I have been taking Phentermine since middle of January 2002. I didn't have my period that month, and haven't started yet! I am concerned about this, but I don't want to tell my doctor, because I am afraid he will take me off the med. I feel like this is my last hope for losing weight, so I want to take it for as long as I can. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what did your doctor say? Thanks for reading.....Misty

OOOOOh girl, you have GOT to talk to your doctor! Is there any chance you may be pregnant? If so, that could be very dangerous to your baby! If not, you will still want to tell your doctor so he can help you determine what is causing this problem. I have not heard of this before, I am new to phen though. But I would still talk to my doctor.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks Sammi and Virginia for your replies! I am definatly NOT pregnant, so that isn't one of my worries. I am also eating enough. I am trying to make a "lifestyle" change, and not go on a "diet", so I have been eating plenty, but trying to make healthy choices. I have definatly decided to tell my doctor, since no one really seems to be having the same problem, I am really worried now. And by the way nice that someone from Johnson City responded to me...Hi old neighbor :) I have lost 15 pounds so far. I just hope that if my doctor does decide to take me off Phen, I can continue to lose. Thanks again you two for your responses and concern...Misty :p

Hi there Gotalot2lose,
I started taking Phentermine in October and I also missed Novembers period. I knew I couldnt be pregnant. I like you, didnt want to go to the Doctors because I didnt want them taking me off the phentermine. I came to this sight and noticed it happened to others so I figured it was phentermine. To play it safe I went off the phentermine and I did get my period about 30 days after being off phentermine. I have since started phentermine again in January and guess what, no period to date. So my guess is phentermine does have that effect on some people. I hope this helps. Casharose

You really think that Phen is causing some of you to miss periods? Wow. I have been using Phen since Monday so I guess when next months period date comes around and it doesn't show up then I won't be too surprised!
Anytime you are in a stressful situation, extreme physical activities, or not eating enough (anorexics and bulemics sometimes stop having periods because they are malnourished) your periods can stop.
When I was in Marine Corps boot camp back in 1994, I remember none of us in our platoon with the exception of 4 women, got their periods for the entire time we were there and bootcamp is 13 weeks long! But we were constantly moving except for the 7 hours of sleep that we got (or less) and our diets changed drastically because 1.) they only gave us 3 minutes to wolf down our food, and 2.) absolutely no junk food!. And of course we were stressed because of the drill instructors yelling at us and working hard to make it to graduation.....
Maybe too much information.....but my point is is that it happens and as long as you know you have not had intercourse and you aren't pregnant (there is Immaculate Conception), I wouldn't sweat it too much.
As a matter of fact, I took up running again and I did notice that my last period was very light which is not normal for me.
So don't worry! ;) :)

Hi! Just a quick update. I didn't take my pill this past weekend at all...and guess what? My period started on Monday! I have been thinkig alot about it, and reading alot about Phen (like I should have before), and I have decided to ween myself off. When I looked it up in the PDR drug book, it says it is only for short term use (2 to 3 weeks) and I have taken it longer than that, so I feel comfortable coming off of it now. Good luck to everyone! :D

I didn't miss my period, but after my first month of taking phentermine, I spotted for like a whole month!!! This was so strange to me, since I am a very regular person, but my doctor told me that it was because I had lost so much weight the first month. After about the second month, everything was "back on track". And I still continued to lose the weight!!!!! :)

So you haven't had a period. Well it could be worse, I haven't STOPPED having mine in over 2 months!!! I guess it must be one extreme or the other!

Your period may have stopped because your body is reacting to its natural evolutionary mechanisms. Here's the deal- back when humans were still evolving from apes thousands of years ago- getting food wasn't as easy as heading to the drive through. During winter and times of drought, man (and more importnantly, women) would go hungry due to a lack of food \ nutrition. When women got pregnant and were starving- one, if not both, of two things usually happenned- they died or their child died. Therefore, as an evolutionary response to insufficient nutrients\calories, the female body ceases to menstruate. It seemed pretty cool to me when I learned about it in Anthropology so I thought I'd share it with you. This is just my guess.

