I was walking to the fax machine here at work and I started a coughing fit. I coughed so hard I popped something in my lower back/tailbone area. I cant walk. It hurts to sit up straight, I have to hunch over. Has this ever happened to anyone? This happened about an hour ago and it still feels the same. What should I take?

sounds like a worker's comp claim to me (LOL)

Have you taken any pain medicine yet?
Seriously, if it continues to hurt I would see a doc. You could have jarred something in your back.

oooooooooohh mer...im so sorry.you have got to be hurting.....

i do know exactly what your feeling........that sounds to me from what i can read is a "throwing out of the back"......muscle spasm in a way.i have suffereed from lower back issues for about 8 years sometimes it's silent and nothing.but once i have a spasm.omg!!..feel like i want to be shot in the head and just take me out of my unbearable pain....

sweetie.please get some ice on that back..take up to 800 milligrams of ibuprofhen or naproxin sodium..[reduces the inflamation and help with the discomfort and pain]...and relax today and think you should get someone to help you get to your doctor..sleeping can be tough....take a tylonal p.m. to help you sleep tonight if you don't get to a doctor......
i have had a horrible time getting onto this site the last few days.and im glad i got here and read this from you......if you have anything else you want to ask please please please go right ahead....muscle spasms can vary greatly in pain leval.each time different from each other.can you walk around?>....be mobile?.....or are you feeling cripled?................

you would benifit from a muscle relaxer.[flexeril, skelaxin[spelling?] those are two i have taken and they have helped for sure..they help the muscle to stop contracting and spasm....kinda can make you tired and out if it.they can affect you differntly.if you go to the doc.which i know you should,, make sure he give you some......get the help that you need sweetie!!.[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[hugs]]]]]]]]]]]]]

and please mer..go home if you can..........and keep me posted.pm me if ya want too.and darn it...wish i lived near ya.i would be in my car bringing ya a few of those flexerils to help ease the pain.the worst is the beginning.as time passes it will fell alittle better..you range of motion will and maybe feel very limited.but that will increase also.just don't push it!!

please keep me posted ok?

As the saying goes - "been there, done that, got the t-shirt". I fell off a horse when I was in college, and fractured two vertebrae. For the next 20 years I suffered from HORRIBLE muscle spasms. I eventually had to have back surgery due to a herniated disk. I had no feeling in my leg, but horrible pain all down from my hip to my foot. It was awful. The WORST part, however, was the muscle spasm part. People who have not experienced it cannot believe the intensity of the pain, and how debilitating it is. I understand.

As mentioned above - get ice on it immediately! Ibuprofen also - more than the usual dose. 400 mg. is what I usually start with. Do not give in to the urge to lie on the couch for 2 days. You must keep some motion - stretching very carefully, as often as you can. They used to recommend bed rest for a week. HAH! By the end of the week you couldn't move at all! I have found that maintaining as much flexibility as possible is the key. Give the ice and ibuprofen a chance to work, then try to move if you can.

Good luck!

Oh thanks so much! Yeah im pretty sure I pulled something! When Im walking, I only have REAL pain when Im using my right leg. I guess its connected to whatever I pulled. lol.

I just took 2 alieve.. is that enough?

well if ya took aleve you should find some relief and yes i wouldn't take more of those........

still at work girl?....able to move around is a good thing.maybe it wasn't a cripling spasm...

as nal said.keep moving.the old world thinking of bed rest for a few days is the worst thing ya can do.just move it around..but ummmm.tehehehe/.not move it and groove it...lol... ;) ;) ..know what i mean?......i know i know im fresh!!

Awe....I know how bad that hurts! When I was sick last winter the exact thing happened to me....it hurt whenever I moved. It hurt so bad I ended up going to quick care....they did x-rays to make sure I didnt break a rib and they just said I bruised it by coughing so hard...I had a cold that made me cough ALL of the time. He gave me medicine and some hydrocodene for the pain....but it went away in a couple of days. I hope you feel better....just take it easy. I know how bad that hurts!

I did that sneezing once! I suffered with it for a few days - finally had to sit my butt down in a recliner for 2 days straight and it finally got better. But I figured out WHY it happened. My son was about 2 years old - I had always lifted him into his carseat in the center of my explorer. That and other baby lifting things had left me with a constantly sore back. I think it was primed to be thrown out by a sneeze! So I started making him climb in his own seat, was more careful about how and where I lifted him, and my back that had always been somewhat sore for 2 years (since he was born) got better!
