Default 10 in 10 Challenge
Welcome to the 10 in 10 Challenge!

Beginning January 7, 2008 we will begin our 10 in 10 Challenge.
I don't want to take credit for this idea though. I signed up for the INShape Indiana 10 in 10 challenge which encourages Hoosiers (us crazy Indiana people) to lose 10 pounds in 10 weeks through a combination of sound nutrition and physical activity. Hoosiers are some of the most obese people in the nation, ranking at a tie for 8th place with South Carolina.

Here are the top 10 states:
1. Mississippi
2. Alabama
3. West Virginia
4. Louisiana
5. Kentucky
6. Tennessee
7. Arkansas
8. Indiana, South Carolina
10. Texas

Is your state listed? Don't think you're off the hook even if your state isn't one of the top 10. The rate for obesity in America just keeps going up, up, up! Not one single state went down in the last review. An estimated 130 million U.S. citizens, or 64%, are overweight or obese.

You are in control!

Over the next 10 weeks they will provide me with weekly emails with healthy eating tips, tips to increase physical activity, and workplace wellness ideas. I will pick out the stuff you can benefit from, maybe add some of my own tidbits that I've picked up along the way, and come up with a weekly challenge. Your weekly challenges may be to drink more water, exercise more, or increase your consumption of a certain type of food (probably not gonna be Cheetos though...)

We will have two main goals of this challenge.
Ready for 'em?
They're kinda crazy...

Goal #1 -- Move more

are you with me so far?

Goal #2 -- Eat better

That's it.
Can you handle that?
We're gonna move more and eat better and lose *at least* 10 pounds in 10 weeks. Sound good?

All I want from you before this challenge officially begins on January 7 is your starting weight. I will post our progress weekly as we go along. Our weigh-ins will be on Friday or Saturday, whichever is best for you.

I will post the weekly weight loss chart on Sundays, new challenges on Mondays.

Got that?
This is your schedule for the next 10 weeks:
  • weigh in Friday or Saturday
  • weight loss chart goes up on Sunday
  • new challenge Monday

Unfortunately what this means is that you don't have a whole week before your first weigh in. So get me your starting weight asap and let's get to movin' more and eatin' better!

this is a great idea rather you thought it up or not... I am already part of a challange but this is a great idea to go along with the statewide challanges...

Hi y'all. UGH!

I love this forum, but I wish y'all lived nearby. That way you could have come over and kicked my butt over the past 2 or 3 months while I was being a deadbeat. I've gone from my goal weight of 117 to a starting weight in this challenge of 128!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm in. Not that I don't like buying new clothes as I'm sure you all already know, but I REFUSE to buy new clothes in a bigger size.

Looking forward to being back!!!

Well Timi, if you stick with us hopefully you'll be within one pound of your goal weight by the time we're done! Glad you're back.

Chester, glad you're here!

Gottadothis, you're more than welcome to come hang out if youd like. We'd love to have you.

Well I just got my first email about the 10 pounds in 10 weeks challenge from the state. It basically said that before you begin, it’s important for you to get an idea of a healthy personal body weight. The CDC suggests using the Body Mass Index (BMI) for making this determination.
Here is the cdc website to determine your BMI.
http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/

They also show how to do a quick estimate of calorie needs:
Please note that this is an estimate of calorie needs. It does not take into account age, gender, metabolic rate, or body fat percentage. It is not an exact calculation, rather it is to be used as a ball park figure.

If you are very active, multiply your current weight (in pounds) by 17
If you are moderately active, multiply your current weight (in pounds) by 15
If you are inactive, multiply your current weight (in pounds) by 13
This estimate is the amount of calories you will need to maintain your weight. To lose weight, deduct between 250 and 500 calories from this number. This will be your calorie goal.

So I'm starting this at 151.
151 x 15 (moderately active) = 2265 to maintain my current weight
2265 - 500 = 1765 would be my calorie goal.

(wow, too bad I haven't been sticking to that number or less for the last month or so...had I been sticking to that I wouldn't be where I am now. )

Have a great evening!

Move more...eat better...I can handle that. I'm in.

Choco - I like the caloric estimate...just remember to change it every time your weight changes. Your caloric needs change as your weight goes down and that messes up a lot of people.

Timi - Welcome back! I ditto your sentiment about living closer. Can you imagine how fit we'd all be if we could work out together too?

My starting weight is 154lbs...again.

Ok y'all, this isn't starting out pretty!

I bought the Arbonne weight loss plan stuff at Christmas time and decided to use it today. As hubby was making a devine smelling omelet I scooped, shook and drank my mildly unpleasant smelling "chocolate" (notice the quotation marks) drink that at 120 calories is supposed to "fill me up". Then hubby offered me some of his omelet. I only asked for a couple of bites, so when I finished it I was still HUNGRY!!! So I just got finished eating way too many sesame crackers. UGH! Guess I'll try again at lunchtime huh.........

As far a exercise today??? Well. Ummmm. We talked about driving into the city and going to what is being called a "starving artist" art sale today. No painting over $59.00. It just sounds way too good to be true, don't ya think???

Good morning.

Timi, I have been having a hard time with my calories in the past week even on phen. I am trying to burn 3500 calories this week in exercise.

Welcome Shirlee! Wow, 500 calories is not much, but I'll bet you drop a lot of weight fast. This is good since you are new to phen and it is working at its maximum.

TOM is due today. I need to be in the 141-142 range this week so I can go back to the Doc. Hopefully, with getting rid of a couple of pounds of water weight and the increase in exercise I can get there. Also, today is the last day of Hubby's vacation so I am going to start going to be no late than 10PM. I have really gotten into a bad habit of staying up to 1-2 and sleeping until 8 in the last month. I want to start getting up with Hubby at 5.

It is beautiful weather here today. Quite windy, but I plan to do some heavy duty outside work in a grove of trees.

Hvae a great day.

Hey Choco I'd like to join in the fun too!! I'll be gone from the 10th-14th so probably won't be able to fully jump in until the 16th -- got lots to do between now & Thurs when I leave at 4 am, but I'll try to check in between now and then. And then I'm thinking I'll have a lot of catching up to do on the 15th (at work and home). I'm planning to take my lap top with me so I'll at least try to keep up with everyone. (Going to Tacoma to help take care of my Mom who is recouping from surgery.)

Starting weight? ugh. Do I have to? OK, since everyone else is... 194.

Hi Timi! Nice to see you back! (I know, I'm one to talk...) I know it doesn't make you feel any better, but you still look great!

Hi LZ, Lovin and everyone else!

Gotta get goin, lots of laundry to do...

Mary
