me Xenical to take once daily with dinner while following a low-fat diet. She said that usually Xenical will block one third of the fat you eat but if you eat a low-fat diet it will pull fat from your fat stores(especially around the waist). I was a little surprised by the fact that she recommends being on phen or another similar drug for the rest of my life, but she explained to me that obesity is a disease and just because you lose weight you still have obesity in your genes and a maintenance dose will be a safe and effective way to keep weight under control. Has anyone ever heard this way of thinking? Of course I must continue to have check-ups to check labs and blood pressure. But I was just thinking, do you think this is just a way to keep money coming in to the practice? Two month visits for life? But, she is very convincing when she explains her way of thinking. By the way I have lost 14.5 pounds in 3 weeks!
