Hey all, I am really asking for your prayers.
I have been asked by the company I work for to volunteer to help out as an EMT and with search and recovery in the Mississippi area. I will most likely be gone for 2 weeks and will be going with 2 mechanics from the place I work for so I will not be going alone. I am over joyed to be going because I feel I need to do something. Please keep me in your prayers along with the two others I will be going with. The conditions we will be living in are unknown at this time but will most likely be less then favorable. God will go with us to protect us from harm. I do have a cel phone, but do not know if I will be able to even use it. I will find out more about this in the near future and let you know exactly where I will be. However, do not just pray for me as I have a home and family to come back to. Pray for all of those who have nothing. |

My thoughts and prayers go out to you and the victims. God bless you.
My son is interested in becoming an EMT, but we don't have any idea as to where he can go to school. |

Hye Luna, I was thinking about you just the other day girl.
This is wonderful what you're doing (with the other two also). Prayers will be going up everyday for you and your co workers and everyone affected by Katrina. Hugs Missus

What a wonderful thing to do ... God bless you for being so thoughtful and loving. Please be careful, and take our prayers with you -- to all the people whose lives you will touch -- but especially for your safe return.

heaven sent- here is an entry of an online journal from an emt who lives in lake charles, LA and just returned from a two day stay in the superdome where he was flown in to help out. i know you are going to MS but you have to be careful any where you are going.
"Back from New Orleans. I just spent two days at the Superdome. Wednesday evening they flew me and six others to the dome not knowing when we'd be coming back. To be honest, hell on Earth would be an understatement. Here's the story... When we first flew in they brought us in the Superdome and there was a makeshift ER set up. Within two hours we treated four gunshot wounds and two stabbings and the riots were getting worse. Finally the National Guard moved all our supplies to the basketball arena. As soon as they were done it filled up just like the dome so it was no help. Not five minutes after moving in there two people were murdered twenty feet from us. I would say maybe 15 women were raped Wednesday night. There would be huge fights right by our area, someone would get stabbed or shot, and they would drag them in to us. We treated at least six National Guardsmen who were shot. It was hell in there. ....NONE OF THIS HAS BEEN SHOWN ON THE NEWS.... We delivered three babies right inside the basketball arena. The sniper on the roof rumor is completely true. At one point yesterday afternoon there were three shots fired at us and we retreated to a back hallway where we were escorted to a Blackhawk helicopter and flown to another ****hole....The evacuee checkpoint at I-10 and Causeway. Four hours later I hitched a ride on an ambulance to Lafayette and drove home. It was like being dropped into a war for two days in a city you're very familiar with. It was the worst smelling place you could ever fathom, over 100 degrees, and everything was either wet or pissed on. You couldn't pay me enough to go anywhere near that city right now. It's the first time I've ever been shot at and hopefully the last. They'll shoot and spit at you and you too haven't slept or eaten in days and are there to help them. Then there's the lady that floated up to the dome on a dead body. The bodies are everywhere. All I'm saying is this, all the rumors are true and more. The news hasn't shown half of what's going on. I'm just glad all of you made it out ok and are safe. If there is anything me or my family can do for any of you please let me know. Best wishes." |

Hey don't scold me if I sound "Selfish" But PLEASE BRING LOTS OF FIRST AIDS AND VITAMINS ALONG WITH YOU! Cos if water is contaminated and the situations could be worse than what we could handle, you have to take care of your health before helping others. Ask for a jab against some common disease if necessary... God will bless you and keep you... Do keep us posted... Cheers!

Hi,
I know this is a little late, but I think it's probably understood rather easily. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I am a resident of Mississippi. I live about 10 miles north and east of Biloxi. I also happened to be very lucky in the storm while people down the street lost everything. One thing, no matter how much damage you suffer, is that everyone suffers. No utilities. Hellish conditions. No fuel. No food. No water. No medical facilities or medicines. No communication. Roads that can't be used. The overall response to Katrina was slow from a government's standpoint. To the government I would phrase it not "slow" but painstaking and excruciating. However, from normal citizens such as you who came to the area and from those who volunteered, your response was wonderful. It was, to us, an act of God. You became our link to stability, sanity, security, and comfort. Mississippi became nothing like the riotous, turbulent, and violent area that became New Orleans. Notice, though, I said became... not was. I hope this is understood fairly well and taken in manner in which it was given. It is hard for us to take the assumption that "we," meaning the residents of my state, might be confused or likened to the lawlessness of New Orleans. That you worry about one's safety (as far as personal safety) smarts, especially at such a time. The people, the land, the economy, the infrastructure, indeed our very society was ripped apart by forces beyond our control. But our saving grace, as opposed to New Orleans' desparation, is that despite all that was torn apart and the loss of our society enabled a very gracious people to find what most in New Orleans probably could not... We found community in it's purest form. We found neighbor helping neighbor or just person in need that you came across. If I had water, I gave water.... even though I didn't have much water. If I needed food and they had food, they gave me food whether they have enough or not. I think it's important to realize, especially with Rita looming, that disaster brings out the best and the worst in people. One expert termed it, they bring out the "real" you. Which person would it bring out in you if you were here. People in Texas.. Which person will you let it bring out in you? I hope and pray that the lessons of Katrina were well learned. I listen and read about the preparations, and I think that they probably have been.... for now. It will be important that we not let the lessons in preparedness and response be forgotten. It is crucial that we not let the lessons we learn of humanity not be forgotten. Heaven Sent, from a greatful citizen of the Gulf Coast, I thank you for your aid during our crisis. If you volunteered time, money, effort, or blood for this crisis, you have my utmost esteem and gratitude. Not only mine, but from my community. If you drive down a Mississippi road, you'll see flags flying or hanging from rubble that used to be a home. You will see signs painted on plywood "Hot food, home open to all." You will see signs painted on tin that simply, and effectively say, "Thank You!" From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. When we needed... it wasn't the government who we could depend on. It was our community. It was our first responders. It was our neighbors. It was the people in the next community. It was the people in the next state. It was the people in the next region.. It was you and it was I who came to the call. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
