This text is from a county emergency manager out in the western part of North Dakota state after the recent snow storm.

WEATHER BULLETIN

Up here in the Northern Plains we just recovered from a Historic event--- may I even say a "Weather Event" of "Biblical Proportions" --- with a historic blizzard of up to 44" inches of snow and winds to 90 MPH that broke trees in half, knocked down utility poles, stranded hundreds of motorists in lethal snow banks, closed ALL roads, isolated scores of communities and cut power to 10's of thousands.

FYI:

George Bush did not come.

FEMA did nothing.

No one howled for the government.

No one blamed the government.

No one even uttered an expletive on TV.

Jackson or Al Sharpton did not visit.

Our Mayor's ! did not blame Bush or anyone else.

Our Governor did not blame Bush or anyone else either

CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX, or NBC did not visit - or report on this category 5 snow storm nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards.

No one asked for a FEMA Trailer House.

No one looted.

Nobody - I mean Nobody demanded the government do something.

Nobody expected the government to do anything either.

No Larry King, No Bill O'Rielly, No Oprah, No Chris Mathews and No Geraldo Rivera.

No Shaun Penn, No Barbara Striesand, No Hollywood types to be found.

And

Nope, we just melted the snow for water.

Sent out caravans of SUV's to pluck people out of snow engulfed cars.

The truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks and didn't ask for a penny.

Local restaurants made food, and the police and fire departments delivered it to the snow bound families.

Families
took in the stranded people - total strangers.

We Fired up wood stoves, broke out coal oil lanterns or Coleman lanterns.

We put on an extra layers of clothes because up here it is "Work or Die".

We did not wait for some affirmative action government to get us out of a mess created by being immobilized by a welfare program that trades votes for 'sittin at home' checks.

Even though a Category "5" blizzard of this scale has never fallen this early, we know it can happen and how to deal with it ourselves.

"In my many travels, I have noticed that once one ! gets north of about 48 degrees North Latitude, 90% of the world's social problems evaporate."

It does seem that way, at least to me.

I hope this gets passed on..

Maybe ... SOME people will get the message .. The world does Not owe you a living.

hmm.. after the snow melted, did everyone have houses to go home to?

Are their cars rusted out from the corrosive salt water (oh wait.. snow doesn't do that, does it?)

Are they at risk for Hepatitis (and other diseases) from swimming in human feces resulting from septic tanks that have come to the surface?

How many grocery stores are still standing within a 100 mile radius?

How many millions of square yards of debris did the town band together and clean up after the snow melted?

How many hospitals remain open or are able to open after the storm? all of them? or none of them, like after "other category 5 storms?"

How many thousands of people lost their lives during this terrible storm?

Are the roads a crumbled, impassable mess underneath all the snow or can they simply plow it and go along their merry way?

Give me a break.

I posted this for all to form their own viewpoint, and your opinion is certainly true from your own experience, being from Gulfport, Ms, I'm sorry for your trials & tribulations.

Everyone should be ready to evacuate. Therefore, nobody ends up in feces contaminated water and all of the above. If you have insurance on your home, you can and will rebuild, if not, why not? I am a southern miss girl too and have family on the coast of Miss. My real problem is New Orleans. For all of you who live north and in other states, read the fine print, the news blows it out of proportion. New Orleans failed itself on the levee's which have been bad for 30+ years (I graduated HS there). It wasn't "Katrina" it was the "levee", they would have sustained Katrina better than Mississippi, much better in fact, than 1 1/2 hours north to Hattiesburg MS which sustained 112 mph winds itself & caused a major catastrophe, we thought we were "a little safer" further north. My heart goes out to all who were affected in one way or another but New Orleans definately needs a new mayor!!!!! And New Orleans needs to learn to take care of themselves like Mississippi did. Waveland, MS and Bay St. Louis, MS both were wiped off the map for goodness sakes! And if you go there, people are taking care of things without waiting on anybody!And, yes, some are STILL in tents. I feel FEMA is ok to distribute the trailers, but I do have a problem with these people being able to purchase these after 18mo for 5% on the dollar. These need to go to a lot in Somewhere, USA and sit until the next devastation, even in snowbound communities!

I agree, people should evacuate, but not everyone did. My brother works at the Biloxi Fire Department. Every member of the FD had to swim in the 'feces contaminated water' because they arent allowed to evacuate and the station was completely underwater (over 1 mile inland).

At least half a dozen of them contracted a flesh eating bacteria from being exposed to the conditions directly after.

I wont even go into the dozens of cases of people I know personally who DID evacuate, but suffered from impetigo, severe respiratory disorders, dysentery and tetany *after* they returned home.
