Call me a dork but I just discovered Slim Fast. And I tell you what, it is perfect for those moments when you dont have time to make a breakfast or a lunch. Sometimes if I get home to late for work, I use it for my dinner. (I don't like to eat late). And it helps with regularity. Each shake has 6 grams of Dietary Fiber. I lost 4 lbs this past week. I like 'em. Just wanted to share my new found discovery.

    mom2hunt,
I like them too! They are actually very good for you nutritionally as well---vitamins, minerals, fiber, etc. My problem was I never really used them to replace a meal because I wasn't sated. Maybe I could do that on the phen. Thanks for the idea.

OK I hate to do this but Slim Fast isnt the best thing for you. Have you looked at the sugar content? It has as much sugar as a snickers bar! I suggest going to GNC and getting a good protein shake. They have all the vitamins and minerals you need without the sugars and fat. I use 100% whey protein By Optimum. It tastes good and Its loaded with protein. You need protein! Good luck!

I like them too. I buy the kind you mix together. Do you buy the cans? They taste a little funny to me. What flavor do you use...maybe I just should try a differnt flavor. Also Wal-Mart make a generic brand of Slim Fast...has anybody tried that? I wonder if it tastes the same.

    Turbo-mom....

    Question?

Does the protein shakes also have the Dietary Fiber? That is my favorite part. I know the slim fast has a substantial amount of sugars but I can burn off those 220 calories in no time (I only drink one a day) in place of one meal. I eat one other meal, and don't eat a 3rd meal. And I usually will snack on a grapefruit at some point. This amount of food keeps me full, and I still have that one meal a day to fit in the foods that I really want. That is why I love the slim fast b/c it has the vitamins that help out.

Just wondering what was in the protein shakes and wondering if they are filling as a meal suplement?

    Hi mom2

I kind of agree about the sugar. And I don't have a can here to look at or read but if my memory serves me right (Ha...now that is really funny) but I think they are also very high in sodium. I use to drink one a day in the morning but....not any more.
I've been doing "The Prism" diet and on that...there is just NO SUGAR!
Well...that's not completely true..it has to be listed 5th or more in the list of ingredients. I don't even use ketchup anymore!

I did try the Wal-mart brand and I prefer slim-fast over it. The reason is because the wal-mart brand gave me really bad heartburn. At first it tasted really good to me but then, because of the bad heartburn, I began to hate it. Also for all of you chocolate lovers out there...I am a total chocoholic and believe it or not, I prefer all diet shakes or mixes to be vanilla. They don't have the bitter taste that I think the chocolate ones do. I think it is just because you can't make chocolate good for you without losing its wonderful, awesome qualities!

Too much sugar - I think. But, hey, if it's working for you.........

I occasionally use Luna Bars to replace a meal if I'm out and about. Only 180 calories, and they do the trick for me. I just realized I haven't checked the sugar content on them. I'd better do that before I knock SlimFast!

Okay - I checked on Luna Bars. 12 grams of brown rice sugar. SlimFast's website doesn't give that info. How do they compare?

I just happened to have a can of slim fast in my frig. My husband told me that it had a lot of sugar in it, so I quit drinking it.

I am going to use a can of my husbands Mt.Dew to compare.

    Calories SF 220 Mt. 170
    Fat 3g 0
    Sodium 220mg 70mg
    Sugars 40g 46g
    protein 10g 0

As you can see the slim fast has alot of sodium and sugars. Yes, it has protein and fiber but, the sodium and sugar is bad.

I agree with turboboysmom, go to GNC and get one of there protein drinks. Talk to the person at the counter. They will tell you all you need to know.

But, if slim fast works for you, keep doing it. Just leave your options open.

    mornin,

i dont no i think there is a plan for everyone, whatever works for you. as for me when i drink a shake im looking for a burger an fries to go with it. however, i was told that if u mix ur shakes to get vanilla and buy sugar free tang or crystal light in rasberry er something mix it up regularly and use it in place of water to make ur shake more tasty.

i hav found wen i dont eat 3 meals a day an 2 snacks an of couse that 5 quarts of water a day i dont lose as much weight. i stay at or under 20 grams of fat a day with five servings of no more than 25 grams of sugar per serving an this seems to be working for me at this time. i have tried so many others lost weight an gained back more as i wasnt able to make that type of eating a way of life for me. this plan i believe i can stick with forever an i dont feel deprived. i am eating more then ever an very satisfied an there is not too much that i cant eat. gosh i am so windy!!!!

