After reading Princess Grace's post, I am really inspired to learn to run. I have been going to the track now for 4 months and I am up to 3-4 miles with not much effort. I walk the curves and run the straights. I really want to learn to run, I just do not know how to build up my resistence.

Clara, we can start a challenge (and anyone else who wants to). We can set weekly goals on distance and every week add to our running. I bet that Kelik and Princess Grace would help us with pointers.

I will see what info I can find on the net for learning to run.

What do you think?

I would like to be in this too. I don't have a track though to run on. How would I know how long I've run?

THere are a couple of ways to figure out the distance you have ran. One way is to take your car out in your neighborohood (assuming you live in one) and drive out a course you would take. While driving this course use your odometer to measure the distance. Or you could find your local High school and see if you are allowed to go there. It is public property and I know that we are allowed on the track at the high school I went to. Or you can get one of those little devices that measures how far you have walked and attach that to your belt. Any of these ideas will work.

P.S. the tracks at the school are much better to run on. The stuff the track is made of is very easy on your feet and won't hurt you as much.

Or you could be like me and have a treadmill that shows you the distance you have walked everyday.

brandibit - Shannon is right about the school track. I know ours is open to the public. Also -I have a membership at the YMCA in my town, and it has a track that is open to the public too...you don't have to me a member to use it.

I like this idea. I currently run about two of the five miles I do when exercising. It really hasn't been getting much easier for me. I think because I am not consistent with it. Oh, and I second the track thing if you can find one. My shin splint is slowly betting better. I have a very good pair of nike air walks, but I think I need a good pair of running shoes. Man, it really is irritating getting old.

How long do you have to be a walker before you start running? I am walking 1.5 miles a day. But I really want to run. I am trying to build up to running.

Hey guys. Right off the top of my head I cannot remember the url, but if you go to your search engine and type in something like training for a 5K or learn to run or something similiar there are some great sites that teach you everything you need to know from distance to shoes to breathing and everything in between!

BY the way a 5K is like a 3.2 mile run. Maybe we could make that a challenge-to work up to a 5K.!!!

Hey Guys!!

I did a search like Luv suggested and I found this website:

http://www.nyrrc.org/divisions/training/beginner.htm

It actually has a 10 week challenge program. The goal after 10 weeks is to be able to run non-stop for 20 minutes. It seems to have alot of information and outlines exactly what to every week for 10 weeks. Maybe we could do something like this as a challenge. It would also help us if we are in any other challenges to lose weight.

The book that the reference to on the website
"The Runners Handbook" is on www.booksamillion.com for only $13.37. May find it on ebay cheeper. Also see it on www.amazon.com used for like $5

Princess or Kelik, will you look at this website when you get a chance and tell us if this sounds like a good program to get started with?

Thanks,

Brandi

Wendee, I want to run more than anything. I don't know if I posted it but I did something funky to my foot and haven't been able to run in over a week. The doctor did a x-ray and couldn't see any brakes but its really swollen and hurts like heck. The doctor told me that I shouldn't run for a month, two weeks atleast. I can still do the stationary bike for cardio but tried the eple ? machine and it hurt to much. I really hate this because I was just getting where could keep up with the class and then messed up my ankle.

I want to do the challenge but I'll have to use an alternate form of cardio for now. Then I'll start running again but take it slow. I have a workout buddy who is 20 years younger than I am and she will be running circles around me.

My goal is to build my stamina where when I run I enjoy it. I always feel good after I finish but its really hard. I don't breath right, and probably run the wrong way. ( I know thats what happened to my foot).

If you get a challenge going I'm in even if I have to go slow I want to do it.

Thanks for thinking about me Wendee .
Are we there yet ???????????

Hi Paula/Clara,

I wonder if you may have a meta-tarsal stress fracture. That sometimes doesn't show up on the x-rays for a few weeks. Monitor it and go back to the doctor if it doesn't get better -- what they'll see on the x-ray (or MRI) is all the scar tissue building up. Anyway the stress fractures are really common if there is repetitive pressure (like marching/hiking/running/jogging)on the feet. Anyway, good luck! My son got one of these when he was in Marine Boot Camp and what a hassle it was. Hope you're better soon.

Jeff, I know exactly what you mean about getting older. In my mind I'm still 20 even though I know I'm not. I sometimes think I feel better today thah I did than.
I was doing pretty good keeping up with the 20 year olds in workout class. Then something happens to remind me I'm not as young as I use to be and to take things slower. (at least I'm that way)
Are we there yet ???????????
