October 27th, 2008, 02:01 AM
Hey everyone! This weeks one week challenge will focus on exercise...movement that gets your heart rate up. This challenge will be to have at least 3 days of 20 minute exercise sessions. If you do more than that, great and if you meet the challenge, that's just as great too. i need to start slowly or else I will get discouraged.

Who wants to join me in this challenge?? Also, for those who did the one week water challenge, remember to keep that up too. :) little by little we will be changing our patterns to make this weight loss stick for GOOD.

During the week, please share what's working for you...when you exercise, what you are doing, etc....also what's not working and we can help problem solve for you as well.

Backtome...I'm really excited about this challenge. I did good all week with the water and now its time to step it up. I can tell that my weight loss has slowed down. I will be posting what I did for exercise later on tonight.

Good luck everyone!

I'm in! I stopped phen about 3 weeks ago, but never started to workout or watch portions. I am very lucky I only went up a couple pounds! I downloaded the workout for November from cookinglight.com and will start that today. (lower body and inclined cardio on elipt or treadmill) I will do my weights on MWF, and will do cardio everyday. What i would LIKE to do is 30 min od elipt and 30 min of inclined treadmill workout 5x a week. We'll see. Once I get to the gym, I can workout forever on the elipt. It;s just the getting there.
Don't know what the water challenge was, but I have been drinking water a lot more latley, which is HUGE for me. I crave water now. I aim for 10 glasses a day, and usually get at least 6. Not bad considering I never really drank any.
Looking forward to sweatin!

OK guys this is what I did.

20 minutes Kettelbells (awesome for cardio workout, muscle building, and fat burning) Check them out.....they have them at target with an instructional DVD.

10 minutes stomach crunches

Also I have already drank 50 oz of water so 34 more to go!

**last weeks challange was to drink half of your body weight in water.

I walked my 2 miles in 32 minutes today. It was nice so I walked outside, my only mistake was wearing my Dr. Scholl's twist 2 sandals without the mini socks. They give my legs a great workout, but I got blisters on the sides of my feet where they rubbed. Now I will have to wear regular walking shoes WITH SOCKS to walk, so much for no white feet LOL. I hate close toed shoes of any kind!

Well I did it today...Yipee this is a big milestone as i hate exercising but once i get going i cant stop. I did it last year and was going to the gym literally everyday and working on the ecliptic and i lost over 25 lbs just doing that, but i stopped and its so hard getting back to that but i am ready. I think the 3 day thing is something i can live with and going everyday is not practical for me as i know i wont keep it up but i am taking the stairs at work which i never used to do even to go up one floor lol...talk about lazy. Boy I went to the marina and walked for bout 45 minutes. I didnt break a sweat tho so ill do this this week and see how i can build up to increase my heart rate. it gonna take some time tho...thanks for this challenge.

I'm in too. Will we be posting our weight loss here through the week? And does it finish on Monday of next week? Game on!!Yup. I will post a new challenge next week. I'm up for any ideas. We can build on the exercise this week or we can continue the 3 times a week for at least 20 minutes or we can move that up to 30.

I think it's awesome that you are taking the stairs. every.little.bit.helps. It's getting into that habit. I like the 3 days a week for now too otherwise I wouldn't be able to meet the challenge due to family stuff (I have younger kids)

the only problem is i cant get motivated into the exercise...so i need help, will take any advice on how to start a program and stick with it that's fantastic! what works for me is to start slow and make goals that I can actually achieve and that are realistic.

I got a iPhone and I downloaded this cool app that uses GPS to keep track of the route you walk, the distance, how fast you went, and ave per hour. I can't wait to use it!

I am so excited to see so many joining this week's challenge! We can do this!!!

I do have to admit I am discouraged. I have given up pasteries, ice cream, fast food, potatoes, diet soda, and I weighted myself today after one week...and NOTHING. NOT EVEN AN OUNCE. I guess be happy I didn't gain??? *sigh* I am hoping the exercise helps my body to realize it's okay to let go of the FAT. my metabolism is so screwed.

Oh and like tchrmomy said, the challenge last week was to drink, everyday, half your weight in ounces. So still focus on that as well as slowly adding in some physical activity. We are trying to build up to do *everything* *all the time* without going overboard to begin with...cuz I can't or else I will get WAY more discouraged!! know what I mean?

