View Full Version : What about their Pets?

I know this may sound trivial to some of you, but not only does the loss of life and devastation effect me tremendously, what about the animals and family pets?
I am such an animal lover that my heart breaks to see people do whatever they can to save their pets only to realize they can not take them to the shelters. They must leave them behind in order to head for safety. I watched yesterday's Oprah show and there was a story about a man who refused to leave New Orleans without his dog. Nate - the home interior decorator - took his dog, as well as two others with him and promised the owners they would reunite. I was so moved by Nate's generosity.
I have read that the ASPCA is helping those animals affected by the hurricane.
Does anybody know of anything else going on?

:heartpump: Your not alone thinking about this. I was trying to research about this online days after the hurricane hit though there were not many stories out at that time.
The entire situation is extremely depressing. I would certaintly have a hard time walking away from my pets - and knowning that so many people had no choice other then to walk away breaks my heart.
I hate to think of anyone suffering - and that includes my furry friends. :(

Thanks V- and DesperatlySeekingMe :D
I would not be able to leave behind my dog whatsoever... she is like my child.
It is so very depressing. I do not even want to think about the heartache and pain those people felt who had to leave their pets behind.
I can't even imagine wondering if your loved ones who are missing survived.
ARGH! I am so heartbroken... :(

Don't read this if you don't want to cry.

I have sobbed like a baby twice now from reading this article on cnn.com. I don't know what in the world I would've done in the Katrina situation. My two kitties and my dog mean everything to me.

VaBeachTeacher,
I am right there with you. Animals mean the world to me, especially my own, and I know for an absolute fact I could not leave my pets, no matter what. My heart is ripped to shreds over all of this. I am just so very thankful for the people helping out with rescuing and taking care of these people's pets. God Bless all of these precious people and their precious pets. :heartpump:

I know the St. Louis Humane Society went down there but haven't heard anything other than that.

:heartpump: Too sad. Don't know what we would do if we had to leave our Kobe. Our little one would be inconsolable.
And VaBeachTeach, it is not trivial, on the contrary, it means the world.
Thanks for posting this thread.

Just so everyone knows... the ASPCA has funded supplies and resources to the LA SPCA. I also just read that they have been rescuing animals left behind. Most are in "relatively good condition" according to the rescue crews. On Tuesday of this week they rescued 140 animals and anticipated rescuing another 200 on yesterday.
