a few weeks or months ago someone posted something about having graves disease. I want to talk with that person if she or he is still out there.
Please respond. I want to know about Rai, raiu. etc. if its safe, are there alternatives and frankly what to tell my doc that insists on having this procedure done.

Hi Babygirl 28,

I'm a lurker who decided to register when I saw no one was answering your post. I have graves disease and had RAI in May 2001. Although it is not the only solution, doctors do tend to recommend it because there are so many side effects of the medication given to try to control the graves disease. I did a lot of research before my rai and found a great site you might want to check out - about.com/ab-thyroid. I would be glad to answer any specific questions you have if you want to email me. I had great success with the rai and feel really good now. I've even managed to lose the twenty pounds I gained after they killed my thyroid with the rai.

Hello! I had a hyperthyroid back in 1991. The doctors told me I had a choice between RAI or surgery. So I had to decide on possible side effects or a Nasty looking scar. So at 20 yrs old I of course didn't want to be scarred so I opted for the RAI. The first dose however did not destroy the thyroid and had to go for another dose. I am on synthroid which is supposed to help act like your thyroid gland. I was on the border of having graves disease prior to RAI. My eyes had already started to bulge (But I have to say that before I had the RAI, I was the skinniest I ever been 108#'s) Well its been 11 yrs since I had the RAI and other than having a hard time with my weight I have to work out twice as hard as someone without a thyroid condition to get my metabalism going. But all in all I feel great.

If you want to email me you can.

I had RAI done also when I was 16---was diagnosed with Graves disease around age 9. They usually end up taking too much of the thyroid away & you are on synthetic thyroid for life--that's the only drawback. It is safe.....much safer than surgery or the meds you take to slow the heart down due to being hyper.
