I too have hypothyroidism. I started phen last Sat. and have now lost 10 pounds. I am on 112 mg of levothyroxine. I always said that it was my thyroid problem that causes my weight gain this whole time and I have had it for almost 10 years now. I never understood why I could not eat the same stuff all the other kids were eating. I lost it by lowering my portions and drinking a ton of water which also helps the cravings. I never counted calories or anything until just recently. For instance, I never knew that 2 oreos had 280 calories! Now I just eat only the amount of calories I know I can burn off that day and so fare it has worked. I am pretty active also. I have learned that it is possible to lose weight with hypothyroidism. Its just a little harder for us. I asked the same question you did last week when I started. I think water really made a difference and I 'm someone who hates water! Good Luck and keep trying because I know it's hard.

Hi there, I can totally relate to your concerns. I too began taking synthroid (.137mg) in February, how ironic!

I was diagnosed thyroid cancer in December and had it removed the first week in January. So, I was without any hormones for almost 2 months due to all of the treatment that followed the surgery. I have to say that the treatment that came after the surgery was worse than the surgery. I was so far into hypo mode that I honestly walked around like a zombie. The last body scan I took did not "take" and they ordered one in 10 days. I was not supposed to begin the hormones until AFTER the body scan was completed and read. I was feeling so bad and called the doctor to tell her what happened at the scan. She said she needed me to begin taking the hormones because I was so far into hypo mode and she was concerned that I could slip into a coma....a COMA!!! It was nuts!

So, now that you know my story, you know I can relate to hypothyroidism. Oh, I should mention that the doctor said i would gain weight due to my condition....yup, I did 23 pounds in 5 weeks....it was crazy.

I was counting calories and trying to exercise but nothing was working. i was weighing every item I ate, even tomatoes...who weighs out tomatoes?

So, I am starting to feel normal and have begun running again, it has not been easy but I am doing 1 mile at time. So, I have decided I am not going to obsess about food anymore. I am going to eat healthy and concentrate on exercise. If I do that, the weight ll start to fall off.

I do hope all goes well with you. Please feel free to PM me if you ever need to chat or ask a question. I can so relate to the real fun Hypo thing!

Good luck!

I too have Hypothyroid & so far with watching what i eat & walking I'm losing weight but it's slowly!!!:( I'm on 1.25mg of synthroid have been for the past nine yrs, I have been told that when you are hypo your whole system is sluggish. But my doctor say's as long as you follow a diet & exercise you can lose the weight just not as fast as others without the problem.

For those of you that have been taking Synthroid or Levothoxine and do not see a difference....get your levels checked again ask for different medications go to a different doctor. I have been hypo for 5 years and have been miserable until I got on Phen it has made me not only lose weight but feel better too. Remeber you are the only one who knows how you feel...don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Only you know your body.

Good Luck!

So sorry to hear about your thyroid issues, I take the same dose of Synthroid as you do, but your situation sounds like it was really scary! I've been hypothyroid for at least 8 years (probably before that even, but I did not go to the doctor like I should have, just thought I was depressed, not eating right (reason for gaining so much weight), and stressed. Wish I would have gone sooner as my quality of life in my mid 20's would have probably been better! Good luck!!!

I have been on Thyroid Meds for 2 years. June 06 I weighed 175, working out 2 times a day loosing wieght then suddenly I hit a wall. Stopped going to gym, sleeping all the time, not caring, depressed, loosing hair, What the heck was wrong....... went in to see Dr., Thyroid. mmmm. Put on meds 6 months, taken off 8 months due to Thyroid going into Hyper mode....... After shoulder surgery in Feb. 08, same symptoms occuring and gained 30 lbs in 2 and 1/2 months.

My med level is .10 mgs, we believe my thyroid is stable now. I am currently on a weight loss program and cant wait to see results. Glad to have come across this thread cause I was thinking it would be so easy to loose wieght, like before my thyroid problem. Just have to keep it in mind and not let it bother me.

Good luck all with your adventure, stay healthy.

I had my thyroid removed due to nodules and I take .15mg of Synthroid daily,I feel better when my TSH is around 0.1 which is nearer to hyperthyroid but still in the normal range.Tsh of 5.0 is at the edge of hypothyroid but still normal but I felt really tired, the doctor incresed my Synthroid and I had more energy. It takes 6 weeks on a dose before you get the full effect and can get new boodwork to check it.I find it much harder to lose weight now.I was on weight watchers 16 weeks and lost 12 pounds.I have now been on the Phen 1 month and am down 10 pounds.I need to exercise regularly and closely watch what I eat to lose.Another thing I notice too is that I get really cold at night.I take my Synthrois first thing in the morning and I am usually too warm, later by 7pm I start to get very cold almost like it wears off and I get tired too.The doctor that took out my thyroid said to always take the brand name Synthroid and never a generic that it doesn't work as well.He also said getting my throid out was no big deal and that I woulg just take the pill and feel the same. Not true,it took months to get my level where it should be and I gain weight very easy and have a hard time losing. But what choice do we have,I just keep trying.I also set my goal weight higher than I have in the past.