Hi! I am new to this site and also somewhat new to Phentermine. I actually found this site after desperately searching for side effects caused by phentermine (when you type that in to a search engine you generally seem to get places selling phentermine and only listing the most common side effects). At any rate, shortly after I started taking Phen., my period came on it's regular date but was only two days long and very light...more like spotting! I thought I might be pregnant (like many others did not go to doctor b/c didn't want to be told to go off Phen.although i did go off temporarily until i confirmed I was NOT pregnant). Then, my period came early and it was also only two days long and very light! I started freaking out with all the possibilities from cancer to early menopause (I'm 32) although i just had a pap so I knew there was little chance of such extremes...still, i worried. I became a researching fool and in many articles i read about period irregularites, I read that the body cannot regualte it'e periods if it is thrown off balance by either over stimulating or understimulating the hypothalamus. Well, low and behold, the more i read about Phen., I found out that it makes you feel satisfied by overstimulating the hypothalamus!! Go figure!?! Well, I am now weening mysefl off b/c in all that I read about Phen. and with the worry this caused me, it's just not worth it. Also, before i took Phen. I took Bontril and that really worked very well for me. I lost 15 pounds in a matter of weeks with fewer side effects. I was only trying Phen. but definitley had better luck with Bontril, but we are all different. Isn't it amazing the lengths we go to on this neverending quest to be thin?!? Good luck to everyone!

Hi from a fellow Marylander! Where are you?
This post caught my eye because I have experienced weird period stuff in the past month. I spotted for a week then finally started. Thanks for the info on why it happens. I also thought maybe this was pre-menopause stuff (I am 39). Even though you have decided to stop the phen you should still check out this forum for questions, ideas and support. Many of the members do not take phen.
Good luck!

Hi KayBee and fellow Marylander! Actually, my husband and i just moved to maryland from New York 47 days ago (but who's counting?!?) for his job so you are probably the closest I have come to actually knowing anyone here! I know that will change once we get settled. Anyway, I am in Odenton which is maybe 20 miles south of Baltimore. Where are you (not that i would actually know where you were at this point, but I could look on a map)? ;) At any rate, I am glad the info helped you. It was really great for me to read other people's experience with Phen b/c quite honeslty I was freaking out! There are so many side effects that are NOT listed as main side effects when you read about Phen. One of the reasons i was actually taking it is that I was trying to reach my ideal weight as my husband and I want to start a family ASAP and i wanted my body to be at it's best...then suddenly I think i am going in to early menopause!?! I was NOT a happy camper! I have to be honest, I don't have that much weight to lose (had about 20 to lose when i started and now have about 8-10 to lose but most of it was lost w/ Bontril not Phen), it just seemed that with the move and everything, i was struggling more than usual and had put on a few pounds since x-mas. I couldn't seem to stay motivated and since we just moved here, I am not working so I was finding it hard to resist the urge to sit down in front of the TV every morning with a HUGE helping of comfort food. So, I thought the Phen would give me that extra "edge". I ordered it online b/c I don't have enough weight to lose for it to be considered for me, but I do have enough to lose to bother me. Anyway, now i feel silly b/c I have caused myself all these problems and am actually having to ween myself off the stuff when I probably should have just listened to my doctor in the first place and stayed away from it! Aside from the period problems, i have also experienced many of the other side effects from the wicked mood swings to the sudden onset of acne. OH, and I have to pee all the time! Incidentally, I really truly realized how much phen was affecting my bladder when i found myslef in one of Balitmore's infamous traffic jams and realized i had to pee so bad i thought i would burst, yet, I sat there for nearly 1.5 hours...talk about road rage! At the time though i didn't even put it together with the phen. as i had just started taking it. I have even felt mildly puffy or bloated...I think i will have to read more in the forums to see if that is a side effect of Phen or if that's just me? At any rate, i am back on track now...(I hope) and will think things through more in the future. However, i did lose quite a bit of weight in the beginning using Bontril and Xenical. Xenical is gross, but it does work... at least it did for me. :) Anyway, good luck to you and to all of us on our quest to better ourselves!

Wow, There sure are alot of people in Maryland trying to lose weight lol. I live in Harford co. Approx. 20 miles north of Balto. (GO ORIOLES! RAVENS!!) Anyway, I decided to check out this topic this morning because I am 2 weeks late for my period. I am also 39 and was wandering if it was pre men. I am NEVER late as a matter of fact my cycle is usually 24 days to the day. The last time this happened I was pregnate with my beautiful six year old daughter. I took a pregnancy test the first day I was late and it came back positive. I also had some signs back that time like tender painful breasts, and crying for absolutely no known reason,ect... but this time I have no symptoms of pregnancy and I took a test 4 days ago that came back negative. I can't figure it out! not that i miss having it but where is it?????I will wait 2 more days, then test again. If I am with child, I certainly do not want to continue the meds!!! Besides, it would be just my luck after losing 75 pounds...