Ok, so here's a question - movement is movement, so does my job count? I am a pharma rep in New York, right outside of Manhattan, and do a LOT of walking from meters to offices to hospitals and everywhere in between. Is that "exercise"? Probably not, since I have been doing that for quite some time, right? I'm not looking to jip myself of other forms of exercise, it's just a question I have. :)

I'd say it doesn't count because in order to lose weight we have to increase physical activity...plus often we have to change up the workout to not let our bodies get used to one type of routine.

I worked out with weights, did 100 standing crunches (I can't do laying down ones, cause my lower abs are now my boobs), lost count on squats. Walked 1 mile at a 10 incline and 2 miles alternating the incline. 2 1/2 hours I worked out!

cad286 do you have pedometer? Your walking counts towards the 10.000 steps you are supposed to take a day.

That's fantastic Glenna! and what a great idea about the pedometer! if you are not meeting 10,000 steps then that can certainly be your goal to reach!

What a good idea (pedometer). I hadn't thought of that, nor did I know that we are supposed to take 10K steps in a day!! You'd think that was a lot, but I guess not. I'm sure I do WELL over that amount just working through the day!

Glenna, I saw that you walked yesterday cause it was beautiful outside yesterday - first, way to go!! That's fantastic!! You must've ran a little to get 2 miles in in 32 mins?! Second, I am SOOO jealous that you had a nice day! NY was so nasty yesterday that it was 36 degrees and raining sideways with 55 mph winds!!! I started the day with my hair curly and ended it looking like a drowned rat. LOL. Some parts of New Jersey (within an hour of me) got 14" of snow!!! Crazy, right?

So today I really only consumed about 700-750 caloris and have downed 2L of water so far. One more to go and that will be no issue for me.

I just got back from walking/running outside in the dark (love it), 2.4 miles. I ran the first mile through but had to walk the second plus. I think I drank too much water without expelling it and my belly hurt. All in all, 33 minutes up hills.

Where does one get a pedometer?

Thanks for your suggestions!

Walmart has pedometers, or a sporting goods store, Target, Sears maybe.

I walk at a fast pace, I don't run at all ever LOL.

Today was another outside walk day 2 miles, reluctantly, in 35 mins, shower, dinner (hubby cooked), I got stuck with the dishes! So that was another 1/2 hour of sweating (I am anal about the kitchen after chicken is prepared), then another quick rinse in the shower. Two showers ****s because I had to moisturize all over again! It is still warm enough here that we have the evap cooler on, that adds humidity which means you don't dry off as fast, but it is good for the skin. Unfortunately I have curly hair that is now frizzed!

Oh goodness, you can have the rain. I love snow, but there's nothing good about the rain on a work day! I actually grew up in South Jersey, which is more like Upstate NY - trees, trees, trees. I do miss that too.

I've been getting in 20 minutes of walking in.....last night had to go exchange my iphone and then had to wait for the invisishield to be replaced....so instead of sitting I did some fast walking for 30 minutes. It is an outdoor mall and it was a BEAUTIFUL night so that was GREAT. tonight I walked for almost 2 hours ToTing! I have a 5 and 6 year old I just let them go as long as they wanted....wanted to encourage them to go longer so I could get some good walking in! LOL!

and cad...I'll take the rain! :D

Thanks cad and back to me. Cad I saw a great pedometer at Walmart tonite for $15 it counts calories burned and changes automatically when you go into a run, and it has a 7 day memory! I am going to go back and get one I think.

Tonite the only walking I got in was at Walmart, but since I was upset with hubby I made him go up and down EVERY isle from one end of the store to the other and back. I was hoping to get in a good walk before trick or treaters showed up, but my son went to hang with his friends and hubby didn't get home until it was dark. So tomorrow I will make up for it. OH and I bought a plain old fashioned hula hoop! Gonna get on the trampoline to use it though, so that when I fall on my rear it is somewhere soft.

Today I realized that I may be old! I don't know how to hula hoop anymore! What a laugh that was! The dogs loved it and barked me all the way through the trying. I gave up and walked 5 miles outside instead, I had to have my "other" son bring me more water about half way through. Oh to be sixteen and able to ride a bike 1/2 mile in 3 minutes! So today I also got in about 130 ounces of water, so I will be up peeing all night.

