Yep,phen and a low cal diet can sometimes backfire at the "Elimination Station!" I learned about fiber initially from doing weight watchers, becuase the way the original points plan was set up, the more fiber something had, the less points. I read up on fiber and discovered all the benefits to general health, not to mention weight loss, reduction of water retention and most importantly REGULARITY! I can give a full-blown disertation on the benefits of fiber, but that's another post! The goal is to get 25-35 grams of fiber a day....for one day, write down the fiber in what you eat, you'd be surprised at how little you get. I aim for breads that are no less than 2, but usually 5 gms a slice. Natural Ovens makes a great whole wheat and several others that have 5 grams a slice. For cereals, oatmeal doesn't really cut it for me, bran flakes have 5 gms, raisin bran has 7-8 depending on the brand and kashi cereals have 5-10 depending on the one you pick. (my personal fav is Kashi Good Friends Cinna Raisin, like a really crunchy cinnamony raisin bran with 10 gms of fiber!) all are low fat. Of course, fresh fruits and veggies should be at the top of anyones list. Most fresh fruits have 2-4 grams each and veggies too...not to mention the vitamins and minerals. Rye crisp crackers are very tasty with some low fat laughing cow cheese and high in fiber for a cheese and cracker fix. I like to dip my raw veggies in hummus for some added fiber from the chickpeas, plus some healthy fat. And of course, let's not forget beans!!! Black beans have some 13 g of fiber in a 1/2 cup. I like to sprinkle them on a salad for some "substance" instead of meat..I also use them as a filler for tacos and burritos (I cut the ground beef or turkey in 1/2 of what I need and fill in the rest with black beans). I make a mean white bean soup. I'll post some recipes in the mornin, since I gotta go watch hockey! Hope this was a good starter...oh, btw, speaking of starting, Rome was not built in a day, so do not attempt to go from 0-25gms a day...your intestines take time to build the enzymes to digest fiber without the "musical" side effects, so take is slow, over several days-weeks...you're family will thank you!
