I live with my dad. I originally moved in to get through school, but JUST as I got done school he got laid off from his job at the paper mill in town. So, I've stayed and continued to pay his utility bills so he doesn't go under. My dad is LAZY. I literally spend my days off cleaning, cleaning and cleaning some more. Since becoming jobless in Jauary the man has done the dishes 3 times, yet has found the time to make a permanent indent of his ***** on the couch. I of course have done them countless times. I've kept up with all my cleaing except one thing I recently stopped doing....dishes. I HATE doing the dishes. We don't live in the 21st...or 20th century for that matter because we don't have a dishwasher. So, I'm leaving them. They can ROT for all I care. I'm done doing dishes! I will eat takeout from now on if that's what it comes to. We've got 4 forks left, 2 butter knives, no bowls and he's only got one coffee cup. I'M ON STRIKE! GOOD LUCK, POP!
If you keep on going the way you're going you'll end up where you're heading - which direction are you aiming for?

Good for you Bethany. I had to go on strike in the beginning. Now, I have full cooperation.

I have done that a million times, only with my hubby and kids. Hopefully your dad will get the picture better then they did.

No need for YOU to suffer, Bethany!

Invest in paper plates & plastic utensils (hidden in your room)

That's what my family eats off of - I rarely break out the dishes (I hate cleaning them & I HAVE a dishwasher!)

What about father's day coming up? Pick your battles...poor dad will probably leave them all and wait for the "big day" and ask you to wash them all! lol

It seemed people use to do that in the olden ages. Men brought home the cash, cut the grass. Women stayed home, cooked and cleaned, etc.If your dad is fairly young and all the other ladies on this forum that say their husband/boyfriend act that way, they should promptly kick their husband/boyfriend in the @ss and you should go on strike.

Hold your ground. I've done that before only to freak out over the mess and spend the entire day cleaning the kitchen. I feel your pain though. It's hard to do all the domestic work when the others aren't contributing in some other way.

I just don't understand why "the others" can't help out.

I have a nice, almost brand new dishwasher, and I quit using it, except for dire necessity, a long time ago. Nothing irks me more than to leave the sink clean at night, and get up in the morning to dirty dishes which have spontaneously erupted overnight! The Kitchen Slave was emancipated a LONG time ago. BtB wants me to cook, he had better get that new kitchen built! (My kitchen is the size of a small walk-in closet, so small that the refrigerator has to be in a different room!)

Oh, and while I am thinking of it, get your Dad an appt. with the doctor or local mental health clinic. He is a prime candidate for anti-depressants.

Keep it just clean enough to keep out the vermin. And if YOU have to clean something more than once, and it can be, pack it away. Out of sight can't be used or dirtied!

If my dad was still alive I would definetly not mind doing the dishes and taking care of him every day of my life. I know it is annoying to you but when he is gone you will wish he was here and would do anything for him.

I know you might not see my point to this because you still have you father because believe me when my dad was alive there were things that bothered me about him and I stopped doing alot of things because of that but now I realize that I really wished I didnt.

Just wanted to mention that.

Bethany--How is the strike going.. it would make me nuts.. Id invest in paper plates and plastic utensils (paper plates RULE my house!)

Melmin--I see your point. Its difficult to not appreciate your point, and I know things are tough for you right now and I REALLY hope they get better!

I go on strike all the time, only to what Mother said, get frustrated and end up spending a whole day in the house cleaning until I am done. I just can't stand it after a certain point, I guessI am a little compulsive about cleaning. But I have small kids, so I think it's important. If it was my dad like you, I'd have to try and stick it out and be stubborn.

I went on strike years ago and my house is still a mess. You don't teach them any lessons, you just teach them it is ok to be triflin.

My initial thought is how do you do the dishes without a dishwasher?

Second, did you issue a proclamation letter? Verbally stating your intentions is a recipe for miscommunication. By putting your grievance in writing both side will know there the other stands. Much easier to negotiate that way. Are you going to picket or simply stage a walk-out?
