My general practice doctor is ASAF R QADEER, located in Houston, TX. He has prescribed phentermine for me as long as my bp was good and he likes for me to lose at least 8 - 10lbs each month. He just charges me a regular office visit, which is about $50 I believe.

Hi, I am from the Houston area also and might give Dr. Qadeer a call. The pills on the internet are just too much, $99. Does he write you a prescription? How much do the pills cost you? Do you just go in and ask him if he can prescribe you the phen? Any info you can give me would be helpful, Thanks!

I see a doctor in Baltimore and he prescribes my phen so I just need to get the prescription filled - not covered by insurance though - but less than on the internet. He just wrote a book about his "program" and I just bought a copy - cool to think I have a famous doctor! It's called Turn Off the Hunger Switch. At the end of the book, he lists doctors around the country that follow similar programs so I would think they'd prescribe phen...

Hi, I've been away from the board for some time now, so sorry about the delayed response. My doctor is not mainly a diet doctor per se, I have seen him for a number of reasons. However, when I did go in, we talked about my weight, and he was fine with giving me a prescription. He only gives a one month prescription, and he likes to see you lose at least 10 lbs. a month. He will usually give them to you for 3 to 4 months at a time, then he suggestes waiting for a while (which is a good idea because they stop working after that time period anyway). I'm sure that as long as your health it good and your blood pressure is within a good range, that he will not have a problem writing you out a prescription.

I have also read this book, Turn off the Hunger Switch. It makes a lot of sense, however, my only concern is that the author/doctor states that phentermine increases the level of dopamine and norepinephrine chemicals in the brain, whereas every other bit of information that I have ever found regarding phentermine suggests that phentermine increases seratonin. I have never read anywhere else (other than his book) that it increases the other chemicals.

Therefore, if phentermine does increase seratonin rather than the other chemicals, and is used with another SSRI (prozac, zoloft, celexa, paxil, effexor), you could be at risk of seratonin syndrome, which can be as bad as the phen-fen solution used years ago.

I have stopped taking phentermine because I am on celexa for depression. However, my doctor will be adding wellbutrin to help me lose weigth. Wellbutrin has been proven to increase dopamine and norepinephrine chemical levels, and is safe and often used with other SSRI's. The main reason that doctors add Wellbutrin is to help with the weight gain that sometimes occurs when taking an SSRI for depression.

Which SSRI has the doctor put you on, and what dosage?

I'm on Effexor XR 37.5 mg.

I may be wrong, but I understood that fenfluramine was what increased serotonin, not phentermine.