Ok I really want to be in on this one BUT I have a question, I have a really bad back from a car accident a little over 2 years ago and now that I'm not bed bound I want to exercise but I really don't know what I can do, also I had my first heart attack last year at the age of 32 right after finding out my father had passed. My heart is healthy I really want to be a active person again so please if anyone has any ideas please shoot them my way. I have been on phen for 1 week and I have lost 11 pounds already. Also I lost 45 on my own before phen and my goal weight is 175 im now down to 291 from 302...... needless to say im very happy!!!

Wow a heart attack at 32! You really need to ask your Dr. about exercise, he is going to be the best one to advise you. You could probably start out with a slow walk and some hand weights, but check with him first.

I had to see my heart Dr. right before starting phen and she told me my heart couldn't be more healthy..I had no damage done to my heart after my heart attack they are telling me it was stress related not from being unhealthy. she gave me the go ahead for the phen and exercise but didn't say there was nothing I couldn't do EXCEPT run lol there will be no jogging in my future! But all in all I am still ery excited about getting the all clear for this and now im at a stand still I have read probably 1000 websites about exercise and I just don't know which to do so if there are any ideas on what people have tried I guess thats what I'm looking for. Glenna, I bought one at ****'s yesterday. It counts calories and switches to running too, but cost me $20. No big deal on the extra 5. I was excited to use it last night, so when I got home at 10:30pm, I programmed my step size and ran 3 miles with my daughters' dog...except the dog only made it the first 1 1/2! Lol. I brought her back and went back out by myself. I think the pedometer had a psychological effect on me cause I kept looking at my progress so far and wanted to improve it and keep going!! I am so thankful for the pedometer idea so THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

Don't they work wonders? Amazing how being able to see your progress will give you that extra boost. Good for you on the 3 miles! Don't forget to count the extra mile and a half for taking the dog home;).

Walking is my favorite exercise, if you keep your heart rate up it is very good for you. When I started out walking the first time I barely made it the 5 houses to the end of my street! Today I walked 6 miles on my treadmill, 2 of those at a 10 incline, and that was after an hour of squats, crunches, leg lifts, and my arm work out. I had to get extra miles in this weekend since Wednesday I won't be able to work out. My son and his buddy are doing an acoustic show at a local venue. It is their first show for people that actually bought tickets! Of course they had to sell so many tickets in order to play. It is called pay to play, my cousin's fiancé told me today. So that is the reason I walked 5 miles yesterday and 6 today, that will more than make up for the 2 I won't walk on Wednesday.

glenna and cad! you have been amazing this week!!!

what should our new weekly challenge be? I'm thinking either healthy breakfast....or increase the exercise to 4-5 times a week. I'm open for ideas!

Ideas...hmm...how about something like staying away from complex carbs (ie bread, pasta, rice) for the challenge? I know will be hard for some as I myself am a carb junkie, but at least like every other day w/o those carbs in particular?

Or something simpler...no eating after 8?

Or having to drink 1/2 L of water every 2 hours (they are the standard 16 oz bottles)?

Just a few ideas that I would like to do personally. Heck, I'll probably do all 3!

And Backtome, you have been great as well! Almost time for me to run!!

Glenna M
November 5th, 2008, 01:54 AM
I do everything but the carbs and the eating after 8. I walked 2 miles last night and 3 tonite along with my weights, squats and crunches and whatever else I could think of. Tomorrow night I have to go right after work to watch my son and his friend at their show, so I won't get my workout in! I pre-made up for it and will again this weekend. I bought a new sweater dress at Target for six bucks and as soon as it is cool enough out I want to wear it, but I want to look GOOD in it! I think this is the first time I have ever wanted it to be in the 50's lol.

Glenna, I wish I had your stamina...you are amazing!

As for me, I went for a very long run last night (part of it walking) - 5 1/2 miles. I burned over 600 calories and it didn't even feel like a long way. I had my iPod and the silence of night (I loathe running during the day) which relaxed me enough to keep going, if that makes any sense. I felt so good when I got back!! I have to hand it to you again w the pedometer ;)

Scale today - 182.3. Yay!!
