Thread: Questions for those that are hypothyroid

I recently went to the doctor due to many of of the symptoms you associate with a thyroid problem, being cold all the time, really tired, weight gain and inability to loose weight even when I try.

Well I had blood work done and the nurse told me my levels were a little off, I want to say she said I was at a 3.6. At the time I had no clue what she was talking about but have since read up a little about it. Anyway, they put me on a really low dose of Synthroid. It is only .025MG (25MCG). I have not started it yet, for a couple of reasons. 1)I am horrible about taking medicine and dread the fact that if I start taking this I will most likely always have to take it 2)It is such a small amount, I question whether that will even help and 3)and most importantly is I read quite a few posts where people have gained weight on Synthroid

First off, what is a good range? I was thinking 2, but as they told me mine was just slightly high I am guess they are shooting for 3...

For those on Synthroid, do you think it has made you gain weight?

I was so excited when they actually said it was a thyroid problem because I thought the medicine would normal things out and I would loose. I am starting to doubt that now. Of course I'm now just wishing the doctor would have really listened to my emphasis on the weight issue and stuck me on some diet pills, but alas I will once again have to go on-line to get those.

Thanks to any that can answer some of these

    Hi Ya!
I'd say take it if your Doc prescribed it. It is a small amt. I take .2 mg Mon-Sat and .3 mg on Sundays. I don't have a thyroid though due to cancer a few years back.

From the way I understand it...your thyroid controls your metabolism...if your's isn't functioning properly..you'll gain weight anyway.

    Good luck to ya!

I'd say definitely take it! I was just a little off when my doc tested me back in '96. She put me on the same dose you're on. I can tell it helps with my energy from day to day. Even a slight bit low can affect you. I recently got moved up to .075mg because my levels had dropped a bit more. It sure can't hurt anything, and you may be amazed at how much it helps! Some people have no symptoms if their levels are slightly off, but some have drastic ones. From experience I'd say go for it

Leigh, I would definately take that synthroid. I take synthroid (150 mg) since I had thyroid cancer last year and had to have my thyroid removed. I know it's not fun to think about taking something for the rest of your life, but that synthroid is WAY easier to take than my daily calcium.

Look at it this way: Your thyroid is your body's engine. If its running slow, your metabolism slows down. If you're eating right and working out, you won't gain weight.

    Good luck!

Been on thyroid since I was a teen. I had a goiter. Small one but none the less. Synthroid disolved it. When my levels are checked and my dosage is correct. I too can loose some weight. Thyroid is a very serious gland. It can cause so many problems, you can't even imagine,if not treated and stablized or brought up to par.
No One gains from Synthroid unless they are over active and need to gain. It isn't a "get instant" results kind of thing. It took 6 months or more for the goiter to dissolve and a year for the weight to all come off that I gained due to the under active thyroid. ~ Ginny ~

I'm on 150mcg of Synthroid. My dr actually upped my dosage by 25 mcg when he prescribed my Phentermine. So, I'd assume 25 does something.

I know it's sad to think of "having" to take a pill every day for the rest of your life. I know I cried for days after I was diagnosed.

    Good luck!

I had my thyroid taken out last year, and I'm also on Synthroid for life. Been there, done that with all the problems related to thyroid disorders at such a young tender age .

Take the Synthroid! You'll thank yourself after you feel like you have energy again. It's not an expensive drug and for me, I don't consider it a big deal to have to take 1 pill a day for the rest of my life....it's like taking a vitamin, ya know..ya just do it. Oh..and you have to take Synthroid on an empty stomach, so it prevents me from eating first thing! If you have any questions just PM me. I'd be happy to help.