Ok I could not find the fiber content on this certain protein shake. There are tons more though. I personally like this one the best becuase of the very low sugar and carb content. Because of the low calories you could have something high in fiber to go along with it if you wanted it. I actually just double the shake and drink 16 oz, its still 220 calories and a whopping 44 grams of protein! Go to GNC and get yourself familiar with the whole store, the person in there working should be able to help you get the right supplements. I as a little intimidated going in there at first because I thought it was just for fit people to go..lol and the saleslady looked like Arnold Swarzeneggar in a skirt! (ok I know I butchered his last name) Here is the info on the one that I like:

I have been doing Slim Fast along with my phen since January. It works for me. (I've lost 35lbs.) Having to make so many choices during the day for meals is too difficult for me especially since I'm often out and about and also have kids to feed. For me, it's easy, and controlled. I do the Slim Fast bars. I love them and would certainly rather have the chocolate/peanut bar than a plain tuna in a pita. But that's just me--a chocoholic. My motto is, "If it ain't sweet, it's just not good." The bars keep me satisfied and not feeling deprived and then really I can pretty much eat whatever for dinner. Like everyone said, I think you just have to find what works for you. Best of luck to you!

    Question

    TurboBoysMommy

Do you have a 16 oz shake twice a day, or is that a one time thing? It sounds like something I might like, but not sure that 8oz would cut it for me! Is that the best one at GNC, or will they try to sell me on a ton of different brands? Im not made of money, but Id be willing to do this! What flavor do YOU get, and what do you mix yours with? (milk...water?)

The concept of having a Slim Fast is good except for the sugar....I may try drinking protein shakes because I am terrible about skipping meals because I don't have time to eat.

Protein shakes are not a good source of energy because protein in and of itself is not a good source of energy. I wouldn't recommend using protein shakes as a meal replacement. In fact I wouldn't recommend anyone use protein shakes unless you are actively doing resistence training and your muscles are synthesizing protein a lot. At which point you'd mainly want to drink them withing 30 minutes of a workout. If you're going to use them and decide to mix them with water make sure you have cold water. Put a large bottle of water in the fridge just to use with your protein shakes. As for brands Nitro-tech and Simply Protein by EAS are 2 of the more popular. The EAS is usually the most cost effective. I can't remember the sites I use to buy mine from when I was lifting weights a lot, but I'd say you'll find protein powder a lot cheaper online than in any store. And a lot of sites that you find protein powder will run specials on free shipping from time to time. If I can locate some of the better sites to buy protein powder from I'll post it here later.

I found it! I can't believe I forgot about this site. This is probably the single best place to buy protein powder, though I still say it's not really worth using unless you are lifting weights.

Welcome, Jammies, but I have to disagree with you about protein powder being only of use to weightlifters.

While it's true that the best source of high-quality nutrients are real foods, soy protein powder has been a real find for me as a source of portable protein without accompanying fat. As a cyclist, my protein needs are somewhat greater than most people's. A scoop of protein powder in a smoothie helps me meet those, especially since I find that liquids, rather than solids, work better for me immediately post-ride. The protein is always accompanied by complex carbs; (1-4 ratio) but you will find low-carb proponents on this board as well.

Soy protein is also a boon to women as a source of plant estrogens. For those of us approaching menopause, soy is joy!

FYI, for those of you who live in the vicinity of a Trader Joe's, I use good old TJ's soy protein powder. In fact, I seem to do most of my grocery shopping there these days...

    Good luck,
    Lee

Well, for one thing you said yourself you are a cyclist and as such your muscles are going to have a higher protein synthesis rate than people not as active. Secondly you said you take it with sugar which is where the majority of the energy your body would absorb is going to come from. Also the people that were asking about this were asking in the context of a meal replacement, which a protein shake is simply not intended for.

I understand that protein shakes are good for people that weight lift, but what about Pilates?

That's a good question Dina K., I don't know. Pilates is such a different exercise from anything else, almost seems like an extreme stretching session. I can't even imagine being flexible enough to do pilates. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Basically, Pilates is kind of like using your own body to strengthen and lengthen your muscles instead of using weights. I would think that having a protein shake on the days that I do Pilates that it would help my muscles.

Dina, if you think a protein shake would work well for you on your Pilates days, then try it. You might want to try one in a can before springing for a whole big container of protein powder. See whether it makes a difference FOR YOU - everyone is different.

As for meal replacements, well, I vote with the folks who say that a can or bar beats the usual fast-food alternative. Since I've been on phen I've lost my taste for fats anyhow, and there are days when it's either eat in the car, or don't eat at all. Not the norm, thank heavens.

I never, ever, thought I could happily pass up a cheeseburger and fries; but right now that's absolutely the case!

    Good luck!

Slim-Fast makes a soy protein version that, from the nutrition label, looks much better.
    http://www.slim-fast.com/reference_l...ison_chart.pdf

Much less sugar and a much better balance of carbs to protein. I've never tried it -- just found the info on the web.

Something I use for breakfast once in a while is the Kashi brand shakes. They are quite high in fiber, with a decent amount of soy protein. They might not be sold in all areas of the country however.

Trader Joe's soy protein powder is a GREAT deal. It's WAY cheaper than GNC. I add it to oatmeal for breakfast mostly.
