I also had the frustration that I wanted my primary care doctor to prescribe me phentermine. He basically told me that he wouldn't chart our conversation.
So I searched and finally found a "Preventive Health" Clinic that would prescribe phentermine but it is 4 hour drive for me. I sent all the information to my doctor on the "Preventive Health" clinic -- told him that I had an appointment -- asked him once again why he wouldn't help me.
I got a letter from him yesterday saying that he reviewed the information that I had sent and agreed to prescribe me phentermine if my BMI was at least 27 (whereas the clinic will prescribe it if your BMI is over 25) and had any obesity-related health risk factors including heart disease, colon cancer, breast cancer, endometrial cancer, diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, gall bladder disease, and osteoarthritis. He also stated he would take into account my bone structure -- I am small framed and tall so the BMI doesn't give a true reflection of the weight I carry.....
He said the main reason he would monitor me is that so many people have health complications directly linked to losing the weight that might not be "caught" if I went to a clinic like this.
So my advice is if you are determined -- don't give up -- there are doctors out there that will listen to you. He knows I am serious about taking phentermine, that I have done my research, and he would rather be in control of my weight loss than have to fix any complications!!!!
