    Question

I have had a bad headache for like 5 days. Now I have a lump on the back of my head that feels like I have been hit with a baseball bat (couldn't even sleep w/ head touching pillow last night!). If my anatomy class serves my memory right, I would say its in the occipital region, most probably an enlarged lymph node, my question is...
What do I need to do for it? I really hate going to the doctor if it is something that might just go away on its own. What should I take for it?
    I'm open for suggestions!

    Send me a bill...

    Deana ouch!

Deana....girl, what's going on with that head of yours? Let me see if I can help in any way. Remember now, GI is my specialty, so bear with me here. First of all.....is there any redness at the site? This would rule out any possibility of it being an "infected" hair follicle. I have seen this before, and they can be quiet large and painful. My suggestion would be warm compresses to the site....Ibuprofen for pain (anti-inflammatory). It is not the "norm" to have headaches for 5 days straight. Please don't hesitate seeing a physician. Let me know how you are doing......Trip

I agree with triplet dont hesitate to see a doctor. It could possibly just be an infected hair or it could be a insect bite such as a spider. My mom had a spider bite on the back of her shoulder one time that was so sore she couldnt hardly stand it. Just incase it would be better to see a doctor.
I just want out of the 200 weight range.

Well my specialty is Labor and Delivery so it's kind of the wrong end for me . I would say at least call your Dr's office and talk to his nurse and see if they want to see you. It sounds like something worth looking into just to be safe. Are you having any visual problems...dizziness, spots, blurry, etc? Any nausea or vomiting? I was going to say it could be an enlarged lymph node that is causing pressure somewhere but if it's the occipital region you don't have any lymph nodes there...not that you could feel anyway. Did you hit your head? I would take the Ibuprofen like Trip suggested for pain and inflammation and call your Dr. You can take 800 mg's every 8 hours. Anytime you have an ongoing headache like that it needs to be checked. Let us know how it turns out. I'd be interested to know what it is. Hope you feel better soon!

Clarifying myself....you have lymph nodes that you can feel at the base of your skull on the back of the neck at the hairline....i am taking it that it is more up in your hair on the upper back of your head though. Just wanted to make myself clear!

Thanks everyone. I went ahead and went to the doc. I really hate going! But I needed some relief.
Apparently the muscle that is attached to my skull (right at the hairline, where that curvature or protrubance (sp) is) is inflammed for some reason, he gave me a steroid shot (in the hip-that's what I dreaded about going to the doc-but it wasn't that bad)and some anti-inflammatory med and then something for the headache.
SO, I feel better this a.m. but the place is still real sore, its weird. I mean I kept thinking to myself if I hit my head on anything, but surely I would remember getting a bump on my head...?
Oh well, thank you guys for responding to me, I knew I needed to see a doc, I guess I was hoping
someone would say "ah-that's nothing to worry about just leave it alone" But I knew better.

    Thanks again.
You may send the consultation bills to....

Sorry I am late Deana! I am catching up-glad you went to the Doc-I don't fool around with chronic headaches-my dad died of an aneurysm and the one symptom he had prior to it was really bad headaches at the base of his neck-unfortunately, most don't even get that type of warning sign-better safe than sorry!

That's interesting. Glad you are feeling better. Wonder how that happened? You should be back to your old self soon after that steroid shot. Thanks for letting us know.
