I knew who Indian Larry was as well. I watch the Dicovery Channel bike shows, with my favorite being American Chopper! I recently watched the rerun of Jesse James' show when he drove across county with Indian Larry to go to a bike show. I saw I.L. do the same thing (standing on the bike while driving) in the middle of the desert. Sad to see him pass,
HOWEVER....with him being as "into" bikes as he was, he should have known better than to ride without a helmet, especially trying to do a stunt. Please do not get me wrong, I am NOT saying..."good for him, he got what he deserved for not wearing a helmet" but I AM saying, his death should only prove a point just how important wearing a helmet can be. Even if you are hopping on your bike to ride 2 minutes down the road to pick up a Pepsi, you should ALWAYS wear your helmet.
I live very close to New Orleans, so I pick up radio stations from there. Recently (I beleive the beginning of the month) a new governor was elected (female I think) and upon entering office, the helmet law was changed in Louisiana. Before, helmets were optional for anyone over 18. How stupid is that?!?! Of course all the bikers were upset and there was a protest at the governor's mansion in Baton Rouge. Come on, use some common sense....it does NOT matter how good of a rider you are, you can fall off the bike and crack your skull open instantly. You may be an excellant rider, but there is always "Murphy" you have to worry about. "Murphy" being my little buddy from Murphy's Law. This may be opening up a can of worms, but this could be a nice healthy debate. Helmets all the time regardless of age? H e l l yeah!! Dumb to ride without one? H e l l yeah!! While I am on a roll, I also do not think the tiny little "skull cap" helmets would do much protecting if you would get into an accident. When I ride, I use an entire full face helmet. Motorcycle accidents are no joke.
I worked in a hospital on both a Navy base and a Marine Corps base. You have a stupid kid out joy riding and showing off on a motorcycle and then we (at the hospital) get one road rashed, bruised up kid with a possible serious head injury, helmet or no helmet. Motorcycles are not to be taken lightly. You are totally open to ALL the elements, every tiny little thing effects you when on a motorcycle. You think you are as safe on a bike as you are in a car. NOT!
I am saddened to see Indian Larry pass, however, he of all people should have known better to wear a helmet. I was more shocked when I read he was not wearing a helmet than I was to see he passed away from a head injury. Alas, he did die doing what he so dearly loved. Perhaps he is in Heaven riding bikes with the angels now (hopefully with a helmet on this time!)
