    Question

Hi all. Anyone on Phentermine & Prozac? Any thoughts? My doctor says it's safe, I've been on Prozac for 3-4 years, and was put on Phentermine in Oct. I was 198 and now am 164. Thanks.

In my prescription book I went and looked up our Phen to see what the do's and dont's were and it says..."Use of it within 14 days of a monoamine oxidase (MOA), can result in high blood pressure and other side effects"...Prozac is in that catagory. I was on Prozac 5 years ago and told my doctor of my history. He said as long as I wasnt on it now there shouldnt be any problems. I would get a second opinion before taking them both any further. The Prozac can actually help with a compulsive eating disorder any way. Check it out, ok? Let me know.

    Cool

Way to go Buddiboots! People should really research the drugs they're taking. I don't want to sound like I'm bashing all physicians, but some of them need to review their PDR. You shouldn't take phentermine if you've taken a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI) in the last 14 days (because it takes about 14 days for the drug to completely leave your system). Prozac (fluoxetine) is a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI). It can take up to 5 weeks to get an SSRI drug out of your system. Doesn't it seem like it would be worse to take Prozac with phentermine than an MAOI with phentermine? Furthermore, the PDR says, "The safety and efficacy of combination therapy with phentermine and any other drug for weight loss, including.........fluoxetine......, have not been established. Therefore, coadministration of these drug products for weight loss is not recommended". Maybe some doctors rationalize this by explaining how both drugs are used for treating two different illnesses.......Whatever! I'll go with what their book says! There are a lot of doctors that will prescribe both drugs togather. Maybe they know something that others don't. My doctor won't prescribe both. I guess you can go with what your doctor says, or get a second and third opinion.
