My sister lives in Davenport near Lakeland..what kind of info do you need? She usually gets to Lakeland
about 3 x a week as her job calls for it.
Live, Laugh and Love every day
I need someone to look for articles from the Lakeland Ledger on Micro Film at the library concerning a school that was closed for fraud that happened back in 1995. I think I know the month but it could take more than looking through just one month.
Like I said, I wouldn't ask but I just got a letter from the Dept of Ed (18 years later) telling me they are going to garnish my wages for $12000 for a student loan I KNOW I paid!!
WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE SCHOOL?
Well the mother company was Flamingo Beauty College but the name on the papers I have is Lakeland Beauty College and everywhere I've called has it listed as Lakeland Beauty School. It closed in June of 1995 and the owners name was Jimmy Nevius.
I FOUND THIS BUT ITS FROM A SCHOOL IN ILLINOIS (IM STILL LOOKING)
Civil Actions
Flamingo Beauty Colleges (FBC)
Springfield, Illinois
Jimmy Nevius, owner
The U.S. Attorney's office in Springfield, Illinois, filed a civil complaint against Jimmy Nevius under the False Claims
Act, charging failure to properly disburse student financial assistance funds. An OIG investigation developed evidence
that FBC officials cashed student loan checks to which neither the school nor the students were entitled because the
students did not complete the required number of hours of instruction. The students were entitled to the first of two
student loan disbursements upon starting school, but were not entitled to the second disbursement until they completed
the required hours. FBC failed to refund legitimate student loan funds on behalf of the students who withdrew from the
school before FBC had earned all the student loans.
Nevius and FBC are alleged to have improperly retained approximately $53,000 in student loans and grants by certifying
15 students and falsely claiming that they were enrolled at the school and that they had either a high school diploma or
general equivalency degree or had been administered an ability-to-benefit test by an independent tester. We found that
in fact an FBC employee administered the test, thus making the students ineligible to receive student aid funds.
The complaint states that Nevius and FBC were unjustly enriched by obtaining ineligible loan disbursements totaling
approximately $38,000 and by failing to refund approximately $52,000 in unearned student loan and grant funds. Under
the False Claims Act, the court may grant judgment for treble damages plus civil penalties of $5,000 to $10,000 for each
false claim. The total claim could be as high as $1 million.

I have all of the info off of the internet. I've been researching this for 6 months. I've called every # that you can imagine when it comes to investigation from the ED OIG in Washington DC to the Department of Regulation in Florida. No one keeps records for this long it seems. Yet, they want me to produce some sort of record proving I paid. How stupid is that?
Anyhow, I really appreciate you looking online but I thought I would let you know that I've exhausted just about every form of the words Flamingo, Lakeland, Beauty, School and College....not to mention student loan, fraud, embezzlement and on and on. I've hit nothing but brick walls EXCEPT for with the library. And they do have records and my mother says it is in there because she read it when it happened. I just have to find someone willing to go look for it.
Good LUck Dear
